00:00You may think the Merc with the Mouth doesn't have a filter, but it turns out there were
00:04some lines in the sand when it came to what jokes they could get away with for Deadpool
00:07and Wolverine.
00:08And no, it had nothing to do with Bolivian marching powder.
00:11Hey, cocaine is the one thing that Feige said is off-limits.
00:16In fact, Ryan Reynolds was legitimately worried about Disney being behind the third Deadpool
00:20film.
00:21The previous two movies were productions of 20th Century Fox, but in between the productions
00:26of Deadpool 2 and Deadpool and Wolverine, Fox was acquired by the House of Mouse, and
00:30there were concerns that the Deadpool franchise would suffer as a result.
00:33Fortunately, that didn't end up being the case, and Deadpool and Wolverine dropped into
00:37theaters with all the violence, gore, swearing, and crude jokes fans expected.
00:42In July 2024, Reynolds told E! Talk that Disney was actually incredibly accommodating to the
00:47humor in the film, before hinting that they only crossed the line once.
00:50Really, there was one joke, one line, that they asked me to take out.
00:55Wow, I can't imagine.
00:56Hugh, Hugh, you want to tell them?
00:59Reynolds never revealed what the joke was, but now the company has posted the official
01:02script to their awards season For Your Consideration portal, and it does indeed contain one joke
01:07that never made it to the final cut.
01:09And frankly, it's not hard to see why it got changed.
01:12The scene takes place about halfway through the film when Deadpool first runs into Blade,
01:16Elektra, and Gambit, and Elektra tells him that there's a fourth person who's going to
01:20show up.
01:21Dear sweet God in heaven, let it be Magneto, because with him…
01:24He's dead.
01:25F**k!
01:26Now Disney gets cheap?
01:27In the original script, Deadpool runs off the line about Disney being cheap and adds,
01:31"...I can barely breathe with all this Mickey Mouse s**t in my throat."
01:34Apparently, even in a movie chock full of similarly graphic sexual jokes and shots at
01:38Disney as a company, combining them while invoking the name of Mickey Mouse went too
01:43far.
01:44Sean Levy, who co-wrote and directed Deadpool and Wolverine, talked to Entertainment Weekly
01:47about the joke in August 2024.
01:50He also confirmed that it was the only line they were explicitly asked to change, but
01:54he also didn't think Reynolds' replacement line was going to get Disney's blessing, either.
01:58In case you forgot, it was,
01:59"...It's like Pinocchio jammed his face in my ass and started lying like crazy."
02:04Levy joked to Entertainment Weekly,
02:05"...I was like, Ryan, that's your replacement line in response to, can we clean it up?
02:10That's Ryan Reynolds for you, audacious to the very edge."
02:13Deadpool and Wolverine went on to become a box office juggernaut and didn't particularly
02:17suffer from that one change.
02:19And after all, it's not like that's the only thing that changed over the course of putting
02:23the film together.
02:24At one point in the pitch process, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine was slated to do a song and dance
02:28number, and they even tried to get Robert Downey Jr. to cameo as Tony Stark before falling
02:33back on Happy Hogan when that didn't work out.
02:36In the end, fans got what they wanted from Deadpool and Wolverine, and Disney got what
02:39they wanted, too — at least if the $1.3 billion global box office haul has anything
02:44to go on.
02:45And they did it without conjuring images of Mickey's manhood.
02:48Now that's a happy ending for everyone.
02:50"...What a hot dog day!"
