00:00Put on your green jumpsuits, Squid Game is back, which means it's time to learn a new
00:05slate of deadly games, as Season 2 refreshes the tried-and-true Battle Royale formula.
00:11Here's a rundown of all the new games in the follow-up to Netflix's smash hit.
00:17The first new game introduced in Squid Game Season 2 is a tweaked version of Rock-Paper-Scissors,
00:23unique to Korea.
00:25After watching the mysterious recruiter play cruel mind games with several unhoused people,
00:30Gi-hun's hired associates get themselves captured by the sadistic salesman.
00:34They awaken in a dark room, where they are bound together, held at gunpoint, and forced
00:39to play this new game, called Rock-Paper-Scissors Minus One.
00:44This variant requires players to use both hands for each play.
00:48Instead of throwing out only one choice each round, each player throws out two, then removes
00:53one from play after seeing their opponent's hands.
00:56It adds an additional layer of psychological gameplay to the original recipe contest, which
01:01makes it even more fitting for Squid Game.
01:04The threat of death in Rock-Paper-Scissors Minus One comes from an additional game of
01:09Russian Roulette being played on the sidelines by the recruiter.
01:13Russian Roulette involves two or more people loading a standard six-shooter revolver with
01:18only a certain number of bullets, thus leaving blank spaces in the cylinder that will not
01:23react when the gun is fired.
01:24Each player then takes turns firing the gun, gambling with their own life.
01:28Not much is known about how Russian Roulette came to be, but as seen in Squid Game, it's
01:33a very adaptable game, the dynamics of which can be altered dramatically by a number of
01:38factors.
01:39When the recruiter first begins the game, he spins the cylinder for each round, meaning
01:44each pull of the trigger carries the same one-in-six chance of ending a life.
01:49When he later plays the game with Gi-Hun, however, he does not move the cylinder after
01:53the initial spin, which means the likelihood of death increases each time the trigger is
01:58pulled.
01:59Their contest ultimately results in one of Season 2's biggest, most jaw-dropping deaths.
02:04The third variation, in which the cylinder is filled with five bullets, is less common
02:13and is definitely more despicable.
02:16If there's one game in Squid Game Season 2 that most viewers feel confident they could
02:20beat, it's Flying Stone, the second game in the six-legged race.
02:25It simply consists of a player throwing a stone at another, standing stone, which eerily
02:31looks a lot like a headstone in a graveyard.
02:33If they knock the stone down, they succeed, and are allowed to move forward in the race.
02:38If not, they must make their way back to the stone, retrieve their wayward projectile,
02:43and start again.
02:44Stone throwing as a means of recreation is obviously not specific to Korea, and has been
02:49around since at least the days of Ancient Greece.
02:52The third game in Squid Game Season 2's six-legged race is Gongi, a tricky test of skill.
02:59Played with five colorful stone pieces, the game tests your hand-eye coordination by having
03:04you throw one stone up in the air while trying to collect others from the playing surface.
03:10You begin by throwing all five stones in front of you like dice.
03:13Then, as Squid Game Season 2 explains, you simply toss and grab each stone consecutively.
03:20But it's not that simple.
03:21You then throw all five stones in the air, and attempt to catch them with the back of
03:25your hand.
03:26And finally, you launch them from the back of your hand and catch all five one last time.
03:32As involved as it sounds, Squid Game makes it look a lot easier than Flying Stone, or
03:37the dizzyingly difficult game that follows it.
03:40If you give up now, I'll kill you before any of your damn gods can.
03:45After the players complete Gongi, the six-legged race progresses to the spinning top.
03:50The rules are seemingly very simple here.
03:52A player must wrap a length of cord around a top, launch it from the palm of their hand,
03:57and successfully get it to spin once it lands on the ground.
04:00Think of the Japanese spinning toy Beyblade, but much more difficult, and in the world
04:05of Squid Game, definitely more deadly.
04:07It also bears a similarity to the Korean game, Pangi Chigi, which also involves launching
04:13spinning tops with lines of cord.
04:15In that game, however, the player is also required to prolong the top's spin as much
04:19as possible with a wooden stick.
04:22The final contest of the six-legged race is Jegi, which American viewers will likely recognize
04:27for its similarities to the game Hacky Sack.
04:30Like that game, Jegi consists of a player hitting an object with their foot as many
04:34times as possible.
04:36In this case, it's the namesake Jegi, which looks like a small, paper-wrapped disc adorned
04:41with ribbons, similar to a badminton shuttlecock.
04:44The origins of Jegi are not exactly known, with even its cultural genesis being up for
04:50debate.
04:51Some attribute it to Korea, others to China.
04:53Today, it is largely played at festivals during Korean holidays, including an autumn harvest
04:58festival and the Korean New Year.
05:01Arguably the best new game of Squid Game Season 2, Mingle is just as diabolical as
05:07it is fun to watch.
05:09The third official game of this new slate after the six-legged race, it takes place
05:13in a large, rotating room with a carousel at its center.
05:17As the room rotates, a song plays for a random amount of time.
05:21Once the room and the song stop at the same time, a number is called.
05:25Players must then get in groups of that number and find safety behind one of the room's locking
05:29doors, or be eliminated.
05:32Mingle is a popular game across the world that is often used as an icebreaker, in environments
05:37like college dorms or new office buildings.
05:40Sometimes, once a group of a certain number is formed, players will be prompted to exchange
05:45facts about themselves.
05:46Don't call me dude, we're not friends, got it?
05:50Hopefully when you bust out Mingle, or any one of the games from Squid Game Season 2
05:54at your next party, things don't get quite as intense.
