00:00Former EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier has been appointed the new French Prime Minister.
00:12French politicians urge the UK government to take action against migrant deaths.
00:25Former right-wing minister and EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier has been appointed the new
00:31French Prime Minister, the LSE Palace announced on Thursday.
00:37French President Emmanuel Macron asked the political veteran to form a unifying government
00:43two months after the snap parliamentary election.
00:48But the plum job is not set in stone, as 73-year-old Barnier from the minor Republican party will
00:55now need to survive a no-confidence vote in France's lower house.
01:01Leaders from the far-left coalition have blasted the former European Commissioner's potential
01:06appointment, predicting Barnier would not garner majority backing.
01:10The nomination comes weeks after increasing pressure from political groups to nominate
01:35a candidate and 50 days of caretaker government.
01:41Barnier replaces Gabrielle Attal, who resigned mid-July following quickfire legislative elections
01:46that produced a divided and hung parliament, which plunged France into political turmoil.
01:57After months of intense demonstrations by farmers this past winter and spring, changes
02:01could be on the horizon for Europe's agricultural sector.
02:05The European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, has just published its strategic
02:09dialogue with key stakeholders on the future of farming, with ideas like shifting how EU
02:14funds are allocated to farmers by need rather than by size.
02:19The discussion, spearheaded earlier this year, is seen as essential in bridging the highly
02:23polarised debate surrounding the Common Agricultural Policy, or CAP.
02:27The CAP, which accounts for one third of the EU's budget, is now under review.
02:33The recommendation is to make the CAP fit for purpose, and this means on the one side
02:41enabling for lively rural areas, this means in the second function income support, but
02:52as the CAP is public money, this income support should be targeted, much more targeted, to
03:00those who actually need this support.
03:05These suggestions are expected to form the basis for the European Commission's new agriculture
03:10and food proposal, which is set to be released by early 2025.
03:15Environmental groups like Greenpeace have cautiously welcomed the discussions, calling
03:19it a step towards sustainability.
03:22Clearly if I had to write this, I would write it very differently, but I accept it again
03:28as a consensus after seven months of very hard work and very tough negotiations.
03:33So I'm extremely happy to see, for instance, all this group of stakeholders accepting the
03:38fact that we need to address the negative impacts of livestock farming, not at the expenses
03:44of farmers.
03:45We need to help farmers in the transition, but it's clear that we all agree we need to
03:50tackle the problem of livestock in the areas with very high livestock concentration.
03:57One key issue raised during last spring's protests was funding the transition to a more
04:02sustainable agricultural system.
04:05Farmers through their main association, Copper Kodjeka, were involved in the talks.
04:10Farmers cannot support on their own the totality of changes.
04:16Some changes have a cost or make it difficult to operate because changes are not important.
04:22So we need support, because it corresponds to a demand from society.
04:26It is society, through public support, that must accompany this transition fund.
04:31The text also calls on the European Commission to ensure greater coherence between its trade
04:36and sustainability policies.
04:40A person was killed in Munich on Thursday after an exchange of shots with police.
04:47They had noticed the suspect carrying a gun in an area near the Israeli consulate and
04:51a museum dedicated to the city's Nazi-era history.
04:54The protection of Jewish and Israeli institutions has the highest priority.
04:59It is very sad that this is taking place in front of the NS Documentation Center and the
05:04Consulate General of Israel.
05:08This is, in my opinion, a static situation.
05:13Other than the suspect, no one else was hurt, according to police.
05:19They have increased their presence in the city but did not indicate incidents at any
05:24other locations or other suspects.
05:29Israel's foreign ministry said the consulate was closed when the shooting occurred and
05:33that no staff have been affected by the incident.
05:44The last time Giorgio Meloni's party, Fratelli d'Italia, held an executive meeting at a national
05:49level, attended by the highest ranking figures, was in 2022, the year her government took
05:57office.
05:58So the timing of this gathering is quite significant.
06:02According to Fratelli d'Italia's officials, the aim of the meeting was, quote, to assess
06:08the work that has been done so far and outline the agenda for the coming months.
06:12Several issues were discussed during the meeting that was introduced by Italy's Prime Minister
06:18Giorgio Meloni, who's also the party's president.
06:22Among them was the 2025 budget law, which is considered a key measure of the government's
06:29political program.
06:32The procedure for its approval will begin soon, with the first step being the submission
06:36of the structural budget plan, providing the framework for the 2025 budget.
06:42It's too early to get a full and detailed picture of the measure.
06:45What we do know, as confirmed by Giorgio Meloni, is that the focus will be on tax cuts while
06:49sustaining businesses and improve the livelihoods of both Italian families and workers.
06:55We asked a member of Fratelli d'Italia what was discussed during the meeting and what
06:59the priorities are moving forward.
07:01Giorgio Meloni has underlined the great achievements achieved with the lowest inflation among the
07:05C7 countries, the historical record of employment, a growth higher than the European average
07:11and a greater international prestige of Italy.
07:13We will continue on this path, a precise commitment that we reiterated in the executive of Fratelli
07:18d'Italia, with policies that support businesses, families and workers.
07:23But during the meeting, Giorgio Meloni also addressed the controversy making headlines
07:27in Italy surrounding the country's culture minister, San Giuliano, over claims made by
07:32Maria Rosaria Boccia regarding her alleged appointment as the minister's advisor.
07:38Although San Giuliano denied the claims and the use of public funds to pay Boccia, Meloni
07:43warned that mistakes are not permitted.
07:46According to a recent poll, the majority of Italians approves Meloni's leadership.
07:50How her cabinet handles the state's finances will be a key factor in ensuring she will
07:55complete the government's five-year term.

08:03Students, teachers and parents are mourning the loss of two 14-year-old students and two
08:11teachers who died in a school shooting in the U.S. state of Georgia on Thursday.
08:17The shooter, a 14-year-old fellow student, used an AR platform-style weapon, according
08:22to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey.
08:26Obviously, the shooter was armed, and our school resource officer engaged him, and the
08:32shooter quickly realized that if he did not give up, that it would end with an OIS, an
08:41officer-involved shooting. He gave up, got on the ground, and the deputy took him into
08:45custody.
08:47The shooter had reportedly already been questioned by police over a year ago, after the FBI received
08:53anonymous tips about online threats to commit a school shooting.
08:58The state's Division of Family and Children's Services also had previous contact with the
09:03teen, and will investigate whether that has any connection with the shooting.
09:11This is Gianni the Buzzard. She goes out in the evening to guard the Archaeological Park
09:16of Pompeii.
09:19Her job requires her to be attentive and efficient, as she is called to control the park and defend
09:24the excavations from pigeons.
09:27During the COVID lockdown in 2020, the closure of the park led to a higher number of the
09:32birds nesting.
09:35They drove away other species and endangered the ruined ruins with their particularly corrosive
09:40droppings.
09:41The fragility of the heritage site means it's important all elements that compose it are
09:46kept in balance.
10:11Gianna and Aria are part of a team of 10 birds of prey who have been patrolling the site
10:28at least three times a week for the past two years.
10:32Their efforts ward off invasive and harmful species such as pigeons, magpies, and crows.
10:41Guided by the signals of her instructor, Gianna uses her hunting skills to search the rooms
10:56of the Pompeian houses. But her mission is simply to chase species away.
11:12Falconry was also practiced by the ancient inhabitants of Pompeii. Today, it is an ecological
11:26method that respects both the environment and its animals, even those that Gianna helps
11:31keep away from the precious archaeological site.
