00:00More than 160 were the victims of the fire before the new year's greeting.
00:07While the East Avenue Medical Center is preparing for the victims of the fire,
00:12the hospital has also issued a code white alert.
00:15This is what Rod Laguzar reported.
00:19For this year, the new home of the East Avenue Medical Center
00:23is the designated place to receive fireworks-related injuries during the new year's greeting in 2025.
00:29This was first used for COVID-19 cases.
00:32According to Dr. John Polner, the spokesperson of the East Avenue Medical Center,
00:37the equipment and supplies of the hospital are now ready.
00:40When a patient arrives here, they will first go to our triage area.
00:45In the triage area, a doctor is assigned to look at the cases of patients,
00:52be it related to fireworks-related injuries or surgical or medical conditions.
00:58Then, the doctor will determine where the patients will go.
01:02The hospital has a code white alert.
01:04This means that the hospital personnel are only in the area.
01:08In case they need additional manpower, they can easily go to the hospital.
01:13As of 6 a.m., there are already 12 fireworks-related injuries here in the East Avenue Medical Center.
01:20These include the victims of firecrackers, whistle bombs, five-star and non-firecrackers.
01:25According to NER, most of the victims are passive users.
01:28This means that they did not use the firecrackers themselves.
01:31Two of them are currently admitted to the East Avenue Medical Center,
01:35while the remaining 10 are already at home.
01:37For the whole monitoring period of firecrackers last year,
01:41the East Avenue Medical Center has a total of 24 cases.
01:46Now, it's only December 30, we have 12 cases.
01:53We don't want this to happen, but we are, for worst-case scenario,
01:58we are anticipating more patients as the new year approaches.
02:03Meanwhile, according to the Department of Health, as of 6 a.m. on December 30,
02:07there are already 163 cases of firework-related injuries.
02:11From this number, there are 21 new cases today.
02:15This is higher than 44% compared to the same day last year.
02:20And out of 135 cases, only 11 are under the age of 19.
02:25And in case of a firecracker, the East Avenue Medical Center has guidelines.
02:29First, they need to clean the wound.
02:33They can use water or soap.
02:36Then, they need to wrap it in a clean cloth and bring it to the hospital.
02:41While the hospital is also preparing to respond in case of a firecracker.
02:47Aside from firework-related injuries, the Department of Health also oversees
02:50cases of stroke, heart attack, asthma, food-related illness, and alcohol-related trauma.
02:56Rod Laguzat for Pabansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
