Authorities entered impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's compound on Friday (Jan 3), but failed to execute an unprecedented arrest warrant after they were confronted with presidential security forces inside.

00:00South Korean authorities failed to carry out an arrest warrant for impeached
00:06President Yoon Suk-yol Friday.
00:08For several hours a dramatic standoff unfolded at Yoon's compound.
00:13Investigators led by the CIO
00:17or Corruption Investigation Office for high-ranking officials
00:20confronted members of the Presidential Security Service
00:23and soldiers who were seconded to them. By 1.30 p.m.
00:28the CIO called off the effort to arrest Yoon
00:31as it was concerned about the safety of its personnel. In a statement they said
00:35it was judged that it was virtually impossible to execute the arrest warrant
00:40due to the ongoing standoff and the office
00:44deeply regretted Yoon's attitude of non-compliance.
00:47Local media say the chief and vice chief of the Presidential Security Service
00:52are under investigation for obstruction of justice.
00:56Yoon has been under investigation for insurrection over his declaration of
01:00martial law last month.
01:02The current arrest warrant is valid until January 6th
01:06and gives investigators only 48 hours to hold Yoon
01:09after he is arrested. They must then decide whether to request a detention
01:13warrant
01:14or release him. Separate from the criminal investigation
01:18Yoon's impeachment case is currently before the Constitutional Court
01:21to decide whether to reinstate or permanently remove him.
