00:00Arctic chills are taking Lafayette by storm.
00:03We can bundle up easily as humans,
00:05but how can we keep our beloved pets
00:07from the dangers of the winter chill?
00:08Star City talked with assistant manager,
00:11Regina Jones at Pet Supplies Plus,
00:13for tips on how to keep our fuzzy, furry friends warm.
00:16Mainly shelter.
00:18You know, if they don't come inside,
00:20make sure that they have like a nice place
00:22to get in out of the element.
00:24If you need to walk your animals,
00:26keeping their feet protected is extremely crucial.
00:29It is important that they get booties for their pets
00:34because some of the salt can actually burn their paws,
00:37their pads.
00:38Jones mentioned an important way
00:40to keep your loved one from freezing
00:41is keeping them protected in a covering of sorts.
00:44The wind chills will definitely affect them as well.
00:47That's why, you know, they've got to have
00:49some kind of shelter with like windbreaks.
00:51Unless necessary, Jones recommends keeping your pets in
00:55when it's below freezing.
00:56Their water will not stay liquid.
01:00Their water is gonna freeze,
01:02so they won't have access to water if they're outside.
01:06Their stores do carry the heated water bowls
01:09to keep the water from freezing.
01:12And if you see your pet shaking uncontrollably,
01:14that could be a sign for hypothermia.
01:16It's mainly, you know, just restrict being outside
01:21as much as possible.
01:23Keep an eye on your pets and stay warm.
