00:04He won the presidency, I think, because he was the un-Nixon.

00:15People think that he was unsuccessful.

00:18But he passed more than most presidents do in two terms.

00:23I had the best batting average in the Congress

00:27in recent history of any president except Lyndon Johnson.

00:31He saved every hostage that was held in Iran.

00:34He passed landmark legislation.

00:37Big things like energy policy and giving back the Panama Canal.

00:42He put solar panels on the roof of the White House.

00:45Back then.

00:46I think he's most proud of the fact that there was peace

00:51for the four years that he was president.

00:53We never fired a bullet, we never dropped a bomb,

00:55we never launched a missile.

00:56I think he thought he was a great president.

00:59President Carter's lasting legacy comes out of his post-presidency.

01:04No one would disagree that he's one of the great post-presidents we've ever had.

01:09He devoted himself to poor people.

01:12He built houses for poor people.

01:14He spent his life trying to get rid of certain diseases in Africa

01:19that were killing people unnecessarily.

01:21He won the Nobel Peace Prize not when he was president, but after.

01:25He died knowing that he had lived a good life

01:29and that he did wonderful things when he was president.
