A recent United Nations report alleges that Israeli strikes on and near hospitals in the Gaza Strip have pushed healthcare in the Palestinian territory to the brink of collapse.

The 23-page report, titled “Attacks on hospitals during the escalation of hostilities in Gaza,” covers the period from October 7, 2023, to June 30, 2024.

According to the report, there were at least 136 strikes on 27 hospitals and 12 other medical facilities, resulting in significant casualties among doctors, nurses, medics, and civilians.

The attacks caused extensive damage, often destroying vital civilian infrastructure.

Israel maintains that hospitals have been extensively used by terror groups operating in and around these facilities, sometimes launching attacks from within them.

Israel has repeatedly published documentation of what it says are terrorists in hospitals and even shown hostages being hidden in medical facilities.
Israel argues that hospitals lose their protected status under international law when they are used by armed operatives as military sites or for planning and launching attacks. It also claims to take extensive measures to protect civilians in hospitals and ensure their safe evacuation.

Despite Israel’s claims, the UN report found these assertions regarding Gaza hospitals being used for military purposes by Palestinian groups to be “vague.”

00:00Yes, what Israel is saying is that the United Nations is perhaps, they're looking at one
00:06side of the equation, meaning Israel attacking or raiding hospitals.
00:12That on paper may be true, but what Israel is claiming is that these hospitals are used
00:16for anything but medical attention.
00:19Israeli officials are saying that these hospitals are militant centers, and the latest example
00:25could be the Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip.
00:28According to the Israeli army, 500 people were present at the hospital when the raid
00:34took place.
00:35240 of these 500, meaning nearly half the people in the hospital, were arrested for
00:43being involved in activities of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad.
00:46This, according to Israel, is the modus operandi of the militant organizations in the Gaza
00:51Strip using hospitals such as Kamal Adwan in the northern Gaza Strip.
00:57Formerly, previously, another raid last year, a big raid taking place at the Shifa Hospital
01:03in the city of Gaza, which was the biggest hospital in the Gaza Strip.
01:08Israeli officials are stressing time and time again that these places are actually used
01:14as headquarters by militant organizations, and what Israel is saying about these reports
01:19is that the United Nations is completely ignoring that side of the reality.
01:26The UN is also only looking at one side, the raids at the hospitals, but not looking
01:30at the other one, the fact that these hospitals are used as headquarters for militants.
