00:00As if the week hasn't been hard enough, today saw the start of the marathon.
00:20Stage four from Al-Henakia to Al-Ula, and stage five from Al-Ula to Ha'il.
00:25A 48-hour test, just like the Krono, with three main differences.
00:29The marathon is two specials, whereas the Krono was just one, with set distances each
00:33day and only one overnight bivouac.
00:36And riders have a limited time to work on their bikes before they're locked in what's
00:39called parc fermé, that's the bikes, not the riders.
00:42No mechanical assistance, but they can help one another.
00:48And it was cold this morning at the start.
00:51What are you dreaming of now?
00:55A warm bed.
00:57Like your body feels warm, but then your face gets so cold and your hands, it's brutal.
01:09The testing nature of the marathon was clear today as three of the big favourites, Brabeck,
01:13Branch and Hals, made a potentially catastrophic navigation error in the final 20k.
01:18Gloomy faces at the finish.
01:20Definitely not the best day of the week.
01:22I opened almost all day.
01:24I'm really happy with my riding and I'm happy with my navigation.
01:28But yeah, like 15km back, man, we made a big mistake and that definitely killed us.
01:36One moment we were doing such a good job and all three of us were opening so well and the
01:40next moment we're way out of contention.
01:43We just didn't get in the right canyon and we had to go all the way back and recalibrate
01:47and try it again to get it the good way because we ended up losing like 15 minutes there.
01:54So it was a total bummer.
01:56If you want to win the Dakar, I suggest you never to open.
02:00No such issues for informed Daniel Sanders who made it four wins from five, a first since
02:05Petter Hansen in 97 and extended his lead.
02:09It's good when you can just focus on what you're doing and not looking at other lines
02:13and making sure because you're 100% focused on the road book and then, yeah, I'm sure
02:18they'll be following the lines a little bit, but hopefully no mistakes and no big ones.
02:22Pushing our leader all the way today, Honda's Tosca Scharena, although he actually stopped
02:26for a few minutes at the end so he wouldn't have to open tomorrow.
02:29Cat and mouse stuff this.
02:31After the refueling, I catch Daniel and we were riding together until the end and yeah,
02:39at the end I tried to stay calm, to try to don't open tomorrow and I think I did it.
02:44An impressive showing too from Hero's Nacho Cornejo, the Chilean got his bike setting
02:49spot on, powering to third, around eight minutes down on the top two.
02:53This morning, the Aussie Sanders had some close neighbours in the top three, but now
02:57he's home and away the best with the gap increasing to 13 minutes and 26 over Tosca.
03:02All five Hondas are in the top seven.
03:08The second division in the motos, Rallye 2, is still led by Breakthrough Biker of
03:12the Year, Edgar Canet, but his overall advantage has dropped to just three minutes 24, thanks
03:17to a stage triumph today for his main rival, Tobias Ebster.
03:21The Austrian enjoys the atmosphere of a marathon stage.
03:24Yeah, now we have to set up the tent and it's almost the same as last year in Marimoto.
03:31I'm feeling like home right now.
03:3530 minutes in Rallye GP, an hour in Rallye 2, the riders had time for a few basic repairs
03:40before their bikes were locked up for the night.
03:42The marathon continues tomorrow.
03:51Yesterday, it was Carlos's Ford Raptor and this morning, Sed Lueb's Dacia joined Sainz
03:57on the withdrawals list.
04:01That leaves just Nasa of the big three still in the race.
04:09Previous winners Nani Roma and Gini de Villiers remain, but Nani is 61 hours behind and it's
04:1616 years since Gini's victory.
04:31Not for the first time, Seb has got the hump and his Dakar dream has died for a ninth time.
04:43With rain forecasts, best get these wipers clean, but it was cold at the start and there
04:47would be wind and heat to come.
04:50Leading out in the cars for a first time after his maiden victory, 19-year-old Saud Variawa.
04:56Repeating yesterday's feat was always going to be a struggle and the South African finished
05:00down in 27th today.
05:08He was soon caught this morning by Gerlain Chichouli, who started next, but the Frenchman
05:13and Alex Winoch were way off the pace, 21st and 35 minutes down.
05:18No matter how hard the X-Ray Mini flapped its wings, they couldn't fly away from Variawa
05:23until 200k into the stage.
05:33Focus and confidence from Nasser Al-Attiyah at the start line with his rivals dropping
05:37like flies.
05:38And soon it was double dacha as Cristina Gutierrez joined them on the course.
05:45As a driver, it does pay to have breakdown cover and Gutierrez and Pablo Moreno must
05:53feel like they're providing roadside assistance this year.
05:56Today the fourth day in a row they've stopped to help teammates.
06:00Nasser and the rest of the sand riders owe them at least a basket of muffins.
06:05Eventually they got going again, but Al-Attiyah lost 33 minutes today on the stage winner.
06:12Unlike Juan Cruz Iacopini, of whom we haven't seen much this year, 7th in 2023, but third
06:18place today means he's 8th overall, 40 minutes off the lead.
06:33I told you those wipers would come in handy, hashtag POV.
06:36I love these onboard shots.
06:41So let's get some more as well, this time with Toby and Sam.
06:45But Sunderprice have had a terrible day.
06:47At the time of recording, they still haven't made it to the Marathon Bivouac in their Toyota
06:51Hilux.
06:52But another Toyota, that of Lucas Moraes, is lying 5th overall.
06:56Today was tricky though for the Gazoo Racing Brazilian.
06:59We tried to carry a good, you know, good rhythm, we're not going crazy to not get punctured,
07:05but suddenly, one puncture, then second puncture, then third puncture, I said, how?
07:13Yet another consistent run from Henk Lattegen, and yet another Toyota.
07:18He and Brett Cummings hadn't got out of the car once, until today.
07:21A bit of stress, because we had one puncture with about 80km to go, and then another one
07:2610km later.
07:27Lattegen's overall lead was cut though, as Yazeed Al-Raji tasted victory for the first
07:32time in 2025.
07:33Toyota Hilux is locked out the Stage 4 podium, and there's definitely something to be said
07:38for reliability, especially at the Dakar.
07:41Finally, we are here, we closed the gap in the top, OK, we opened the stage, but we can
07:47do it well tomorrow in the sand, and I hope everything will go well.
07:54Can Nasser take a 6th title and edge to within two of Peder Hansel, or will we have a new
07:58name on the Bedouin trophy?
08:06So much dust this year, has anyone got one of those little, you know those like cloth
08:10things on the end of a long stick?
08:11Do you know the thing I'm in that's under the sink?
08:13Oh yeah, brilliant, thanks mate.
08:18So far, this year's Dakar is a walk in the park for 2019's quad champion Nicolas Cavigliasso.
08:24That is, if your walk in the park involves high speeds, four wheels, rocks and punctures.
08:28Taurus occupy the top 7 places in the T3s, Cavigliasso said before the Dakar that he
08:34and his wife Valentina would win it.
08:36For now, only Leverton and Guerriero are within half an hour.
08:41A second Dakar win for Sarah Price in the SSVs.
08:44The American is out of contention for the overall, but this will sweeten that bitter
08:47pill she had to swallow on the Crono.
08:51Overall, it was looking so smooth for Frenchman Xavier de Sautre.
08:55He had just had the small matter of rookie Brock Hegger to keep an eye on, but the Californian's
08:59third place today and the defending champion losing an hour and three quarters, Hegger
09:03is out in front overall.
09:11I'm going home.
09:14In the trucks, Mitchel van den Brink continues to close the gap on the overall podium, the
09:19young Dutchman second quickest on stage four, but the day belonged to Martin Matic.
09:24Not only did he win and extend his lead to over 45 minutes, his team actually built the
09:29three trucks that finished 1-2-3 on the stage.
09:32Chapeau.
09:33So, the specials on the Dakar 47 Marathon at Meunier du Jour are a starter of 415k
09:44through volcanic landscapes, which came with a side of canyons.
09:46That was delicious.
09:47For your next course, a 428k medley of fast tracks, deep sand and stony ground.
09:54The desert dessert is, of course, a well-deserved rest day on Friday.
09:57Catch you tomorrow, rally fans.
