00:00PTV Sports is back on Sports Banter with us today are Sir Paulo De Los Santos and Jerry Legaspi from Valiant MMA. Good afternoon, gentlemen.
00:16Sir, for Sir Paulo, can you tell us the history of Valiant MMA? When did it start?
00:31Actually, Valiant MMA started in 2018. It was a thesis by Sean, the owner of the gym. It was for fitness and exercise.
00:46Eventually, after the pandemic, it focused more on fight sports. It became a training center for the national team of Sambo.
00:57That's a good thing. It started with a thesis. How did it happen that it was chosen as your partner's thesis subject?
01:08Out of all the businesses he could establish, he chose the MMA gym.
01:14As far as I know, up until now, he couldn't open a normal business like a restaurant or a common business.
01:24Since he was training Muay Thai, he decided to open his own gym.
01:31What are the challenges of opening your own gym from scratch? We know that there are a lot of competitors in the Philippines and in Metro Manila.
01:42There are a lot of people like you who offer services when it comes to teaching martial arts. What are the challenges?
01:52The challenge is probably the marketing. Like you said, there are a lot of competitors in the gyms.
02:00Of course, the quality of the coaches. We have Coach Jerry, Kuya Mark, Striegel, Troy.
02:09The support of the marketing team, the Sambo National Team, is a big help.
02:16Sir Gian, how is the quality of the coaches? How do you find the quality coaching staff? How is the process?
02:28Usually, our requirements are their credentials. Like Coach Jerry, he's a Jiu-Jitsu black belt.
02:37He's at the highest level of Jiu-Jitsu for teaching Jiu-Jitsu.
02:41One of their credentials, of course, is to be with the clients and the way they teach.
02:49The most important thing is the relationship of the coaches with our clients.
02:56Coach Jerry, you're the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach of this gym. Do you also teach other disciplines?
03:04I teach Combat Sambo, Tuesdays and Thursdays. We're part of the Combat Sambo National Team.
03:12And then we do MMA.
03:15So you're all around in the gym.
03:17Yes, sir.
03:18If you were to describe your style of coaching, what would you say?
03:22I have an aggressive approach to coaching, especially if you're a fighter.
03:29But if you're a beginner or a hobbyist, I would be nice to you.
03:38That's right, sir.
03:39Our fans might get intimidated because of your gym.
03:44We know that you have high level fighters.
03:47But is it open to beginners who just want to start?
03:52Yes, it's open.
03:53In our gym, even if you're not a fighter, you can still train with famous fighters like Mark, Marwin, Kirante, UFC fighter, Suess Champion, McCleary.
04:09You can train with them even if you're not a pro fighter.
04:14Sir, can you just chime in on that?
04:16What's the advantage if you're a beginner and you can train with fighters of that caliber?
04:22For me, the advantage is that you won't get lost in training.
04:27Since they're experienced and they're no longer in the experimental stage.
04:32Our coaches have experience in MMA and others are actively fighting in MMA until now.
04:42Actually, speaking of intimidation partner.
04:44I get intimidated when I see the coach's ear.
04:48Cauliflower?
04:49Yes, the cauliflower ear.
04:51I don't want to touch it.
04:54But coach, how about aspiring national athletes or MMA fighters?
05:01How can someone prepare to learn MMA or Jiu Jitsu?
05:09Okay, what you really need is to go to the nearest gym or gym that you're comfortable with.
05:16You don't need to be fit.
05:18That's what we'll do.
05:19We'll teach you step by step.
05:21We'll guide you.
05:22So don't be intimidated.
05:24Hey, I'm not fit.
05:27I don't have air.
05:28I don't have everything.
05:29So go to the gym first.
05:30Step by step, we'll guide you.
05:32Don't be intimidated.
05:34Go to their gym.
05:36Okay, sir.
05:37Maybe one of these days, I'll teach you.
05:40Yes, that's good.
05:41Sir, for those who are interested in becoming a member of our gym,
05:47what are the full services that we talked about earlier?
05:50But please elaborate on all the services that we offer in the gym.
05:55Okay, we specialize in combat sambo.
05:58We have sports sambo.
06:01We do lots of no-gi grappling.
06:04We have wrestling.
06:06Our head wrestling coach is Mark Srigo.
06:10He's an All Japan champion before.
06:14So he knows what he's doing.
06:16And he was a UFC fighter.
06:20One FC.
06:21So you know.
06:22We have Muay Thai.
06:26The people teaching Muay Thai, they all fought.
06:29So they know what they're teaching.
06:31And we have boxers also.
06:33They're teaching at the gym.
06:35And we also have fitness trainers.
06:38If you want to just do weights, they're there to guide.
06:41Yes, sir.
06:42But, sir, coach, you've mentioned earlier that we have nationals.
06:47Do we have national athletes who train in the Valiant MMA?
06:51Yes, sir, regularly.
06:52Can you share with us, sir,
06:54how big of a help is our Valiant MMA gym for them?
06:58One day, they can represent our country on the international stage.
07:05Something like that, sir.
07:06It's a big help for us.
07:08The national team of Sambo is there.
07:13It's just that the training equipment that we need is there.
07:19The weights.
07:20It's close to us.
07:22But we have other gyms that we train for Sambo.
07:26There's a national team in the back of Lasal, in PSC.
07:31And then we have our own Sambo gym in Singalong.
07:35That's where our president, Paolo, is based.
07:38So, sometimes we go to our nearest places.
07:42We don't have a hard time.
07:44So, thank you, Paolo, for agreeing that if we're close to QC,
07:49we're in QC.
07:50If we're close to Manila or Makati area, they're in Manila area.
07:54In addition to that, sir, can you share with us what are the tips for MMA artists,
08:01aspiring MMA artists,
08:03especially kids who want to try this sport?
08:07Can you give us some tips on how they can start?
08:13Okay. You need to learn a style first.
08:17For example, boxing or Muay Thai.
08:21And then add some grappling styles to it if you want to do MMA.
08:24Because you can't concentrate on one style.
08:27You need to be the first style.
08:28So, you need a little bit of everything.
08:30So, I would suggest that if you're planning to do MMA,
08:34do some boxing, do some MMA, do some Sambo, do some Nogi.
08:39And then, if you're really good at something,
08:44that's what you focus on.
08:45If you're not good at something, you still need to focus.
08:48So, a little bit of everything.
08:50There are gym coaches who will teach you MMA right away.
08:55So, do you believe in that?
08:57You're alluding to earlier.
08:59Is that a disadvantage to teach?
09:01Because there are a lot of facets to learn
09:03instead of saying,
09:05master one style and then add other facets.
09:09You will have loopholes in your hole if you're just doing MMA.
09:13You can make it if you're athletic.
09:16But you can have loopholes.
09:19Meaning that if you fight a wrestler
09:21and you've just been doing a little bit of wrestling,
09:24you'll dominate.
09:25That's why you need a little bit of everything
09:27and specialize in a lot of things
09:29instead of just doing MMA.
09:31Because you don't have enough time.
09:33Okay.
09:34Sir Paulo, I believe you have upcoming events
09:37that you want to share with us.
09:39And if you have a message for our viewers.
09:45What do you mean by events?
09:47Upcoming events.
09:48Okay.
09:49Our upcoming events.
09:52Okay.
09:53Our upcoming events are a bit busy.
09:56This December,
09:58we have a one-week training program in Davao.
10:02That's a grassroots program.
10:05We have the Philippine Sambo team there
10:08teaching grassroots levels there.
10:12And aspiring Sambo fighters.
10:17And then we have...
10:20In Sri Lanka, we have a beach sports Sambo.
10:26There will be Sidney Tangonchan be fighting there.
10:29McCleary.
10:30And there'll be another person from Davao.
10:32They'll be doing beach Sambo.
10:34We got brave fighting.
10:38We have two fighters fighting there.
10:40Marianne and Jen.
10:42I'll be going there with her in Bahrain.
10:46That's on the 13th of December.
10:50After that, we're going to Bali.
10:52We have two fighters fighting at CFN MMA Fight Night.
10:57And then...
10:58January 2025.
11:01So many fights and Sambo competitions.
11:05We have the BBM Cup.
11:08Hosted, of course, by a president.
11:10And then...
11:13We will have a Sambo event in Tagaytay.
11:20There's a combat arena.
11:25It will be under Sir Tolentino.
11:28And then...
11:29We have...
11:32Dumao, Japan.
11:34Which is where we will be going to.
11:36We're going to do some grappling over there.
11:38And so many more, sorry.
11:40I can't mention everything.
11:41Looks like you won't be staying here in the Philippines, Coach.
11:45Your next schedules are all abroad.
11:47But thank you, Sir Paulo and Sir Jerry.
11:50And on our way back, we have...
11:53MMA Mixed Martial Artist, Mark Mugen Striegel and Troy Anthony Legaspi.
12:02BTV Sports is back.
12:03In our next part, we have...
12:07MMA Artist, Mark Mugen Striegel and Troy Anthony Legaspi.
12:12Welcome, gentlemen.
12:13Thank you, guys. Thanks for having us.
12:15Welcome, sir.
12:16Mark, can you tell us about what's happening with you lately?
12:19Because obviously, you've been fighting in the pros.
12:22And you've also been competing under the national team of our different combat sports associations.
12:29So, how about now? What's happening with you right now?
12:32My last competition was in Paris.
12:35In Paris, France.
12:36I did a sports Sambo competition with the Philippine team.
12:41I got bronze at that tournament.
12:43My specialty is really combat Sambo.
12:45But I do sports Sambo as well.
12:47So, it was a great experience to go to Paris.
12:50And my teammates, Chino and AC, they both got gold.
12:53So, that was the last competition I did.
12:56But next year, I'm looking forward to more combat sport competitions.
13:01For combat Sambo and also pro MMA.
13:05How about...
13:06Oh, no. He's Tagalog.
13:08Anthony, you're also a fighter.
13:12So, what are you doing right now?
13:14My last competition was in Indonesia in June.
13:18I got gold.
13:19Then, next week, our UAAP is for Judo.
13:22So, I'm representing the U.S. team.
13:24Nice one.
13:26Partner, I think I'll just stay here and ask questions.
13:29Marco, it's up to you.
13:30I can't do it.
13:31But Anthony, for you, you've said your notable achievements before.
13:38But here, what are we focusing on for your future career?
13:44For my future career, I'll probably focus more on Sambo National Team after I join the U.S.T.
13:54Because I'll just finish my college as a U.S.T. Judo Men's Team.
13:58Then, after that, I'll go back to the National Team in Sambo.
14:00Speaking of being a student-athlete, how hard is it to be a student-athlete?
14:05Especially here in Sambo, you really need intensive training, right?
14:13For me, it's hard.
14:15But if you want, there's a way.
14:16And it's just time management.
14:18As long as you know how to manage your time, you can do whatever you want.
14:21Alright.
14:22Let's go back to you.
14:24You're one of the few Filipino-born fighters who had the fortune of making it into the UFC.
14:34How does one make it there?
14:36And what do you think is lacking in our local scene?
14:40This is why there's not a lot of fighters that make it into the big leagues.
14:46Yeah.
14:47I mean, to make it to the UFC and to make it into big promotions like the UFC or one championship,
14:51really, you have to just win.
14:53It's as easy as that.
14:54You have to put together a good win record and beat some big names.
14:59And then, essentially, they just call you and you get that opportunity.
15:02I think that as Filipinos, we have a bright future in combat sports.
15:07Jiu-jitsu is getting really big in the country.
15:10And there are a lot of gyms producing great champions.
15:13So I think it's just a matter of time before we have another Filipino fighter in the UFC.
15:18In your opinion, what's the biggest area that Filipino fighters need to work on
15:24in order to achieve more success as a pro MMA fighter?
15:29I mean, I would have said a few years ago, I would have said jiu-jitsu and wrestling
15:34because, of course, we have champions like Manny Pacquiao, Nonito Donaire.
15:39So boxing has always been very strong in this country.
15:43But these days, with jiu-jitsu and wrestling, the level just keeps getting higher and higher.
15:48So, yeah, I don't think there's really one area in particular.
15:52I think that it's just up to the athlete to do the right training
15:56and find the right gyms to train at and put everything together for him or herself.
16:00Speaking of, you spoke about competing pro and under the national team as well.
16:06Can we expect Mark Striegel return to the Southeast Asian Games?
16:11Or is it something you're thinking about?
16:13No, no, I definitely want to.
16:14I won gold in the SEA Games in Pampanga in 2019 for Combat Sambo.
16:19And, yeah, I definitely want to.
16:22Just waiting for the opportunity again.
16:24And I love representing the country for sambo.
16:29Alright, I also want to ask about your social medias.
16:33Because we saw that their contents are funny.
16:37So can you tell us more about your social media accounts?
16:41So Troy and I, we started this thing called Bullshido during the pandemic, actually.
16:47Because we were kind of bored during training.
16:50We were kind of bored and we saw this video of some Indians doing martial arts.
16:55And we were looking at it after training and I was just scratching my head.
16:58And I'm like, this is never going to work, bro.
17:00What is this garbage?
17:02Someone's going to get hurt if they try this on the streets.
17:05It's actually bad. It's dangerous for self-defense.
17:07So we just made one video making fun of them.
17:10And then the video did really well.
17:12One thing led to another.
17:13And then now we make Bullshido videos where we just make fun of bad martial arts.
17:18We make a lot of people angry in the process.
17:20You know, but that's part of it.
17:22And it's a lot of fun.
17:23Let's ask Anthony.
17:25Mark said that when you saw martial arts that you thought didn't work,
17:32what was the reason for that?
17:34Did you just want to have fun?
17:36Or was there a warning that you shouldn't practice these things?
17:41Actually, it's both.
17:43We want people to know what martial arts are right and wrong.
17:47What's fake and original.
17:49So that's our goal.
17:51But at the same time, we make it funny.
17:53So that's it.
17:55We just do both.
17:57It's like their way.
17:58It's like their way to criticize the wrong things in MMA.
18:03Mark, I know I like your videos and a lot of people on the internet also appreciate them.
18:09But you talked about having a few bad encounters.
18:13Can you talk about the pushback?
18:15Of course, you're ruffling some feathers in doing this.
18:19Right now, I have a Kung Fu master in Poland that is kind of challenging me.
18:26And he's really angry.
18:27He's the first guy that's actually called me out on his social media channels.
18:31So that's entertaining.
18:32Sometimes I get death threats too.
18:35Troy has gotten some threats too.
18:38It's pretty entertaining.
18:40But we're very selective of our videos too.
18:42We don't just bash everything.
18:44That would be horrible.
18:45So we're very selective and we look at the technique.
18:47And we're like, okay, would this actually work?
18:49No, that's complete trash.
18:50Okay, let's choose this one.
18:52So we're very careful with the ones that we select.
18:55And with all of our experience in martial arts for so many years,
18:59I definitely believe we're the qualified ones to make those choices.
19:03I want to ask both of you, what's your favorite bullshido?
19:08Maybe the Russian Grandmaster.
19:10He's the guy who does the crazy hand movements.
19:13He's probably my favorite.
19:16And my dream is to one day travel there somewhere in Russia with Troy
19:20and go find him and be his student for a few days.
19:24Are you too serious about that?
19:25Half serious.
19:27Anthony?
19:28For me, it's the Indians.
19:30Because if it wasn't for the Indians, we wouldn't have started.
19:33We started with the Indians.
19:34So that's my favorite.
19:36And it's wild because some of these pages, they have millions of followers.
19:40The Indian bullshido guys that we make fun of, they have millions of followers.
19:44And all these people in the comments are not defending them.
19:47They're saying, great technique, amazing, thank you for sharing.
19:51And Troy and I are just scratching our heads and we're like,
19:53someone tries that, they're going to get hurt.
19:55It's never going to work.
19:57So I feel a bit of a social responsibility as a professional martial artist.
20:03That's correct.
20:04So it's actually my responsibility to point people in the right direction.
20:08And we try to do it in a funny way.
20:10All right.
20:11You have a message.
20:13Do you have a message?
20:15Lastly, promote your MMA gym.
20:20Do you have a last message overall?
20:24Yeah, please follow our gym and come train in our gym,
20:29Valiant MMA and Fitness in Quezon City.
20:32We're also looking for funny martial arts and fitness content.
20:35Please follow our social media accounts, Mark Mugen and Troy Anthony.
20:40There you go.
20:41All right.
20:42There you go.
20:43All right.
20:44Thank you very much, Troy Anthony and Mark Mugen Striegel.
