Authorities in Rome have only erected two of the four large tents they'd promised to provide around 250 camp beds for the homeless this winter.

00:00For the 2025 Jubilee, Rome's city council decided to invest 4.3 million euros in four
00:08canopy structures near the Termini, Tiburtina, Ostienzi and San Pietro stations to offer
00:14shelter from the cold to homeless people. In the municipality's plans, the shelters
00:20should be able to accommodate up to 70 people a day, 24 hours a day. Many, such as the head
00:26of reception at the Miglio facility, have welcomed the initiative, stressing, however,
00:31that this is not a long-term solution.
00:34Margarita from Poland has lived in Italy for 33 years. After months in the cold, she found
01:01shelter at Ostienzi, thanks to the municipality of Rome, and now can relax with a place to
01:07sleep for the next few months.
01:30With around 250 beds in total, the four tents remain a marginal as well as a temporary solution.
01:38During a census last April, during the Night of Solidarity initiative in Rome, some 2,200
01:44homeless people were counted in the limited area. But broader data collected at the end
01:50of 2022 speak of around 22,000 homeless people in the capital. The municipality has promised
01:57new beds by 2026.
02:27For the other two, we will have to wait at least until January 2025.
