00:00The Department of Agriculture asked for help from the Camera to lower the price of rice in the country.

00:06The DA urged them to return the power of the NFA to buy and sell in the market.

00:12Melalas Mora has the report.

00:22We need the Congress' help to bring back the powers of the NFA.

00:28Agriculture Secretary Francisco Chu Laurel Jr. asked for help from the Camera

00:33to lower the price of rice in the market.

00:36In the continuation of the hearing of the House Kinta Committee or Murang Pagkain Supercommittee,

00:41the Secretariat argued that it is important to bring back the power of the NFA to sell cheap rice.

00:48This was prohibited under the Rice Tarification Law and the DA was affected as well.

00:54Now, what is happening to us is like we are fighting with one hand tied behind our back.

01:01If the NFA would bring back the power of the NFA with the authority of the DA Secretary,

01:09the DA will be more effective in punishing the rice traders

01:16and we will be able to influence the price of rice.

01:21Secretary Laurel is adamant that even if they want to punish those who are behind the overpricing of rice,

01:26it will not be enough for their power.

01:29Even so, they continue to strictly monitor the movement of the price of rice.

01:33I think that the price of rice should be from 42 to 49 max, 48-50.

01:40I agree with Mr. Chair that why is there a 50, I'm 60. That's not right.

01:47Unfortunately, we don't have the power to catch anybody in the market

01:53because we don't have the enforcement for that, Mr. Chair.

01:59As of now, the DA stated that they have different initiatives to give the public cheaper rice.

02:06Just in time for the upcoming Christmas, he is also hoping to expand their Rice For All program.

02:12As of the moment, Mr. Chair, we already have 48 stores that sell 40 pesos of rice.

02:22Our target by mid-January, by end of this year, in the next few weeks, our target will be 170.

02:31By mid-January, our target will be 300 outlets inside the market.
