00:00We need Team Sonic's immediate assistance.
00:03Project Shadow is far beyond anything we've ever encountered.
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at details from Sonic the Hedgehog 3
00:12that only true fans will understand the gravitas of.
00:15There will naturally be some spoilers.
00:18Number 10. Live and Learn
00:21This third film borrows several musical cues from the games.
00:24A piano version of the classic Green Hill Zone theme plays in the background
00:28as Tom and Maddie busy themselves with tedious hobbies.
00:38Escape from the City is also included on the track list,
00:40but the most prominent Sonic Adventure 2 song featured here is Crush 40's Live and Learn.
00:52Traces of the headbanging tune can be heard in the film's opening
00:55where Shadow is held at the gun-operated prison island,
00:58a locale introduced in Sonic Adventure 2.
01:01This is just a sample of Live and Learn,
01:03but that epic guitar riff and Johnny Jewelly's vocals
01:06are dialed up to 11 for the grand finale as Sonic and Shadow join forces.
01:20Number 9. Foot Tapping
01:22Outside of a pause button, nothing can make Sonic stand still.
01:25Even if you set your controller aside,
01:28he will impatiently tap his foot until you resume playing or drown.
01:32An early scene replicates the spirit of the games
01:34as Sonic races Tails and Knuckles through the woods.
01:37Falling behind, the blue blur ignites the afterburners,
01:41which might be a reference to the adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
01:49Sonic hits the goalpost just like in the games,
01:52but Tails and Knuckles are already waiting for him at the finish line.
01:56Yes! I did it!
02:01Both cheekily tap their feet, stealing a move from Sonic.
02:05Of course, these are just holograms
02:07as the real Tails and Knuckles prepare a surprise for Sonic.
02:10He's still the fastest thing alive, other than Shadow.
02:14You sure you want to challenge the fastest creature in the universe?
02:16I mean, that's kind of my whole brand.
02:18Number 8. Blow Into It
02:20Whether you were a Nintendo kid or a Sega kid growing up in the 90s,
02:24we could all identify with a mutual dilemma.
02:27Game cartridges not working properly.
02:29Before calling any hotlines for technical support,
02:31our first instinct was always to remove the cartridge and blow into it.
02:36Tom and Maddie get the same idea when a USB flash drive isn't responding.
02:40As they try blowing into it,
02:41Tails is quick to denounce this as an urban legend with no real scientific backing.
02:46You can't argue with results, though, as the USB suddenly kicks into gear.
02:50Game cartridges might be outdated,
02:52but as long as we're still using USBs,
02:54this old trick will keep blowing in the wind.
02:57Whether or not it really works.
02:59Number 7. Eggman Lore
03:01Jim Carrey delivers double the Eggman,
03:04playing Dr. Ivo Robotnik and his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik.
03:09In the saggy flesh.
03:11The elder Robotnik debuted in Sonic Adventure 2 with his granddaughter Maria.
03:16The film remains faithful to Maria's tragic fate,
03:18driving Gerald to seek revenge using his Eclipse Cannon.
03:22Like in the game, Gerald's plot to destroy the world here doesn't pan out.
03:26Although the moon could use some maintenance afterward.
03:28The film is loaded with several other Eggman Easter eggs.
03:32Robotnik has a crab mech lair similar to the Death Crab from Sonic Forces.
03:36The doctors bond at a virtual amusement park resembling Eggmanland from Sonic Unleashed.
03:41We also finally get to see Carrey in a more game-accurate suit
03:44that emphasizes the Eggman belly.
03:49Number 6. Shadow's Accessories
03:52Sonic's introduction to Shadow in the movie is a lot like their first encounter in Sonic Adventure 2.
03:57Meeting in a large city, Tokyo in this case,
04:00Sonic immediately sees the resemblance between himself and the Black Hedgehog.
04:04So does everyone else.
04:05Although there isn't a case of mistaken identity here.
04:08Now I know what's going on.
04:09The military has mistaken me for the likes of you.
04:13Sonic finds that while he may be fast, Shadow is even faster.
04:17Okay, he took us all at once.
04:19Winning this round, Shadow makes a getaway.
04:22But not before posing on his motorcycle with a gun.
04:25His chopper, known as the Dark Rider,
04:27and his firearm were also utilized in Shadow's 2005 spinoff game.
04:31Granted, Shadow doesn't need a motorcycle to go fast,
04:34and we're not sure why he barely uses his gun in the film.
04:37But whatever, it looks awesome.
04:42Number 5. Knuckles' Fear of Ghosts
04:44Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is essentially a loose adaptation of Sonic Adventure 2.
04:49The film cuts out some of the game's weirder elements,
04:52such as Knuckles randomly fighting a giant ghost in Robotnik's pyramid base.
04:59Even that boss fight is alluded to, however.
05:01Exploring Gerald Robotnik's hideout,
05:03Knuckles tenses up at the idea that this place might be haunted.
05:07Knuckles nonetheless insists that he isn't afraid of ghosts.
05:10Remember what happened last movie night?
05:14There's no such thing as a friendly ghost.
05:16Sonic and Tails beg to differ.
05:18Recalling a movie night where Knuckles got freaked out watching Casper.
05:21Knuckles versus Casper.
05:23It's the crossover we didn't know we wanted.
05:25After meeting King Boom Boo,
05:27we imagined that Knuckles would have a prejudice against all ghosts,
05:30even the so-called friendly ones.
05:35Number 4. Chao Garden
05:37For such a high-octane game,
05:39one of our favorite parts of Sonic Adventure 2 is simply chilling in the Chao Gardens,
05:43raising those little guys.
05:48Don't worry, buddy.
05:49In Sonic's cinematic continuity,
05:51Chao haven't quite broken out in the U.S.,
05:53but they're huge in Japan.
05:55When Team Sonic arrives in Tokyo,
05:57an advertisement for Chao in space can be spotted in the background.
06:00Recovering from their loss against Shadow,
06:02Team Sonic retreats to a Chao Garden.
06:05What is this den of madness?
06:07In this interpretation,
06:09it's less like a garden and more akin to an entertainment restaurant.
06:12Think Chuck E. Cheese,
06:14but with bluer animatronics instead of vermin.
06:17Speaking of mice,
06:18Tails is mistaken for Detective Pikachu,
06:20which is ridiculous.
06:22He sounds nothing like Ryan Reynolds.
06:29Number 3. No Food or Movies
06:32Recruited by Gun to deal with Shadow,
06:34Team Sonic boards a helicopter to Tokyo.
06:36Arriving over the city,
06:38Sonic isn't impressed with the in-flight entertainment and refreshments,
06:41or lack thereof.
06:42He jumps out of the helicopter saying a familiar line.
06:45This exact quote is taken from his introduction in Sonic Adventure 2.
06:49In that game,
06:50Sonic is confused for Shadow,
06:52being contained on a gun helicopter.
06:54They can't hold him for long, however.
06:56Busting out,
06:58Sonic condemns his captives for having no food and movies.
07:05Breaking off a piece of the helicopter,
07:07Sonic sky-surfs to the city below.
07:10Little callbacks like this go a long way
07:12in showing that the filmmakers understand their fanbase.
07:18Number 2. Sonic vs. Shadow
07:20After duking it out in space,
07:22Sonic and Shadow team up to save the world.
07:24To do so,
07:25they both must harness the power of the Chaos Emeralds,
07:28going supercharged.
07:30Although there isn't a showdown with a bio-lizard,
07:32the film's climax is mostly in line with the final stage of Sonic Adventure 2.
07:36Sonic and Shadow even recreate an iconic image from the game as they cross paths.
07:41Also like in the game,
07:42Shadow makes the ultimate sacrifice to honor what Maria would've wanted for Earth.
07:49Being a fan favorite, though,
07:51a post-credits scene makes it clear that Shadow the Hedgehog will return.
07:55Dr. Robotnik's fate is left up in the air, however.
07:57We guess it'll depend if Jim Carrey needs the money.

08:22How do you top Shadow's reveal at the end of the last movie?
08:26Like this!
08:27During a mid-credits scene,
08:28Sonic is confronted in the woods by another fan favorite villain,
08:32Metal Sonic.
08:40While Sonic gives the robot a run for his money,
08:42the Hedgehog soon finds himself surrounded by mechanical doppelgangers.
08:46Just when it appears the film will cut to black,
08:49a giant hammer comes swirling in.
08:51Wielding it is a female pink hedgehog.
08:54She doesn't say her name,
08:55but fans know this is Amy Rose.
09:00It's fitting that Metal Sonic and Amy would appear together,
09:03as both made their debuts in Sonic CD,
09:06the best Sonic game you've probably never played because it was on Sega CD.
09:10Real fans have a copy though.
09:15Who are you hoping to see in Sonic the Hedgehog 4?
09:18Rouge the Bat?
09:19E-102?
09:20Big the Cat?
09:21Big the Cat, right?
