Russian President Vladimir Putin announced plans to deploy the Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile system in Belarus by mid-2025.

The decision follows a request by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko during a summit in Minsk. Putin confirmed Belarus would have control over targeting for the missiles stationed on its territory.

The Oreshnik system was recently used in combat, with Russia firing it at a Ukrainian city last month in what Putin called its first operational test.

00:00I would like to publicly ask you to place the new weapons systems and, first of all, the nutcracker, on the territory of Belarus.
00:11Since we have signed a security guarantee agreement today, with the use of all available forces and means,
00:18I believe that the placement of such complexes as the nutcracker on the territory of the Republic of Belarus is possible.
00:27As for the possibility of such a placement, frankly speaking, it will become possible, I think, in the second half of next year,
00:40as the number of such complexes is increased, as the number of such complexes is mass-produced in Russia
00:49and as these missile systems are added to the armament of the Russian troops of strategic importance.
00:57The more the power of the combat unit.
