00:00President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is targeting some government agencies
00:05to fight malnutrition in the country.
00:08This is after a study found that malnourished children are three times more likely to get malnourished.
00:13This is the story of Clayzel Pardilla.
00:17It's hard to spend 5 Pesos per month on Hanilin after she stopped working.
00:25She can't afford to buy vitamins, she can't even afford to get her mother's vaccine.
00:31The vitamins that I take are free from my previous job.
00:37My husband earns money for his daily needs.
00:43Jura May is trying to provide enough food and vitamins for her 6-month pregnant husband.
00:51He doesn't want his wife to get malnourished just like their eldest son who got sick.
00:58I got sick because I didn't have enough vitamins.
01:01That's why now...
01:02That's why I'm trying to sell my children.
01:06You really need to prioritize.
01:07Why are you trying so hard to get enough vitamins and milk?
01:13It's just for the baby.
01:15President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and government agencies
01:19are working together to fight malnutrition.
01:26He ordered to provide enough nutrition for the first 1,000 days of the child
01:31from the time she was born until the 24th month of the child.
01:36The emphasis should be on the first 1,000 days which involves a pregnant mother.
01:42The fetus is inside the uterus.
01:46They'll be given micronutrients, mainly iron, folic acid,
01:52and then the tetanus and diphtheria vaccine.
01:56And then when she gives birth,
01:58she should be given a mandatory initiation of breastfeeding.
02:03According to the health department, this is important.
02:06It was found out in a study that 3 out of every 10 children
02:10aged 5 years and below are malnourished
02:13who were born with malnutrition in the first 1,000 days.
02:17The problem is not the baby.
02:18The problem is the low cognitive ability.
02:21The brain is weak because the brain development happens in the first 1,000 days.
02:26President Marcos ordered the National Nutrition Council
02:30to prioritize programs that will ensure the health and well-being of the children,
02:36including free but nutritious food, vitamins, vaccines, and regular check-ups.
02:42Starting in 2026, the budget will make a convergence
02:46in focusing on the proper nutrition of the children.
02:49This means that the funds of various government agencies will be pooled
02:54for one purpose.
02:56Currently, the budget of the health department is around Php 0.5 billion
03:00for the first 1,000 days of the children.
03:03This is expected to be increased when joint action is taken
03:07on malnutrition.
03:09Some places that have a high malnutrition rate are in Pancina,
03:14such as Pangasinan, Isabela, Northern Summer,
03:18Bangsamoro, and other provinces.
03:20Currently, the Department of Social Welfare and Development
03:26is distributing food stamps to the poorest Filipinos.
03:29Each family will receive Php 3,000 worth of food stamps
03:34that they can buy to eat.
03:36Malnutrition is far from the poverty of the poor Filipinos.
03:41Our target this year is to onboard and serve 300,000 household beneficiaries.
03:48We are close to achieving this.
03:50Partner, we have already onboarded 260,000 as of today.
