A pensioner has been refused a payout for Storm Darragh damage to his home after insurers claimed it WASN'T a storm - because the winds were "2mph too slow".

Dennis Iliffe, 77, was left stunned when his insurance company told him they could not settle his claim because wind speeds in his home town did not hit 55mph.

He has now been left counting the cost after his chimney and aerial were damaged by the powerful gusts which battered Kidderminster, Worcs., over the weekend.

Dennis said he was "absolutely astounded" to be told by insurers Ageas the 53mph winds that wrecked his home was 2mph too slow to be classed a storm.

00:00My name is Dennis. I've had to try to claim for a chimney and aerial that came down during
00:18the storm. Insurance companies won't pay us at all. They say it wasn't a storm because
00:23it didn't reach 55 miles per hour. Unfortunately I had to try and make a claim early on this year
00:31for a roof at the back that leaked in. I'd had it previously had it made into a tile roof
00:39but somewhere water got in and it caused damage to all my kitchen. The plaster fell off
00:47and I had to have it completely re-roofed, plastered, tiled and everything. But the
00:52insurance company wouldn't pay us again because it was 52 miles per hour I believe instead of 55.
01:01I feel I must tell people about this, old people especially, to beware. Talk about scammers online.
01:09This is an insurance company. I think the insurance companies are disgusting. They should be run
01:17nationally I think where everyone gets a fair crack of the whip. Not just taken advantage of
01:22by insurance companies like I'm with Saga which is for old people to look after their interests
01:29and they have an underwriter called Aegeus. It is this Aegeus that won't pay us out.
01:35It is completely and utterly wrong.
