Wolves 2 Manchester United 0 - Liam Keen and Nathan Judah analysis
Transcript
00:00Hello, I'm Nathan Judah. That is Wolfhams, the Wanderers reporter. It is Mr. Liam Keane.
00:14Liam, people say Christmas Day was yesterday. Christmas Day was the 22nd of December, wait,
00:18less day, and it was the 26th of December, home against Manchester United. Vitor Pereira,
00:23what a difference a week makes. Played 2-1-2. Wolves are out of the relegation zone. It
00:27cannot be much better, can it? Video done, mate. Back-to-back wins, back-to-back clean
00:34sheets. Home alone? I tried, I didn't put in any effort. These guys put in the effort
00:43today, by the way. Two a man, they were excellent. There's not a single player I could pick out,
00:47similar with Leicester, that you couldn't fault for having a poor performance. At worst,
00:54there were consistent 7 out of 10s in this game. There were obviously players that went
00:58above that. Wolves deserve to win this. Now, similar to Leicester, United fans are going
01:03to love this. United are, I mean, they're bad. I think they're 14th tonight and they
01:09are a bottom 6 or bottom 7 side. They're poor. Awful. But that doesn't take away from the
01:14fact that Wolves deserve to win the game. There's a National Man United journalist who
01:20just looked in disgust at that comment. They're terrible. Well, they are terrible. I didn't
01:25even see it, you'll have to point it out to me. Yeah, I will do, yeah. Terrible. Awful.
01:29They are shoddy. I hope you don't have to pick up on this. It's fine, it's fine. And
01:34they think they're the same, mate. That's fair. At the same time, you can't take away
01:39from the fact that Wolves were the better side. That Wolves were composed, were organised,
01:45were full of fight, were full of quality going forward. Now, there were times in the first
01:48half that it wasn't a great wash. No, of course. That was mainly due to the fact that
01:52Wolves probably didn't take a few chances, it was a little bit... Maybe there's a couple
01:56of laws in the game at times, but Wolves had control over the game. That's the biggest
02:00compliment I can pay this side. A side that only a few weeks ago looked down on out, in
02:04complete disarray, disorder, lack of composure, mistakes. A player like, and I'll pick someone
02:11out who, not because I picked him in the beginning of the season as one of the potential players
02:14of the season, mistakenly, Totti Gomez was fantastic today, I thought. Now, again, there's
02:21a couple of moments where he does slip up a couple of times, there is a rick in him
02:24at times, but aerially and with the ball on the floor, I thought he was fantastic. Looked
02:31after the ball really nicely, defended everything, got his head on everything. And you need players
02:35like that making massive strides and massive improvements for Wolves to get out of this
02:40mess. And at the moment, they're doing exactly that.
02:42A lot of people will say that the Bruno Fernandes red card was the turning point in the game.
02:45I mean, really, we said in the first half and the beginning of the second half, Wolves
02:49were in control. They were the one who were most likely to score, regardless of the sending
02:52off or not. But of course, 11 versus 10, Beatleborough's first home game in charge against a side who,
02:58like you say, are just so out of form in Manchester United and lacking confidence. I mean, two
03:02sides, really, but that Leicester City game was absolutely huge. That was the chance,
03:06wasn't it, that they needed to go in and show their domination. Now, it's one thing doing
03:10that. You see a lot of 11 versus 10 and teams cannot break them down. They go behind the
03:14ball. But Wolves broke Manchester United down superbly. Of course, the corner started things
03:19off and, I mean, Onana was not a particularly happy man. But you look at Guedes, who was
03:23in the box again, by the way. I thought he was excellent today. Off the ball as much
03:27as on it. His work rate was the best I've seen it, which is brilliant. But he puts his
03:30hands up, so there's nothing when we have to have a look at it. There's no foul there.
03:34It goes straight in. I mean, he's going to be a huge miss as and when. I mean, let's
03:37hope it gets less. Let's hope it's in another three or four months' time. But we know it's
03:40going to be coming that bad. Yes, most likely. But a fantastic goal. And then for me, a pivotal
03:46point to finish this game off, that he was unselfish in getting Hwang Hee-chan, who's
03:50going to be, I think, still very, very important for Wolves going this season. Again, the first
03:54substitute to be used today by Pereira to square it off to him. He could quite easily
03:58have shot. That will give someone who we know is a confidence player in Hwang Hee-chan massive,
04:03massive encouragement going into Spurs away.
04:05100%. Yes, Wolves were fortuitous in some respect, because Fernandes gets himself foolishly
04:11sent off. I mean, and it is a second yellow, without a doubt. There's an argument in what
04:15could be worse than that. So that was fortuitous to some degree, but you know, you take what's
04:20important. The way that the goal goes in from Kunya, again, fortuitous to some degree. But
04:24Wolves earned it. Wolves deserved it.
04:26Kunya's been taking corners consistently this season.
04:28And I'll tell you what, that was a fantastic wicket.
04:30Brilliant corner, yeah. Our son do the same recently.
04:32Who we know is a flapper. We know we made mistakes. You're not a fan of him at all.
04:37I think he's absolutely dreadful.
04:39We know that that's the kind of corner you put on a goalkeeper like that. No disrespect
04:43to Jose Sarr, he's been that kind of goalkeeper at times in the past. Again, thought he was
04:47fantastic today, by the way.
04:48Looks a different player again.
04:49Yeah, exactly. That's the moment, yeah, slightly fortuitous, but Wolves earned it. Wolves deserved
04:54it. And as you say there, that moment, so Tommy Doerr wins the ball brilliantly. I know United
04:58are trying to get back into the game, but leaving one defender on two forwards. And
05:02by the way, Martins is nowhere near Kunya as well. Seems a strange decision. Goes beyond
05:07him. And he's got the quality. We know he can score that himself.
05:10Of course he can.
05:11But he sets a player up that we've been backing. We know how important and how good Hwang Hee
05:15Chan can be. He's been bang out of form and bang out of confidence. But that's going to
05:19do him the world of good.
05:20In front of these fans as well. They've been on us back at times.
05:22Exactly, yeah. He finished it, took Wolves over the line. A deserved 2-0 win. And another
05:28clean sheet, which is massively important. And Wolves are looking really, really strong
05:32going into the next games. It's amazing what a couple of Wolves can do.
05:37We're talking about a new manager bounce, but this is far beyond what anyone would have
05:41ever thought when they made the decision to bring Vito Pereira in.
05:44No, absolutely. And yes, the players have to shoulder some responsibility for how poor
05:52that run was under Gary Neville, without a doubt. But he's been able to come in and change
05:57some of the basics. Wolves are far more composed. They're far more organised. They're better
06:00than set pieces. They'll concede goals and they'll lose games this season under Vito Pereira.
06:05Of course they will. But they look so much stronger and confident.
06:09Confident is a massive word in this particular instance. And he spoke about that a lot in
06:12his unveiling press conference. They look so much more composed, organised and confident.
06:17And eventually, when you get those kind of characteristics back, the basics seem so simple,
06:22don't they? And Wolves are doing the basics really well. And that's the bare minimum you
06:25need and you can get results.
06:27They just look organised on the pitch and they have not looked organised this season.
06:32I just wonder whether Gary Neville tried to do too many things and was almost too clever.
06:36And Pereira's only had a short time to work with these players, but it looks like he's
06:40stripped it down, made it simple, showed the ability. These are not bad footballers. These
06:45are very good footballers. But it's easy to say you're too good to go down, you're not
06:48too good to go down. But it looks like they're doing the simple things well and then they
06:53can work on it. And maybe it was too much too quick with Gary O'Neill. But they're playing
06:57for this manager. They're ready to go. And out the bottom three tonight. I know Leicester
07:01are playing in a little bit against Liverpool, but they'll get beat.
07:04So it's just a fantastic...
07:06I hope that doesn't come out to bite you now. I'd be so proud of you.
07:08It's a fantastic, fantastic start to Pereira. And they go to Spurs now.
07:12Buoyant, really. And the Spurs team again, you know, again, we looked at these fixtures
07:17and we said, OK, well, the difficult fixtures start at home against Manchester United.
07:21But you think, well, home against Manchester United is a winnable game.
07:23Away against Spurs is a winnable game. They're now going for three wins on the bounce,
07:26which is a fantastic, fantastic start to Pereira.
07:29And the fans are behind them as well, which is huge.
07:31I know there's issues with Geoff Shear. I know there's issues with the fan base.
07:34You can understand it. But on the pitch and around what these fans and what these players
07:38will need is fans to be behind them. And it looks like they are.
07:41And that's what you need to galvanise this team.
07:43And after beating Leicester, we thought this had the potential to be a bit of a special night,
07:46didn't we? I don't want to be the person to say it, but before kick-off,
07:50I did predict 2-0. Speaking to a Sky Sports colleague,
07:53I did predict 2-0. Not boasting.
07:59He doesn't know who you are.
08:03There's one thing I think is really important to pick out.
08:05With the fans being a massive part of this, the fans were fantastic today.
08:08And they're going to need to be to get behind this team.
08:11But there's a lot of togetherness there. Now, I know results are going to help that.
08:14But it had the potential to be a special night here tonight.
08:17And it feels just like that. A real special festive fixture,
08:20if I can get my words out. And we've seen the players,
08:25the fans, the staff, everyone come together
08:28when that second goal goes in. And it felt like a big moment.
08:31This team's on an upwards trajectory. They just have to continue that momentum.
