00:00It is truly such a delight to be with both of you.
00:04I think this is like our fourth interview this year and I wouldn't have it any other way.
00:09This is the most exciting one yet because Angela, you are officially off the market.
00:15Show us that ring, baby.
00:16Yes, I am.
00:17Oh my gosh.
00:18Congratulations, Derek.
00:21Congratulations, Angela.
00:23You're officially engaged.
00:26How does engagement feel?
00:27It feels good.
00:28It feels great.
00:30It feels like...
00:32What does it feel like?
00:33It feels natural.
00:34Yeah.
00:35It feels like this is what I'm supposed to be doing and doing it with you.
00:40That's what it feels like.
00:41It feels natural.
00:42It flows.
00:42It doesn't feel like...
00:45It feels good.
00:46I just feel like it's the next step just in like growth.
00:49I feel like in life, we got just different steps.
00:51I think this is like a big step.
00:53So it's just, I feel prepared and excited and motivated too.
00:58Me too.
00:59To share like just more memories and then doing it the right way.
01:02Yes, doing it the right way and doing it in a big way.
01:07The proposal that went completely viral across the internet.
01:11So you're at Howard University.
01:30Yes.
01:31So Derek was already performing and then he called me up on the stage because he was like,
01:35hey, you know, you're going to perform fabulous.
01:37And I was ready for that.
01:38And then everything just took a turn.
01:40Yep, right before.
01:41Right before I performed.
01:43So I was like crying and then I performed.
01:46I don't know how you pulled off a performance after something as emotional at that moment.
01:50How did you get through that?
01:52I don't really know.
01:54I have no idea.
01:55You did a great job.
01:57So I want to know, you were the mastermind obviously of planning all of this.
02:02And I know how much Angela means to you.
02:04So I know how important this moment was.
02:06Tell me everything that went into pulling this proposal off.
02:09Did you call Howard and tell him?
02:11Who knew that this was going to happen?
02:13My whole team knew.
02:14Okay.
02:15My sister who's with me, she knew.
02:17My mom, my dad.
02:19I think everybody knew.
02:21No.
02:21The kids didn't know.
02:22They would have told me.
02:23No.
02:23They would have told me.
02:24They would have spilled the beans.
02:25Especially Dream.
02:26She would have told me.
02:27But it was hard because it was hard because everybody wants to tell Angela everything.
02:31So I'm like, make sure the people that I tell keep it tight.
02:35Yeah.
02:36So everybody knew and putting it together was definitely a lot of moving parts.
02:42Because it was a big stage.
02:44I wanted to make sure that it was right.
02:46Didn't want to slip up.
02:47Didn't want to have her out there looking crazy.
02:49I didn't want to look crazy myself.
02:51So I just wanted to make sure that everything was put together.
02:54So and then by the time we were on stage, my friends who was DJing, DJ Blue Star.
02:59He was prepared.
03:00I was like, yo, this is how we're going to do it.
03:01At this time, you have to cue this song up.
03:04And it just went perfectly planned.
03:07Like it just literally went as planned.
03:10Everybody was able to witness it.
03:12And it was a really big moment.
03:15Why this weekend?
03:16Why Howard?
03:17Tell me specifically why you wanted to do it there as opposed to maybe here at home.
03:21Yeah.
03:22Well, because I'm in L.A. a lot.
03:25It's hard to spend time as much on the East Coast.
03:29And that's where a lot of our family members are.
03:31And a lot of my family members can't really travel like that out here.
03:35So I wanted to go somewhere where both of our families are mutual and they're in attendance.
03:42And like everybody can really feel the love and see it in real time.
03:46And I felt like because she's from D.C.
03:48Yeah.
03:49Like she's really, you know what I'm saying?
03:51Like she's from D.C.
03:52So it's like, you know, not only that, but I feel like just to have that stage and that platform
03:59and just understanding that we were at a homecoming.
04:02There's a lot of young adults there.
04:04And that was just a great way to just showcase positivity and like
04:08put it in people's face so they can really see
04:11genuineness and see that there is love out there.
04:13You know what I'm saying?
04:14So I think it was, I think it was dope.
04:16I think it was fire.
04:17It definitely was dope.
04:18And I feel like after I got engaged, we seen a lot of other people getting engaged.
04:23Oh, you feel like you're starting the trend?
04:25Oh, yeah.
04:26And if anybody tried to tell me otherwise, that ain't true.
04:30Look at what your love can do.
04:32It can inspire others.
04:34I want to know, scale of one to ten, how shocked were you?
04:37Twelve.
04:38So you had no idea this was coming?
04:41That's why I just looked at him for a second.
04:43It felt like a second for me when, but when I looked at the video,
04:45it was like more like five to six seconds.
04:48And then you got up and I was like, OK.
04:50Because I had to soak it all in.
04:51Yeah.
04:52Yeah.
04:52So what was going through your mind?
04:54He gets down on one knee.
04:55This romantic song is playing.
04:57I forgot the crowd was there.
04:58I forgot people was there.
04:59And it was just me and Derek.
05:00And by the way, how many people?
05:0350,000?
05:04It was a lot of people there.
05:05Yeah, it was a lot of people.
05:05I just tuned out everything.
05:07Yeah.
05:07It was a lot of people there.
05:09Yes.
05:09So it just felt like an intimate moment between the two of you.
05:12For sure.
05:12Incredible.
05:14OK, so show off the ring.
05:15Yes.
05:15Show us the ring.
05:16Derek, this is an important, important decision.
05:20The shape, the size, the color.
05:21I want to know all of those things.
05:23Is this something you picked out together,
05:25or did you do this all on your own?
05:27She hinted about certain styles of rings that she liked.
05:31But over time, I've been shopping for it for a while.
05:35And my friend Lucas over at Ounces Jewelry, I hit him.
05:40I was like, yo, this is the time.
05:42I'm ready.
05:43Put me with his team.
05:44And I was going there back and forth.
05:46Sometimes I'll turn off my location real quick just
05:48to make sure.
05:49You get suspicious?
05:51No, I didn't notice.
05:52But I would go there, and they would just show me
05:55different engagement rings.
05:57And you know, it's a process.
05:59Because when you're looking for jewelry,
06:03you have to really know what you're getting.
06:04You have to know the cuts.
06:05You have to know the diamond sizes.
06:07You have to know, you know what I'm saying?
06:09And I really wanted to make sure that it was the right one.
06:11My mom kept hitting me, make sure you keep it.
06:13Don't lose it.
06:14Don't lose it.
06:15Precious cargo, yes.
06:16You know, so the whole time, I was just keeping it close.
06:19And that moment when I was able to actually get on a knee
06:22and open it, it was just like, wow, it's here.
06:26You know what I'm saying?
06:26So it was definitely a big moment.
06:29Yes.
06:30How do you feel about this ring?
06:31Is this your dream ring?
06:34I think that it's way more and better than my dream ring.
06:38Because when I wear it, it's like I don't even,
06:42it's like it feels like it's a part of me.
06:44It doesn't feel like I'm wearing the ring.
06:47Or the ring is wearing me.
06:48It's like I'm wearing the ring.
06:50And the fact that Derek picked it out,
06:52and I know how specific he is with certain things.
06:57In detail.
06:58Yeah.
06:59It had to be just perfect for the perfect woman.
07:01Right?
07:03You've been engaged nearly three months.
07:05Are you having conversations about the big day?
07:08Is there a date already booked out?
07:10Where are you at with wedding planning?
07:12We have a date.
07:13Already have a date.
07:14You want to tell us when?
07:16No.
07:17You want to tell us what season?
07:19Is it next year?
07:21The season is winter.
07:22It's definitely winter.
07:242025.
07:29Okay.
07:30Okay.
07:31Soon.
07:32Soon.
07:33Oh, sooner than later.
07:34Could it be winter 2024?
07:37No.
07:37No.
07:38Okay.
07:39No.
07:39I was like, give up the cameras.
07:42What does the dream day look like?
07:43Is it big or is it small?
07:45For me, I want it to be small.
07:47Yeah.
07:48But Derek, it seems like he wants it to be big.
07:51Okay.
07:52What is small?
07:52Is it just family?
07:54I would rather just be family.
07:57Yeah.
07:58Like just your kids, your mom?
08:00Just, yeah.
08:00Just family.
08:01And then I feel like, you know, the ceremony after,
08:06then we can invite people.
08:07But I feel like certain people shouldn't be allowed to my wedding.
08:11Because this is a commitment to God,
08:13not to like people and to be showing off and things like that.
08:16I want it to really be locked in.
08:19So intimate, family only, kids, presence of God.
08:25But this gentleman right here,
08:26are you planning a 500 person extravaganza?
08:30I wouldn't say 500, but I do have a pretty widespread family.
08:34Yeah.
08:34And so does she.
08:35And when you think about putting it together,
08:37like even when we did the engagement,
08:40um, it was about 15 people just there.
08:44You know what I mean?
08:45And those were just people that we let know about that.
08:47Right. A small group.
08:48You know what I mean?
08:49So it seems like, um, I prefer a smaller one.
08:53But I just think once we start sending out the invitations
08:55and we start remembering like,
08:57oh, grandma and uncle and it's just gonna keep,
09:02you know, that's when it becomes hard.
09:04But when it comes to like a bigger extravaganza,
09:06I really don't want people in my business like that.
09:08To be honest.
09:09Because it's about the two of you.
09:11Yeah.
09:12Right.
09:12And then I can't wait for the day
09:16where I get to see you in a wedding dress.
09:18Oh yeah.
09:19What is your vision?
09:21Angelic, clean, natural, beauty, elegance, everything, Angela.
09:30I know.
09:30Just, it's in your name.
09:32It's in your name.
09:33It's in your name.
09:34Are you thinking multiple wardrobe changes?
09:36Absolutely.
09:37Okay, so we're going full glam but full elegance.
09:40Yes.
09:41Great.
09:41And I know my makeup's gonna probably take like four hours.
09:44Well, listen, we gotta serve a beat always.
09:48How do you envision your little ones playing a role on that big day?
09:52Like was Dream born to be your maid of honor?
09:55Or your flower girl?
09:56Definitely the flower girl.
09:57Yeah.
09:58Yeah, not the maid of honor.
10:01And then King the Ring bear for sure.
10:03I think you know marrying Angela comes with two very special individuals.
10:09Yes.
10:09Who are very much going to formally be a part of your life.
10:12Yes.
10:13What kind of conversations have you had about taking on a new role
10:17and really, you know, having this fatherly figure presence
10:21with these two very special children?
10:23I think it's just more of just building a friendship with them.
10:27You know what I'm saying?
10:28Like I respect them and I respect boundaries.
10:32So our conversations are always just friendly.
10:36You know, I never try to overstep my boundaries.
10:38I act like I give them their time and I let them spend their time with their mom.
10:42But I definitely try to do my best to be there and show support while I'm around them.
10:49Just so they know that there's somebody who's with their mom and cares about their mom.
10:53Is really there for their mom and cares about their mom.
10:55Just so they see it in real time, you know?
10:57That's the most important.
10:59Yeah.
10:59What did they make of you being taken off the market
11:03and deciding to spend your life with Derek?
11:05When I told them, they were excited.
11:07Yeah.
11:08I had gotten good responses from them.
11:10They love this guy.
11:12Yeah.
11:12Yeah, for sure.
11:15Was Dream already like, can we look at dresses?
11:17Can we go do glam?
11:18Can we start planning?
11:20Is she like ready to start that process?
11:22No, not yet.
11:23Not yet?
11:24Not yet.
11:24I don't think she understands like the full concept
11:26and everything that comes with, you know, weddings and things of that sort.
11:30Yeah.
11:31Of course, like a wedding dress, but not like fully.
11:34Are you looking forward to doing those things with her?
11:36Absolutely.
11:37We've had many conversations, the three of us over the past year,
11:42about whether the family is complete or if we plan to expand.
11:47Now you've told me both that you definitely want more children.
11:52Has this shiny hardware on your finger,
11:54has that fast tracked any of these conversations
11:57that you're having about family planning?
12:00We're definitely going to get married first.
12:02Okay.
12:02Yeah.
12:02That's important to you.
12:03Yeah.
12:04It's very, it's important to us.
12:07That you're husband and wife.
12:08Yeah.
12:08Before you become mom and dad.
12:10Yes.
12:10Exactly.
12:11Okay.
12:12Do you see a timeline?
12:14Um, I don't know.
12:17It's hard to say.
12:19It might be sooner.
12:19I don't know.
12:22How soon?
12:24You said winter and I'm assuming winter of next year.
12:30So if we do the math.
12:32Deidre knows something.
12:32She knows something.
12:36Listen, I'm trying to be a little detective over here.
12:39I think the most important thing is that at the end of the day,
12:42you want to start a family with this woman.
12:43Yes, for sure.
12:44For sure.
12:45You would like this man to be the father of your next baby.
12:49Yes.
12:49She better.
12:51Yes.
12:52That's it with my chest up.
12:54Okay.
12:55So more babies.
12:56Yes, ma'am.
12:57Switching gears a little bit.
12:58I want to extend a huge congratulations to you.
13:01Two years of sobriety.
13:03Oh, yeah.
13:04I think we need to clap for that.
13:05Yeah.
13:06That is a huge milestone.
13:08It is a testament to your hard work.
13:10You get to wake up every day sober.
13:13How does that feel?
13:14Feels good.
13:15Clear.
13:16It feels really good.
13:18I mean, when you started this journey,
13:20Mm-hmm.
13:21did you have the foresight?
13:22Did you think you'd make it to this two-year milestone?
13:25When I first started, no.
13:27Why?
13:28Because before, in the past, when I would try to do my sobriety, I would relapse.
13:33I would get up to like four months, six months.
13:35But this time, I just let it ride out.
13:37And the things that normally would trigger me, I just cut it out and cut it off.
13:44What is it?
13:44Is it like extreme mental strength that you have?
13:48Is it, I know I'm about to marry this amazing man, and I've got these two great kids?
13:53It's just a combination, you know?
13:54And it's a combination of me putting myself first,
13:58because you have to put yourself first,
14:00and then you have to worry about the people around you.
14:02Because if you're not taking care of yourself, how can you take care of somebody else?
14:05Of course, of course.
14:07So two years sober, where are you at with your au naturel journey?
14:12Are you still doing it?
14:13Yep, still doing it.
14:14Okay.
14:15Working out, you know, eating, eating good, actually.
14:19Ooh, what does that mean?
14:20I don't know, I'll be cooking.
14:22Yeah!
14:23She's up in the kitchen?
14:25Oh yeah, what?
14:26I'll be eating good, but I'll be working out, and I'll be doing my fasting too, but yeah.
14:30Like intermittent fasting?
14:31Yeah.
14:32Wow.
14:32Well, you're a testament that it works.
14:34It does work.
14:34Incredible.
14:35It works.
