00:00Grease is a movie that has always been and will always be relevant. The iconic soundtrack
00:06and outfits will live on in pop culture history forever. Not only that, but the film is still
00:12turning up controversy decades later.
00:15In January 2021, Olivia Newton-John defended the film against critics who said it was sexist.
00:21Then, Newton-John's co-star John Travolta and his daughter Ella Travolta paid homage
00:26to Grease in a Super Bowl commercial for Scott's Miracle-Gro, which aired in February
00:312021. Love it or loathe it, Grease's staying power is undeniable.
00:37In the Super Bowl ad, the father-daughter duo perform the same dance that John performed
00:41with Newton-John during the school dance scene in the movie. While the dancing is something
00:46that Grease fanatics can be excited about, the Scott's Miracle-Gro commercial has something
00:51that appeals to just about everybody.
00:53The Travoltas co-star in the commercial with lifestyle guru Martha Stewart, NASCAR driver
00:58Kyle Busch, The Office star Leslie David Baker, former football pro Carl Weathers, and Peloton
01:05instructor Emma Lovewell.
01:07The Travoltas first appear in the ad as the Saturday Night Fever alum struggles to set
01:11up a tripod camera, while his daughter watches on with amusement. Once he gets the camera
01:16in place, they start dancing, which prompts Baker to tell them,
01:20Hey, Travoltas, don't be tickety-tockin' on my grass."
01:24Though Baker seems annoyed by their dancing, Stewart seems amused by their performance,
01:29quipping,
01:30We still got it.
01:32Prior to the 2021 Super Bowl, John Travolta and his daughter Ella Travolta spoke to People
01:37about the ad. The Grease alum gushed, saying,
01:40"'Super Bowl' for me is a major yearly celebration. When Scott's Miracle-Gro asked me to do an
01:46ad for the Super Bowl with my daughter, I was thrilled, especially since we were asked
01:50to dance together."
01:51Ella shared similar sentiments about the Super Bowl commercial, telling the magazine,
01:55"'Each year, I always look forward to watching the Super Bowl and all of the great commercials.
02:01When Scott's Miracle-Gro offered my dad and I this opportunity, I was overjoyed to share
02:05this amazing experience, not to mention dance together.'"
02:09In August 2020, John shared a video dancing with Ella in honor of his wife, actress Kelly
02:15Preston, who died in July 2020, two years after getting her breast cancer diagnosis,
02:21which she initially kept private. Along with the video, the Pulp Fiction star wrote,
02:26"'My daughter Ella Travolta and I dancing in memory of Mama. One of Kelly's favorite
02:31things? Dancing with me.'"
02:33Neither John nor Ella mentioned Preston while promoting their commercial, but they did emphasize
02:37their family's love of dance. John posted,
02:40Here it is. Let's hear it for the daughters. It was fun dancing in the yard with Ella Travolta."
02:46Ella also shared a clip from the commercial with a similar caption, writing,
02:49"'Let's hear it for the dads who've still got it. It was fun dancing in the yard with
02:54John Travolta.'"
02:55The ad packed plenty of star power, and a surprising emotional punch, and the internet
03:00was quick to respond. One fan tweeted,
03:03"'Anyone else get weirdly emotional at seeing John Travolta in that Miracle-Gro commercial?'
03:08There were actually a lot of people who seemed to feel that way."
03:11Another viewer revealed,
03:12"'That commercial with John Travolta and his daughter makes me a little teary.'"
03:16Another tweeted,
03:17"'John Travolta and his daughter looking happy and healthy in that commercial after his wife
03:22passing this summer has me full-on crying.'"
03:25One fan eloquently shared,
03:27"'Between the general nostalgia of seeing him and the knowledge of how s---- 2020 was
03:32for his family with the loss of Kelly Preston, the sight of John Travolta disco dancing with
03:36his daughter isn't likely to be topped by any other Super Bowl LV commercial.'"
03:41One person wished there was more, tweeting,
03:44"'John Travolta dances and it's just like two seconds of a lawn commercial? Why isn't
03:48that the whole commercial or the halftime show? Just John Travolta dancing on a lawn?'
03:53It's tough to stand out among Super Bowl commercials, but the Travoltas managed to do just that
03:58and tug on people's heartstrings at the same time.
