00:00Taking from homes, detained for months and subjected to intense propaganda before coerced
00:07adoption, a new report by Yale School of Public Health has shed light on Russia's forceful
00:12deportation of Ukrainian children.
00:15The researchers identified 314 Ukrainian children adopted by Russian families and placed into
00:20institutions initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin, and he subordinates the operation
00:26is intended to russify children from Ukraine.
00:29Yesterday, our team released the way it works is there's three interconnected databases,
00:35one of which is directly run by the Ministry of Education.
00:38After the September annexation of area occupied by Russia, they moved the children from mid
00:46points, basically safe houses where they had held them for six months, and then placed
00:51them in the database.
00:53While in those midpoints, Ukrainian children had to undergo forced re-education, Raymond
00:58explained, adding that it amounts to indoctrination.
01:02That includes for older boys, military training, including vehicle operation, weapons operation,
01:09parachute jumping.
01:12And then for younger children, it includes indoctrination in Russian narratives, singing
01:17Russian songs and being prohibited from speaking Ukrainian.
01:22In March of last year, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for
01:25Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova Belova for their actions and involvement in the unlawful
01:30deportation of Ukrainian children.
01:32Your report says the Kremlin launched this program in the first weeks of 2022 in tandem
01:37with its preparation for its all out invasion of Ukraine.
01:41Evidence that we provide in this report, we provided through direct transfer to the International
01:46Criminal Court, is clear evidence of alleged crimes against humanity.
01:53And now it is up to the ICC and other jurisdictions to decide whether they want to charge.
01:59We've given them all the information we have and we believe the case is clear.
02:04The situation might get even worse as around one and a half million Ukrainian children
02:09who still live in occupied areas of Ukraine remain at high risk of being forcefully deported
02:15to Russia.
02:22Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced sanctions against the pro-Russian part of
02:27the Georgian government.
02:30As protests gripped Georgia, Zelensky stressed the importance of standing united against
02:35Moscow and not losing countries in the region, naming Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine as examples.
02:45It is important that our partners also speak about their position and honestly state what
02:52is happening and what needs to be done.
03:02Georgia is gripped by mass protests triggered by the governing party's decision to suspend
03:06negotiations on joining the EU.
03:10During the past six nights, Georgian riot police used water cannons and tear gas to
03:14disperse demonstrators, who built barricades and threw fireworks at police.
03:22Kosovo's Prime Minister Albin Kurti claims their security forces have doubled in size
03:26with plans to transition into a national army by 2028.
03:31Tensions with Serbia have risen following explosions Kosovo blames on Serbia, despite
03:36a lack of evidence.
03:38Kosovo, which declared independence in 2008, remains unrecognised by Serbia.
03:43The defence minister has announced that they are working to open a state-owned ammunition
03:47factory.
03:48The armament and ammunition that you see in our army today is imported from NATO countries.
03:57The United States, Turkey, Germany, the United Kingdom and Croatia must be fixed here.
04:07Some experts have expressed concern over military developments, fearing it could worsen tensions
04:12in the region.
04:13When it comes to such rapid armament and militarisation of an entire region, it can only lead to one
04:23direction.
04:24Kosovo's security forces are advancing their capabilities by acquiring armoured vehicles,
04:29drones and anti-tank missiles.
04:32The government claims their military development is for defence purposes and will only act
04:37in coordination with their allies.
04:42The European Commission was unaware of the investigation into the alleged money laundering
04:50by former European Commissioner Didier Reinders.
04:53The Belgian politician was Commissioner for Justice until last Saturday.
04:57So first of all, did you have any indications that Mr Reinders was engaging in any malpractice
05:02during his mandate?
05:04We do not have any further information about this matter.
05:07Of course, if the Belgian authorities were to contact us, we are going to collaborate
05:12with them.
05:13Mr Reinders still enjoys a certain immunity linked to his former position.
05:18If it were to be withdrawn, the decision would be up to the current College of Commissioners.
05:24So indeed members of the College are accorded immunity, but solely, only in the interest
05:32of the Union.
05:34What does that mean?
05:35It means that they benefit from immunity for acts performed by them in their official
05:40capacity.
05:41So it's a functional immunity.
05:45According to French daily Le Soir and investigative platform Follow the Money, Reinders' homes
05:50were searched by police on Tuesday, apparently following suspicions that he may be laundering
05:54money through the Belgian national lottery.
06:01South Korea's president, Yeon Suk-kyo, replaced his defense minister, Kim Jong-un, as opposition
06:05parties moved to impeach both men over the short-lived martial law that the parliament
06:10annulled.
06:11Minister Kim offered to resign and apologize for causing disruption and concern to the
06:15public, saying troops acted on his instructions and that all responsibility lies with him.
06:21The joint motion to impeach the president was forwarded to the National Assembly to
06:24be voted on Saturday evening.
06:27Meanwhile, in protest of the president, large crowds gathered outside the parliament for
06:31a candlelit vigil.
06:34Yoon, on the other hand, who risks being prosecuted for high treason, hasn't appeared in public
06:41since his televised announcement that martial law was lifted.
06:45Opposition lawmakers already voted on Thursday to impeach the chairman of South Korea's auditing
06:49board and three top public prosecutors.
06:52The prosecutors were accused of watering down an investigation involving Yoon's wife, who
06:56was linked to suspected stock price manipulation.
06:59Impeaching the president would require support from two-thirds of the National Assembly,
07:03which is 200 of its 300 members.
07:05The opposition parties together have 192 seats, with support from 18 lawmakers that belong
07:11to an anti-Yoon faction in his party.
07:13But this faction said they would work against the impeachment.
07:16If Yoon is impeached, he will be suspended until the constitutional court rules on whether
07:21to remove him from office.
07:23High treason is punishable by death under South Korean law.
07:26The country retains the death penalty, but it has not carried out any executions since
07:311997.
07:39Starting this Christmas Eve, the Eternal City will welcome an estimated 35 million pilgrims
07:44for the 2025 Jubilee, and Rome is gearing up for the occasion with much of the city
07:50transforming into an open-air construction site for the past few months.
07:55Monuments are being restored, roads repaired, and pedestrian areas redesigned to prepare
08:01for the stream of visitors.
08:04Despite opposition claims that the city is falling behind on numerous projects, Rome's
08:09mayor says the city will be ready in time.
08:21This will be the second Jubilee led by Pope Francis, following the one in 2015.
08:28The central message of the Holy Year is to foster hope and trust.
08:32The pontiff has called on clergy and religious orders to lead by example, and to help tackle
08:37the housing crisis.
08:50The Jubilee will officially begin with the opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter's Basilica.
09:08Over the following days, the doors of Rome's major basilica will also open, and will remain
09:13so until the end of the celebrations.
09:21Pope Francis received a new Popemobile from Mercedes.
09:27It is the first of its kind as it's fully electric and will therefore have zero emissions.
09:33The vehicle comes in its traditional white color.
09:36It has an elevated and rotating heated chair for the Pope, as well as rear platforms for
09:41Swiss guards.
09:42It's a great honor for us today to hand over the Popemobile to the Holy Father.
09:48At Mercedes-Benz we have almost a hundred years' tradition.
09:52The first car was handed over in 1930 to Pope Pius XI, but today for Pope Francis we have
10:00something very special.
10:01It is the very first Popemobile that is fully electric, based upon the electric, all-electric
10:07G-Class that we launched this year.
10:11It is unclear when the vehicle will come into service, but Pope Francis is expected to use
10:16it to drive through St. Peter's Square during the 2025 Jubilee.
