00:00This morning, we are joined by a special guest who has a special collection of sports memorabilia.
00:08Iconic items that have a deep meaning and history in the world of sports.
00:14And to tell us the story behind his sports memorabilia collection,
00:18we will be joined live here in the studio by Dr. Michael Rico Messina.
00:23Good morning and welcome back to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:26Good morning, Audrey, and good morning to all the viewers of Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:32Okay, let's go back.
00:34For the knowledge of our viewers, why did you choose to collect sports memorabilia?
00:40Actually, I started with basketball magazines.
00:44I was a kid in the 90s and back then, sports magazines like SWM, Scoreboard were popular.
00:52Then during the pandemic, I decided to evolve my collection.
01:00So from there, I evolved into Philippine Basketball Memorabilia.
01:05Okay, but what was the first thing you collected?
01:09First, it was the magazines.
01:13Were these magazines from the 90s, 80s, or 70s?
01:18So actually, the first magazines I collected were from the 90s.
01:22And from there, I tried to buy from the 80s and 70s.
01:26So I was already backtracking in the history of basketball.
01:29Dr. Michael, for example, if you really want to collect a memorabilia, but it's not available in the Philippines, how do you find it?
01:40Usually, we have friends in other countries who are also looking for possible basketball memorabilia.
01:48Sometimes, they show it to me and when I'm interested, we can send it back to the Philippines.
01:55So we make arrangements to send it back to our country.
02:01I read in the U.S., when it comes to NBA players, sometimes they sign autographs.
02:10So how do you know if you have a memorabilia item?
02:15So in my collection, I have already collected a lot of in-person autographs.
02:22So the player in front of me, or the coach, or the celebrity, they sign the item in front of me.
02:29So now, that will be my basis.
02:31When I see that kind of signature, I compare it to the original signature of the person so I can check if it's really legit.
02:40And there are other evidences, right?
02:42That it really came from an athlete, right?
02:47But anyway, is there another item you want to collect that you had a hard time getting?
02:53Ah, maybe this one, sir.
02:56This ball.
03:02This one, sir, Audrey.
03:03This used to be very popular, right?
03:04Yes.
03:05So this is a ball from the 1910s.
03:081910, right?
03:09Yes.
03:10So that ball is actually from the start of the history of Philippine basketball.
03:15So if you look at it, it's made of leather.
03:18Then, it has thorns on the outside.
03:22So it's different from the ball that we see today.
03:26So that's the ball we're going to compare here, right?
03:28Yes.
03:29Okay.
03:30Sir Michael, please explain to us the history of this ball.
03:341912, who used this ball?
03:36Yes.
03:37So this ball was found in a school in Batangas that was supposed to be demolished.
03:45Then, the physical education department found this ball.
03:49So back then, we had tournaments that were called the Philippine Carnival.
03:55So the schools from different areas of the country would compete to become champions.
04:02So it means that basketball has been in the Philippines for more than 100 years.
04:06Yes, that's right.
04:07Since 1912, this has already existed.
04:08That's right.
04:09And I remember your first story to us.
04:13The people who played basketball in the Philippines were women.
04:17That's right, sir Audrey.
04:18Because what the Bureau of Education did was assign sports to women and men.
04:27So back then, basketball was just a new sport.
04:31It was just invented by James Naismith.
04:33So now, basketball was initially assigned to women.
04:37But eventually, it also picked up with men.
04:40And now, generally, most men play basketball.
04:45Well, RSP, this ball that I'm holding, this is the first basketball ball.
04:50If you compare it to the ball that we use today, this is heavier.
04:55This is what we usually use today.
04:57This is a molten basketball.
05:02Comparably, this is heavier than what I want.
05:05Yes.
05:06It's like I'm holding a coconut.
05:08If you look at it and it hits your face, you'll definitely fall asleep.
05:14But anyway, this is the change of times.
05:17100 years after, this is what we use today.
05:20Okay, let's explain one by one.
05:22Is this a rubber shoe? Where did this come from?
05:25So this is a game-used shoe.
05:28But not only who wore this.
05:31Justin Brown wore this.
05:34Oh, okay.
05:35Our naturalized Filipino player who plays gilas.
05:40So he wore this in his first gilas game against Lebanon.
05:44I think it was March 2023.
05:47I think the shoes were Freak 4.
05:51Then there's an inscription here, Sir Audrey.
05:57So there's an inscription here, Sir Justin.
06:02Okay.
06:03His first gilas game.
06:04Ah, this is his first gilas game.
06:05For those who are asking, what is the size of Brownlee's foot?
06:09Here, I can see it.
06:10Size 14 US.
06:1114, yes.
06:12Okay.
06:13Here it is.
06:14What is this jacket?
06:16Ah, so this jacket,
06:18as a kid in the 90s,
06:20one of the teams I played with
06:22was the Hinebra.
06:23Hinebra.
06:24Never Say Die.
06:25In 1996, the name of their jersey was Hinebra.
06:30Okay.
06:31So that's an actual team jacket from 1996.
06:35There.
06:36Then there are some signatures of some of the players who played for that team.
06:40You know, I was also a fan of the Hinebra in the 90s.
06:42Ah.
06:43That's why I'm happy that our guest here is Vince,
06:45the Prince.
06:46The Prince.
06:47There.
06:48This ball,
06:49who signed it and where did you use it?
06:51So this ball also has sentimental value to me
06:54because Samahang Basketball of the Philippines
06:59tasked me to have players and coaches sign this ball
07:05so that the SBP can have a memorabilia.
07:08I also have my own memorabilia.
07:11So that ball is from early this year.
07:15We have legs, right?
07:17Back then, our opponent was Taiwan.
07:20So in the dugout, the SBP sent me there
07:23and the ball was assigned to all the players and coaches.
07:27Okay.
07:28Even my coach team has a signature here.
07:30Yes.
07:31So players and coaches, Sir Audrey.
07:33Anyway, since you know a lot about sports,
07:36you're also a part of PTV Sports.
07:38When do you watch PTV Sports?
07:41I was given the opportunity by PTV Sports
07:44to have a segment called Treasures of the Game.
07:50So this is aired on PTV Sports every Wednesday morning.
07:55All right. Let's look forward to it.
07:57Again, thank you for giving us your time this morning
08:00and for sharing your story as a sports memorabilia collector.
08:04Dr. Michael Rico Messina.
08:06Thank you again.
