00:00It is expected that the traffic in EDSA will be heavier this Christmas.

00:04We asked Benji Durango of PTV Manila for an update on how the traffic is going.

00:09Benji?

00:17Sheila, it's almost Christmas, but if this is the kind of traffic you will face every day,

00:22not Aguinaldo, but Mahabang-Mahabang, I'm sorry,

00:26the kind of traffic you will face every day, these vehicles that you can see behind me,

00:31those are the vehicles that are headed towards Monumento in Caloocan.

00:34I'm here, Sheila, in the northbound lane of North EDSA.

00:39The traffic is slow.

00:41It started around 5 p.m. earlier, and it will continue until this moment.

00:46Even heavier traffic, Sheila, is what we are waiting for from NCR as Christmas approaches.

00:52The MMDA said that even though this is the peak of the holiday season,

00:57there are a lot of vehicles passing through Metro Manila streets.

01:01This will increase by 10 to 15 percent in the next few days.

01:09Here in EDSA alone, there are 470,000 vehicles passing through every day at this time.

01:16Almost twice the vehicle capacity of EDSA, which is only 288,000 per day.

01:24There are reasons why this is happening.

01:26First, the sem break for students has already started,

01:28and usually, there are more vehicles during the vacation of children.

01:32Second, there are more new vehicles using the road,

01:36such as motorcycles, which account for 38 percent of the number of vehicles on the road.

01:42Third, there will be more provincial buses passing through EDSA from December 20 to January 2.

01:50This is to speed up the travel of immigrants to and from Manila.

01:55Around 2,100 provincial buses are expected to pass through EDSA.

02:01However, the MMDA does not want Carmaggedon to be re-opened to the main roads that were there before.

02:09That is why they laid out a few solutions.

02:11The late closing of malls until 2 a.m., carpooling to reduce the number of vehicles on the road,

02:19and the use of public transport such as carousel, MRT and LRT,

02:25which usually does not experience traffic,

02:27and the command of MMDA personnel until 12 p.m.

02:32Meanwhile, if you ask how slow these vehicles are,

02:36the average speed of EDSA vehicles today is 18 kilometers per hour.

02:42This is slower than the average speed of 21 kilometers per hour in the past.

02:49But the MMDA said that it will still be slower,

02:52up to 15 kilometers per hour, as Christmas approaches.
