00:00Good afternoon, Sheffield. It's Alistair from the Sheffield Star. I'm coming to you with
00:03a little weather update for January the 4th and 5th of 2025, and I'm afraid it's not looking
00:08very good in Sheffield. The Met Office and the UK Health Security Agency, or UCHA, has
00:15issued an amber weather warning for snow and ice in Sheffield coming this weekend. We've
00:21been talking about the snow that's due to come already, but I'm afraid this has been
00:24upgraded from a yellow weather warning up to an amber one, meaning that the chance of
00:28disruption is very high and likely, but the impact itself will be quite medium, they're
00:33saying, less than a red amber alert, which has got a threat to life, for example. But
00:36yeah, we can expect rather widespread disruption and a lot of problems in Sheffield this weekend
00:41due to some very heavy snow that is likely on the way. Here's what we need to know. Aside
00:45from some plummeting temperatures going down to around the 1 and 0 degree area, the snow
00:50is likely to arrive on Saturday evening from around 9pm. Previously it was thought just
00:55to arrive overnight in the Sunday, but there's now been pushed back to arriving at around
01:009pm on Saturday instead. And that's likely to last for well over 15 hours, basically.
01:06They're predicting to last until around noon on the Sunday, at which point it's not even
01:11due to end, it's more like that's when some heavy rain is expected to arrive and mix in
01:14with it. So really quite terrible weather come Sunday, certainly when we wake up. Now
01:20the chance of that actually settling is very unpredictable right now. While it's likely
01:24to settle on the Saturday night and going into Sunday morning, the snow that's due to
01:30arrive on the Sunday is likely to cause some problems about whether it will settle or not.
01:34It's very deep snow in the meantime though. Areas above 300 metres, such as above sea
01:40level at the Highstones area of Derbyshire I can think of, very rural, well they've been
01:45told to expect upwards of 40cm of snow, which would easily leave them quite cut off and
01:51isolated at that point. Lower lying areas like city centre can expect up to 7cm of snow,
01:57so between snowdrifts and variations like that it's going to be quite chaotic in Sheffield
02:02this weekend. We're putting up some advice about what to do in these situations on the
02:07Star now. There's wide-ranging advice about what to do to look after your neighbours and
02:12whether you should be driving in these sort of conditions, but we can expect some pretty
02:15widespread disruption in Sheffield this weekend. No more than that, we hope to bring you more
02:23updates as it happens. We'll be able to share pictures and more advice as it happens over
02:26the weekend, but yeah it's going to be quite a disruptive one in Sheffield this weekend,
02:29so please look after yourselves and think of your neighbours, think of the vulnerable people
02:33in the area that you can check in on and we'll bring you the latest as it happens.
