00:00This is just a friendly PSA that the airplane mode button on your phone is not a conspiracy.
00:04So if you forget to put your phone on airplane mode, no, it's not the end of the world.
00:07The plane will not fall out of the sky and it won't even mess with the systems on board.
00:11However, it does have the potential to mess with the headsets.
00:15If you have an aircraft with 70, 80, 150 people on board and even three or four people's phones
00:21start to try to make a connection to a radio tower for an incoming phone call, it sends
00:25out radio waves.
00:26There's the potential that those radio waves can interfere with the radio waves of the
00:30headset that the pilots are using.
00:32Last night in San Francisco, we had pushed off the gate.
00:35We were talking to the rampers.
00:37We disconnected from the tug, started the engines.
00:40And then once we got the plane turned around, we started headed towards the taxiways and
00:44I called up ground to get our clearance as to which direction we had to go.
00:48And as soon as we start getting the directions, there's like this really annoying buzz going
00:51through the headset and it kind of sounds like there's a mosquito in my ear.
00:54Like I said, it's not end of the world, but it's definitely pretty annoying when you're
00:57trying to copy down instructions and it sounds like there's just like a wasp or something
01:00flying around you.
01:01So if you're ever curious why you got to put on airplane mode, that's why.
