The search is on for the first female F1 World Champion

The search is on for the first female F1 World Champion, with teenager drivers from around the world being put through their paces at professional driver development camp in Austria.

The camp, organized by More than Equal, a not-for-profit, dedicated to make history by finding and developing a female Formula 1 World Champion, saw six girls, all aged between 13 and 14 being exposed to professional race training and coaching.

The training, at AVL Racetech's headquarters in Graz, Austria, is part of detailed and systematic development program aimed at preparing the girls for the competition in the Formula 4 series as a first steppingstone on their journey to F1.

00:00Hi, I'm Tom Stanton, I'm Head of Driver Development at More Than Equal. This week
00:20we're with AVL and we're here to help drivers be a little bit better every day using engineering,
00:25sim and helping them be in the car. The goals of this first camp with AVL are really to
00:38expose our drivers to what world class sim operation looks like. How that is a connection
00:44between the operator and the driver and the analysis and understanding how that usage
00:50of planning and then using the sim and reviewing what you do to support the development as you
00:57start to go through your process of how you learn and how you develop. Difficult was probably the
01:03five of myself on the sim as in I want to push, I want to be fast, I want to just go 100% but
01:10sometimes it's faster to back off, just take it calm, take it easy and not overdrive because
01:16overdriving never lets anything good so just be calm, be you, have fun. And also just from the
01:23data analysis workshop I've learned so much about bricked terminology as well as just data analysis
01:29just basically like knowing like my minimum speed and like how much I can push out of the corner
01:34and there's many more things that I really think if I wasn't part of this I think I wouldn't have
01:38known so it's a really great learning time.
01:54My name is Michael Peinzit, I'm the department leader for race engineering at ABA Racetech so
01:59among other things we run the driving simulator which you can see in the background which we
02:03have been using today as part of the training for More Than Equal. The driving simulator is
02:09actually a great training tool, first of all when you get it wrong on the simulator it doesn't hurt
02:15as much and it's not as expensive on the real track. The other thing is obviously in the simulator we
02:20have very reproducible conditions that means lap after lap the conditions are the same, the car is
02:25the same, we can set up the system such the tire is the same every lap, the wind is the same every
02:32lap, the track grip is the same every lap, so you really see small differences in your driving in
02:37how the driver develops and that's why it's a great training tool for drivers.
02:48Obviously with More Than Equal with the limited level of experience that the young drivers bring
02:54with them, mileage is really important for them and doing that in the simulator is obviously a
02:59very good first step to prepare them for further outings on the track with the real race car and
03:03to move them ahead and bring them ahead with their driving skills with their toolbox so that they can
03:09maximise what they're doing on the racetrack. I think that this camp helps our drivers because
03:14we've always said we want them to be better adapted to coping the demands of drivers than
03:19anybody else. Our camps are very academic as well as very applied and as a consequence of that I
03:25think that what we will get from this camp is a greater understanding of how you can utilise
03:28sim now and in the future, how you can understand data and the things you should be looking at and
03:34talking to with your engineers and mechanics and finally just here and now what they're racing in
03:39karts and how they can maximise their performance.
04:09You just have to squeeze a little bit and it's tight enough.
