The Masjid Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, a 43-year-old mosque featuring Middle Eastern architecture on a 1.3-hectare plot in Jalan Sultan Mahmud, Kuala Terengganu, is set to host Terengganu’s first public caning after Friday prayers.

The Kuala Terengganu Syariah High Court handed down the sentence on Nov 20 after a widower with five children, Mohd Affendi Awang, 42, pleaded guilty to repeated khalwat offences under Section 31 (a) of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Takzir) (Terengganu) Enactment Amendment 2022 for khalwat.

00:19Preparations were in full swing on Thursday when reporters from majority visited the mosque.
00:25Staff from the Terengganu Sharia Judicial Department and the mosque's management committee
00:29were seen finalizing arrangements.
00:32A red barrier rope was set up from the mosque's back door to Asim Hall, the designated location
00:37for the punishment.
00:39The barrier is believed to restrict access to authorized witnesses, while notices prohibiting
00:45photography and videography were posted around the hall.
00:49Tables and chairs were arranged near the hall's entrance for security checks, with police
00:54officers assigned to enforce restrictions on bringing communication devices into the premises.
01:01Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohamed Noor announced on
01:07Wednesday that 40 officers and personnel would be deployed to ensure security and the smooth
01:13execution of the caning process.
01:15He also confirmed that only 70 individuals would be allowed to witness the event.
01:20So far, 13 media representatives were understood to have applied to witness the public caning.
01:26The remaining 57 involve local religious congregations, representatives of the Terengganu people,
01:33and representatives of NGOs and government agencies.
