00:00Hearing the crescendo of the Great Highland bagpipes and the throbbing rhythm of the drums approaching,
00:07you might think you're somewhere in Scotland.
00:11But the men clad in tartan kilts and Glengarry hats are none other than the members of the Kuala Lumpur Pipes and Drums Band.
00:19Officially founded in 2009, the band has become a staple during the Christmas season in several malls across the Klang Valley,
00:26playing a variety of holiday favourites to usher in the festive period.
00:31Formed by ex-schoolmates who continued playing together after graduation,
00:35the band was created out of a shared love for music and nostalgia for their school days.
00:41But what really sets this band apart from other Scottish-inspired troupes is their diverse repertoire,
00:46which ranges from patriotic standards to Chinese and Indian classics.
00:52And we play, you know, Jalur Gemilang, we play Chan Malichan.
00:58Indian, I think, I don't know whether you're familiar, we have Piya Diwana, Lagu Sangam.
01:04Then Chinese songs, we have Tian Mi Mi, we have Shanghai Beach, we have a lot.
01:11Just like Christmas, we play all the favourite tunes, like Jingle Bells, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.
01:20Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer.
01:23Before every performance, the band's manager, Amirul Mazlan Arifin,
01:27sits down with the band to meticulously curate the setlist for the occasion, ensuring that each song is a perfect fit.
01:36At the end of the day, I don't want my performance or the band itself to just see whatever that I want to show them.
01:46I want it to be a mixture of everything.
01:49Being diversified makes us really unique because we have a lot of other bands as well.
01:58So what makes us unique is the people in it.
02:01Being diversified makes us stronger, I think.
02:05From Indian weddings to Chinese New Year to Independence Day,
02:09the KLPD ensures that no matter the occasion, they deliver a memorable show with a distinct flair, both personally and culturally.
02:20The Christmas season is no different.
02:24Accompanied by their brass section, the band marches through the mall,
02:28capturing the attention of curious passers-by and spreading festive cheer wherever they go.
02:34For some members of the band, participating in the merrymaking serves not only as a form of social glue,
02:40but also as a service to their community.
02:44I love to play and feel happy and feel togetherness.
02:48In multi-racial, we can unite together.
02:52We give back to our society, our community.
02:56And we see them happy with joy and we're also happy, we're excited.
03:01As Malaysians, we shouldn't have any differences in terms of our spirit for the nation, right?
03:09We should be more together in every way, every day in our life.
03:15We shouldn't be any different.
03:17For others, the thrill of performing and seeing faces in the crowd, both young and old,
03:22singing in unison, is what fuels their passion for playing.
03:27The passion of music is not based on race or religion.
03:35The passion comes from ourselves.
03:39This is really great.
03:42It unites us, regardless of race or religion.
03:48I agree.
03:52As the crowd fades and the Yuletide season draws to a close,
03:55the band remains a powerful reminder of the harmony that can emerge when we come together,
04:00transcending creed, race, and background, to create something that resonates with the hearts of all.
