00:00Basita Abad is a young and Filipino-American visual artist.

00:05In her 33 years of career in painting,

00:11her works have been exhibited in more than 200 museums

00:15and now her works are distributed in more than 70 countries.

00:20And as a tribute to her death anniversary,

00:23an exhibit was opened to show her works.

00:31This is what stands out in Basita's works

00:35depicting the colorful place where she grew up.

00:40She is a young woman.

00:42The famous painter Basita has traveled to almost 62 countries.

00:48And as a tribute to her death anniversary,

00:52an exhibit was opened to show her works.

01:00I think the thesis of the exhibition is in the title of the show,

01:04Basita Abad, Philippine Painter.

01:07So even though she lived a pathetic life,

01:11and she lived in 14 cities,

01:14she visited over 60 countries,

01:17as she said in an interview back in 1985,

01:22but I want to be known as a Filipino painter wherever I am.

01:26Basita's works can be seen in the exhibit from 1976,

01:31where she started to study painting,

01:34until 1986.

01:36Some of her works that can be seen

01:39are the famous Basita,

01:41which is a self-portrait.

01:44Her works can also be seen from her travels.

01:48Some of these are her ancient works,

01:51the Cambodian Bakwit.

01:53Her works of the ocean will not be lost

01:56as a lake on Batanes Island.

02:00I think it's quite important to,

02:02I think it's quite timely to revisit her now

02:05because in the last few years,

02:07she's kind of reached kind of global superstar status,

02:11you know, in the art world.

02:13She just had a major retrospective in North America,

02:19you know, and traveled in major museums in the U.S.

02:22and it's currently at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Canada.

02:26She was just part of the Venice Biennale.

02:30She was part of the main exhibition,

02:32Foreigners Everywhere.

02:34You know, and with all of this kind of global acclaim,

02:37I think it's nice to kind of look back at her roots.

02:42Basita's colorful works

02:44can be seen in the Metropolitan Museum

02:47until March 30, 2025.
