00:00PTV Sports is back. We got to know Joe Vincenzo, JL Tolentino, and J. Davila in our sports banter.
00:11Good morning, gentlemen. Thank you for joining us this morning.
00:17Yes, ma'am.
00:19Please introduce yourself.
00:21I'm Joe Vincenzo, founder and owner of the Philippine Combat Championship.
00:28I'm vice president of CROC Sports International Management and a former MMA international fighter.
00:37My name is J. Davila. I am an aspiring professional fighter.
00:42I have an upcoming fight at PCC this March 15.
00:48I'm the vice president of CROC Sports International Management and a former MMA international fighter.
00:53I'm the vice president of CROC Sports International Management and a former MMA international fighter.
00:56Please watch our fight on Saturday, March 15.
01:00First off, what is the Philippine Combat Championship?
01:06Can you tell us a little bit about PCC?
01:10The Philippine Combat Championship, ma'am Meg, used to be a platform.
01:17I made it a platform for our athletes to become stepping stones to internationals.
01:25As an international fighter, it was hard for me to find an organization or promotion to showcase my talent as a fighter.
01:36So right now, since I've made it to the international leagues, I've played in the Middle East and Southeast Asia,
01:44I want to create a platform for our Filipino fighters to showcase their talent.
01:56At the same time, I want to discover Filipino fighters like Marwin Quirante.
02:03For those who don't know, I'm Marwin Quirante's manager.
02:06I want to be able to do a lot of things like that.
02:08Marwin Quirante, I discovered him a long time ago.
02:13Right now, he's on there.
02:15The goal of the Philippine Combat Championship is to discover Filipino fighters in Visayas and Mindanao Park.
02:26Actually, we met Marwin Quirante here at the Sports Banter.
02:31He is one of the promising MMA fighters.
02:34As a matter of fact, he has a fight in Thailand.
02:37Yes, this coming March 30 in the WAN Championship against a very tough opponent, a Russian fighter.
02:43Sergio, with your advocacy, how do you plan to help or support our local fighters to be exposed internationally?
02:55First and foremost, PCC is free of entrance.
03:03It's free of charge.
03:05This will give a record to our Filipino fighters that are needed internationally.
03:12It's a good thing that I know some international fighters who will register their record
03:18to fight in the Philippine Combat Championship.
03:22That's the platform that I'm asking for.
03:24Filipino fighters are needed to make it international.
03:28Sir JL Tolentino, Vice President of PCC.
03:33What makes our MMA fighters stand out compared to other MMA fighters?
03:41To be honest, we Filipinos are really strong.
03:46This is our sport, our combat sport.
03:48We have MMA, boxing, karate.
03:50As long as we are in the combat sports, we are strong compared to other races.
03:55Our genes are there to fight.
03:57When it comes to standout, we just need exposure.
04:01Like what happened in our boxing with Senator Manny Pacquiao.
04:06Maybe that's what we see here in MMA.
04:08We just need exposure, especially to our fellow Filipinos here locally.
04:13Until now, MMA is not that well-known in the Philippines.
04:19Sometimes you hear the name of an international promotion,
04:23they know it, but it's an MMA.
04:25That's why we created an entrance in PCC
04:29for more fanbase to educate people about MMA.
04:35They can watch us for free.
04:37They can appreciate what MMA is.
04:43To date, we have a lot of MMA fighters who are famous in other countries.
04:48We have Brandon Vera, he's a heavyweight world champion.
04:52Edward Fulayang, a lightweight world champion.
04:56And of course, our very successful MMA fighter Joshua,
05:01the passionate fighter who just won the Strowweight award.
05:05Do you think we have this ability to dominate MMA in the international stage?
05:15Yes, definitely.
05:16Filipinos are known for being tough fighters.
05:20Definitely, we have this strong mentality that we can make it up.
05:24We can become a champion in the international league.
05:28It's just that we don't have many opportunities.
05:31Especially on this part.
05:33For example, Edward Fulayang and Joshua Pasho, they're in Baguio.
05:38If they weren't given the opportunity, imagine where they are now.
05:42This is the aim of PCC, to give fighters this time in Visayas and Mindanao.
05:48They can become international champions in the Middle East and South America.
05:54I believe, Sergio, we will have a tournament this coming Saturday,
05:59the PCC Championship 2.
06:01And one of our athletes is Jay Davila.
06:04Jay, first of all, how did you discover your love for MMA?
06:10Actually, ma'am, ever since I was a kid, I've always loved watching martial arts movies.
06:16But I didn't dream of becoming a fighter or it didn't enter my mind.
06:21And then, in 2019, when I officially started training MMA,
06:27and then, in 2021, when I officially started competing in amateur boxing.
06:35And then, after that, after my first competition,
06:37I kept competing in other sports like Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Boxing, MMA.
06:46So, it went on and on from year 2021 up to now.
06:50But you're relatively new to the world of mixed martial arts.
06:53Yes.
06:55But prior to that, do you have a martial arts background already?
06:58No, ma'am.
06:59I started in 2019 and I immediately trained mixed martial arts.
07:06So, is it pretty late to start at that age for MMA?
07:11Or is it still okay, Sergio?
07:14No.
07:15We have UFC champions.
07:17It depends, ma'am Meg.
07:20We have fighters who start early and then retire early.
07:25And then, we have fighters who start late but they become champions.
07:29So, at the end of the day, the urge, the hunger, the fatigue,
07:33the hunger of a fighter, his dream of becoming a champion,
07:36that's where it impacts, not age.
07:40For Jay, what was your background before?
07:42I mean, of course, you started when you were 21 years old.
07:45What was your career?
07:48Before I became an MMA fighter,
07:51I was a college graduate of BS Customs Administration.
07:56At the same time, I was also licensed as a licensed customs broker.
08:00So, before that, I worked in that field for two years.
08:04And then, after two years,
08:06maybe two years was enough for me to realize that this is not something for me.
08:12So, I need to pursue something that I like more or that I'm more passionate about.
08:18So, then I decided to give up that career.
08:21And then, I went to Mixed Martial Arts.
08:25Do you have moments where you look back and you think,
08:28what if you didn't leave your first career?
08:34Are there moments like that?
08:35Of course, it's not easy to be an athlete.
08:37Yes, ma'am.
08:38To be honest, there are moments like that.
08:41But at the same time,
08:44I think it's inevitable to have a what if.
08:47You will wonder what your career will be like if you didn't give up.
08:52But at the same time, ma'am,
08:54I'm still grateful for what happened and what's happening today.
09:00So, there are what ifs,
09:02but I'm still grateful that this is the path I chose.
09:08This will be your first professional tournament.
09:11Yes, ma'am.
09:12This March 15.
09:13How did you prepare to make sure that you're in the A-game?
09:19When it comes to preparation,
09:21there's no camp for me because I don't stop training.
09:25There are fights and no fights.
09:27I'm always in the gym.
09:28I'm always in the training camp.
09:30I always go to other gyms to prepare if there's a sudden fight.
09:35So, right now, I can say that I'm very prepared for that fight.
09:42Good luck.
09:43We'll be waiting for that.
09:44We will surely watch that.
09:45Sergio,
09:47what do you envision the direction of MMA here in the Philippines?
09:52And how do we compare it to our neighboring countries like Japan, Thailand, Singapore?
09:58As of right now, ma'am Megan,
10:01this is the perfect time for an MMA promotion
10:06because we have champions right now in the international scene
10:09like Joshua Fascio and Kuya Edward Folayang.
10:15This is the perfect time for an MMA promotion
10:18to discover fighters from other countries.
10:22What I see in MMA here in the Philippines is that it's going upwards.
10:26And like what I've said, combat sports, Filipinos,
10:29those are the things that other Filipinos don't see.
10:34That's the reason why I'm innovating them or introducing MMA to them
10:40so that all the kids will be aware that we're good at MMA.
10:44We're good at combat sports.
10:47And I'm sure that we can see that Pinoy is truly good
10:51when it comes to mixed martial arts, combat sports.
10:54Sir JL, I just want to ask you,
10:55how important is the grassroots program in developing our future MMA fighters?
11:02Our grassroots program is very important
11:05because that's where we become unique to other fighters internationally.
11:09You'll see each style.
11:11If you're international, you'll see each country's style.
11:14We Filipinos have our own unique style.
11:18Even right now, if you're going to watch on PCC,
11:20we have fighters from Visayas, Mindanao, from Bicol.
11:23Even from Batangas, like Jay, they have a different style.
11:28You'll appreciate their different styles.
11:30They're all good.
11:31Sometimes, they do the same thing, but their form is different.
11:35It depends on the region.
11:37In the Philippines, it's the same.
11:39So, how far can we go internationally?
11:42So, that's it.
11:43The truth is, we Filipinos are appreciated internationally
11:46because we're sure that if we're a Filipino fighter,
11:48the fight won't be boring.
11:51That's what we're aiming for for the international Filipinos.
11:54They know that it's exciting.
11:55Winning or losing in the Philippines, the fight is exciting.
11:58If we look at all the fights of our world-renowned MMA fighters,
12:03they're very aggressive when it comes to inside the court,
12:07inside the octagon.
12:08They're really aggressive.
12:11They're not the defensive type that runs around.
12:15Sir JL, what can we expect in our upcoming tournament?
12:21In our upcoming tournament, this is our second event.
12:25So, if you had a lot of fun in our first event,
12:29this is a better fight card.
12:33Here, like I said, it's eight bouts.
12:38These eight bouts are like an eight-course meal.
12:41They're all delicious, but the taste is different.
12:44They're all delicious, but the taste is different.
12:49So, that's what I can say.
12:51Please watch PCC.
12:53They're all exciting, but different.
12:57You'll see different things from them.
13:00Of course, my question is,
13:03I'm sure there are a lot of young people who are inspired to take MMA.
13:08What advice can you give them to start mixed martial arts?
13:14Guys, to the kids,
13:18this is the perfect time to start your MMA career.
13:22Aside from self-defense, it will enhance your physical abilities.
13:27And at the same time, you'll be able to relax.
13:31You'll be able to relax.
13:33It's the opposite.
13:35Everyone thinks that MMA is all about violence.
13:38No.
13:39In MMA, you will learn discipline.
13:41That's the first and foremost.
13:43That's the reason why, to the kids,
13:46and to the parents as well,
13:48this is the perfect time to start or enroll your kids in MMA courses
13:53or any martial arts-related sports.
13:57Jay?
13:59To everyone who plans to study MMA,
14:03it doesn't matter if you plan to fight or just study MMA.
14:09But you won't lose anything.
14:13Or you'll gain more if you start MMA.
14:17Character, discipline, and self-confidence are the first things.
14:21That's when you'll win.
14:22It doesn't matter if you want to fight or not.
14:25Just do MMA, and I promise you, you'll change.
14:30Finally, Sir JL.
14:32Ma'am, can I say thank you?
14:37I'd like to thank everyone who supports us.
14:40To Barangay Malamig, thank you for your support.
14:43They provide our ambulances,
14:46like Capsincha.
14:49To our venue, International Baptist College,
14:53to Pastor James Tika.
14:55That's why our MMA is different from other promotions.
14:59We're more on professional athlete vibes.
15:04We do our events inside a Christian school.
15:08So there's no liquor, no other vices.
15:11We're more of an athlete in the field.
15:14My advice to those who want to start their MMA career,
15:21there's no time to start.
15:26Anytime, even if you're old, even if you're still young.
15:30If you've thought about it, start now.
15:32To those who want to start their career,
15:34my advice is not just in MMA, but in any industry,
15:38don't focus on financial or monetary.
15:42Focus on reaching the top of your career.
15:46And then, everything will follow.
15:49You'll be surprised that you already have a price.
15:51That's so nice. That's such a good advice.
15:54Finally, Sir Joe Vincent, invite our viewers
15:57with your upcoming event this March 15.
16:01Hello guys, this is Joe Vincent,
