A look at construction of Dubai's Metro system
Transcript
00:00Deep under the ground in Dubai, labourers and engineers working around the clock on
00:10the city's new metro system. It's a huge project, and one that has grabbed the attention
00:15of the public. The RTA says the 15.5 billion dirham metro network is still on schedule
00:22for a 2009 opening. The main depot at Rashidiyah, which will be the nerve centre, is 60% complete.
00:29This is the heart and the brain of the Dubai metro project. All the metro projects will
00:34be controlled and supervised, operated from this depot. This is the Rashidiyah main depot.
00:40Each train will carry about 900 passengers during rush hour. They'll feature gold class
00:46carriages with leather seats, as well as a women's only carriage. Commuters will also
00:51be able to check their email by connecting to wifi. But frills aside, and engineers say
00:56the metro system will be one of the safest yet. I can say it's impossible for a train
01:01to derail in this tunnel. So you've got two trains, and there cannot be a head on collision.
01:06It's impossible for that to happen. Two trains shipped from Japan have already been spotted
01:11on a section of test track in Jebel Ali. But commuters will have to wait a little longer
01:16before they can ride the metro and wave goodbye to the city's traffic jams. Ashraf Helmi,
