00:00PTV Sports is back and for our sports banter, we have with us the Mayor of Dapitan City, Sir Bullet Halosos.
00:12Welcome to PTV Sports, Sir Bullet.
00:14Thank you, Daryl and Paolo. Thank you for inviting me.
00:19Sir Bullet, we were just curious when we met you. I think your full name is Seth Bullet Halosos.
00:26Seth Frederick Bullet Halosos.
00:28Sir, why is your nickname Bullet?
00:30Actually, it's a long story. When I was born, our family business before was PBA.
00:37They brought the Washington Bullets, if you've heard.
00:42During that time, it was like a tournament.
00:46The Washington Bullets won against the all-stars of the PBA tournament.
00:53That's a nice backstory.
00:55It was the Washington Bullets, and now it's the Washington Wizards.
00:59But it's a very interesting story that you have an original name.
01:03My name doesn't have an origin, I just came up with it.
01:06Me too, Paolo. What's this Paolo?
01:08Paolo, I just came up with it. Paolo.
01:10Okay, okay.
01:12Sir Mayor Bullet, recently we held a triathlon here in Dapitan City.
01:18Very interestingly, aside from triathlon, our triathlon also became historical.
01:25Can you please provide a little background about this and how this triathlon happened?
01:31Last September, I think.
01:32Yes, actually this is the second time we've hosted Ironman Triathlon in Dapitan City.
01:38We are only second in the whole of Mindanao to host such an event.
01:43So it's a big honor to host a globally acclaimed event such as Ironman,
01:51especially in a small city like ours.
01:53But it's nice because Dapitan City is recognized for one of the premier destinations when it comes to sports.
02:01Sir, in terms of participation of this Ironman Triathlon that you mentioned, 5150, I think.
02:08How many triathletes joined and how was the level of competition in this triathlon?
02:14It became very competitive.
02:16This is what we can claim is the fastest 5150 in the whole country.
02:20So many elite athletes joined just to participate and to try to run the fastest time in such a short span.
02:30Our place is very beautiful.
02:33We made use of our three-kilometer boulevard, the sea, and swim, bike, and run.
02:40But sir, Mayor, how is this 5150 Triathlon in Dapitan?
02:45How big is this thing for our tourism in the area?
02:50It's big.
02:51Like I said, it's a big boost to our economy.
02:54Since you know, triathlon is not just one athlete.
02:58They come in teams.
03:00They visit, eat, and sleep.
03:03Sometimes, they practice.
03:05They stay longer in Dapitan to get to know the routes.
03:09In return, Dapitan City is recognized for its historical value as well.
03:16Many people go there because it's the first Ironman connected to the historic city, which is Dapitan City.
03:25It is also recognized for the historical trail of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.
03:32Mayor, I already mentioned our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.
03:36He exiled in Dapitan during the Spanish era.
03:41Interestingly, I read the part of our triathlon.
03:46We will walk the routes that Rizal walked.
03:50We also have the Noli Walk.
03:53Noli Run.
03:54Noli Run.
03:55Noli Run.
03:56They wore the clothes of the era of Noli Metangere.
04:01Can you please provide background regarding this?
04:03Actually, this is a one-of-a-kind run that every Ironman does.
04:08But this time around, like I said, it's the first time to have something like that.
04:12It's a themed run representing the characters of Noli Metangere.
04:18Many Dr. Jose Rizal are running.
04:23There are also Josephine Brackens.
04:25Aside from the characters of the book, it's great because not only can we learn or relearn
04:33the history of Dr. Jose Rizal for our youth,
04:36but we can actually run the same path that our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, used to walk.
04:45With that being said, Mayor, where can we give the knowledge of our sports fans?
04:52Where did the idea of having a Noli Run come from?
04:57This is a really good concept and you said that this is the first time to do this.
05:01But how did the idea come about?
05:06Actually, when I first sat as mayor in our administration,
05:11we really talked about doing all the events all around surrounding the history of Dr. Jose Rizal.
05:19Because only us in Dapitan City can claim where Dr. Jose Rizal has lived.
05:26Because we know that he died in Luneta and he was born there in Laguna.
05:32But where he truly lived and where his spirit still lives on
05:37and where he actually practiced all kinds of arts and his expertise,
05:44which was he became a doctor, an actor, a painter, a scientist, an engineer.
05:51It was all in Dapitan City.
05:54Mayor, besides sports, history of Dapitan City is also important.
06:02But in other ways through sports, what are the plans of the government
06:08so that we can do this kind of collaboration where they are fit through sports
06:14and they are still learning the history of this city, Dapitan City.
06:18Actually, just recently also, this is our second year to host a first international Arnis Tournament.
06:28We call it Arnis, Jose Rizal Arnis Challenge.
06:32Wherein we believe that the very first Eskrimador Filipino is our national hero again,
06:40Dr. Jose Rizal, him being a fencer.
06:45So that is really the tip of our national hero.
06:52Mayor, after these big events hosted by Dapitan City, is Dapitan City always open to host?
06:59Maybe you will host a big sports event, not just triathlons,
07:02but also grassroots events here in the Philippines, national sports tournaments.
07:06Is Dapitan City open to host?
07:08Of course, we really plan to not only have the normal tourism,
07:15which is beaches and beautiful mountains,
07:18but we also want to push for sports tourism and film tourism as well.
07:23But let's focus on sports tourism first.
07:25That's why even the National Age Group of our chess tournaments,
07:29me being part of the board of directors of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines,
07:34we hold it there every year in Dapitan.
07:37And whoever wins there, we send them abroad to represent our country.
07:42Mayor, let's talk about you.
07:44Mayor, you seem to be very active in terms of sports.
07:49What recreational activities do you enjoy?
07:54What sports do you play to stay fit?
07:58I don't think we have time to answer that one by one.
08:01But like I said, I'm also a part of all the sports events that we host.
08:09So actually, I'm one of the first mayors who competed in the Arnis
08:14and actually won against an international Italian Arnis instructor.
08:22And also, every time we hold Ironman in Dapitan City,
08:27I also join to show the youth that if your mayor can do it,
08:34what else can the youth do?
08:36And also to try to sway them away from the digital world.
08:40I hope they will go down and return to sports.
08:43You mentioned earlier, Mayor, that you're into bodybuilding also?
08:48I'm the president of the Mandirigma Bodybuilding Federation of the Philippines.
08:55So it's an NSA under the Philippine Olympic Commission
08:58wherein we are looking for athletes to send to other countries to compete during the Olympics.
09:05With that being said, Mayor, do we have programs in Dapitan?
09:09Like what my teammate said, grassroots programs.
09:14Do we have specific programs that will focus on building homegrown athletes from Dapitan?
09:23It's good that you said that.
09:25Actually, we do have a program.
09:29It's called Servicio Bilis para sa Mga Bata SBB.
09:34We do this yearly.
09:36For the first year, we had 200 participants.
09:39And last year, we had 2,000 participants.
09:42What we do is we have free classes for sports, singing, dancing, everything when it comes to the kids.
09:52So we started with the kids early.
09:54And we pay for it.
09:56We get a lot of instructors and professionals to teach in our summer workshop in Dapitan City
10:03so that the kids can learn.
10:06That's a good partner.
10:07Because the grassroots, we can't say that maybe our next Olympian will be from Dapitan.
10:13Yulo was last, right?
10:15He's from Manila.
10:16Aydilin is from Zamboanga.
10:18Actually, Yulo competed also in Dapitan City.
10:21At one point.
10:22Really, Mayor?
10:23When did he compete?
10:24Around 2014.
10:25He was still a kid then.
10:27But I saw a picture of him in Palanong Pambansa when we hosted in Dapitan City.
10:33In addition to that, Mayor, do we want to have such athletes from Dapitan City?
10:39Yes.
10:40We're trying to locally hone our athletes so that they can be recognized in a national scale.
10:50And then, hopefully, globally.
10:52So, we have a lot of support from the youth when it comes to sports in Dapitan.
10:56And speaking to that, Mayor, do we have athletes from Batang Pinoy?
11:02Batang Pinoy.
11:04Team Dapitan.
11:05Yes, yes.
11:06We did.
11:07We have tennis players and then we have arnis also as well.
11:11So, we're really focusing on specialized sports where we're really excelling.
11:16Instead of sending a lot, we're just learning where the athletes from Dapitan are doing well.
11:22That's where we're sending them to Palanong Pambansa or Batang Pinoy.
11:26Which just happened recently as well.
11:28How was their campaign?
11:30Did you get any medals from Dapitan?
11:32So far, nothing.
11:33We're looking for one.
11:34But, of course, we still keep trying.
11:37Because our program is still new.
11:39Yes.
11:40So, Mayor, aside from sports, what else is the local government doing?
11:45I mean, are the tourists still able to visit Dapitan?
11:49Of course, when there are more tourists, there are more jobs.
11:52Dapitan City is becoming more popular.
11:56What is the local government doing?
11:58Actually, I think we're successful in promoting tourism in our area.
12:02So much so that I'm happy to announce that Dapitan City, from third class,
12:08has now become a second class city.
12:10Just last week.
12:11And I think tourism has a lot to do with it.
12:15There are more tourists.
12:17There are more investors coming to Dapitan.
12:20It's being very, very safe.
12:22And we're continuing the historical value of our place,
12:28which is Dr. Jose Rizal, where he spent most of his most productive years in our place.
12:33So, there are a lot of people visiting.
12:34And I hope you can also visit sometime.
12:36Yes, for sure.
12:37For sure, Mayor.
12:38Is Dakak also there?
12:40The resort is also there.
12:42And we also have a theme park.
12:44The only one outside of Metro Manila.
12:46I hope you can also see it, watch it, and support our local talents.
12:52For sure, Mayor.
12:53Those who are performing in the theme park.
12:54We're still intrigued.
12:55It's like we want to join you.
12:58We'll go with you to Dapitan.
13:00But for us to go there, Mayor,
13:02are there any major sports events that we should look forward to here in Dapitan City?
13:07If there are already lined up, can we file?
13:09Yes.
13:10Every July 17, we have an event.
13:14It's called the Revisitamos 1892.
13:16This is the reenactment of Jose Rizal landing in the shores of Dapitan.
13:21So, it's a one-of-a-kind event where everyone is invited,
13:24visitors, locals,
13:26to walk with Dr. Jose Rizal.
13:30At 7 o'clock when he landed,
13:32all the way to where he was hidden.
13:37And everyone is invited,
13:39except you need to wear period correct clothes during that time.
13:44So, it's a one-of-a-kind event where the audience can participate in our event.
13:50Mayor, I will give you the floor.
13:53Invite all of the Filipinos and our tourists all over the world
13:58to come and see Dapitan
14:00so that they can also experience the rich culture of Dapitan City.
14:07Go ahead, Mayor. Thank you.
14:08We invite all Filipinos who have not yet visited Dapitan City,
14:15I hope you can visit,
14:18support local tourism,
14:20and see how beautiful the Philippines is.
14:23Let's start with the Philippines before we go out.
14:27Hopefully, you will also learn about the history and historical value of our place
14:35and how significant Dapitan City is to our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.
14:43Mayor, our tour director, Kit, has a question for us.
14:47Mayor, when we go to Dapitan,
14:50will we be able to see Dr. Jose Rizal?
14:54Do you want to go with Dr. Jose Rizal?
14:56Maybe Josephine Bracken is also there.
14:58Just kidding, Mayor.
15:00Thank you very much, Mayor, for inviting us.
