00:00Meanwhile, we have a writer with us this morning who is a true inspiration for many.
00:06But before that, let's watch this first.
00:10In the world of Filipino poetry,
00:12the impact of poems with a deep connection to their emotional experiences cannot be ignored.
00:18One of the names that continues to draw new viewers to the field of poetry
00:23is Mariang Sinukuan.
00:25In her works, she is full of emotions.
00:28She shows the importance of writing as a way to express herself,
00:34especially when it comes to sad or happy emotions.
00:37In every poem and book,
00:39she gives us an opportunity to be a part of her journey,
00:44from defeat and tears,
00:46to acceptance and healing.
00:48The name that she uses, Mariang Sinukuan,
00:52has meaning and connection to the history of the Philippines.
00:55Because Mariang Sinukuan is well-known in Philippine mythology
00:59as a symbol of hope and protection.
01:03That's why we now know the author of Mariang Sinukuan here in She Shines.
01:12And now, we will talk to Mariang Sinukuan.
01:16Good morning and welcome here in Rise and Shine Philippines.
01:21Good morning.
01:22Good morning to Dianne and Mejito.
01:24Alright, first of all, we are curious.
01:27Can you give us a little background on how you chose the name Mariang Sinukuan?
01:35Actually, I always receive that question
01:39because people think that
01:43of course, Mariang Sinukuan is Sinukuan.
01:46They always say, are you Sinukuan?
01:48But no, I got the name Mariang Sinukuan
01:52from the enchantress, Mariang Sinukuan,
01:56from Pangpanga, Magalang, Pangpanga.
02:00At that time, I was looking for a novel to write.
02:05My options were,
02:08our enchantress,
02:10which is Maria Kakao,
02:12Maria Makiling,
02:14that's Mariang Sinukuan.
02:16And the most catchy one,
02:18since you are a writer,
02:20is Mariang Sinukuan.
02:22That's why I chose it.
02:24Can you tell us
02:26how your passion for writing started?
02:29What pushed you to write novels?
02:35I started writing novels.
02:39Actually, I was still in 9th grade, junior high.
02:42But I wasn't really into writing.
02:46Actually, poetry wasn't the first writing field I tried.
02:51I was more into essay, narrative.
02:54And actually, looking back,
02:56I didn't really know how I was shifted
02:59to the path of poetry.
03:01Until the pandemic came,
03:04of course, everyone was bored.
03:06I thought, okay, let's try poetry
03:11because it's not around me.
03:13I also noticed that
03:15no one writes poetry like that.
03:17So, when people look at you,
03:20you really stand out.
03:22Because, you know,
03:24there's no such thing as poetry.
03:26They think that poetry
03:28always has a rhyme,
03:31always has a rhyme scheme.
03:33Which is eventually,
03:35in my journey of writing,
03:37I gradually calculated that
03:40it's okay even if the poem doesn't rhyme.
03:44Well, in your books,
03:46you can see a deep connection to emotions
03:48and personal stories.
03:49Can you share with us
03:51what was your inspiration
03:52in writing your poems and stories,
03:54especially in your latest book?
03:58Yes.
03:59So, in my book,
04:02Sa Parati At Palagi,
04:04actually, it's a compilation of
04:07what I wrote in 2021 until 2022.
04:14So, I divided it into two parts,
04:17which is Parati At Palagi.
04:20And my writing process at that time
04:23was a bit drastic
04:26because half of it came from the past
04:30and the other half came from the present.
04:34So, I made it into a part
04:38where there should be a focal point
04:41where the two parts come together.
04:43And in that process,
04:45since the people around me
04:48already knew that I was writing,
04:51there was a bit of pressure.
04:55And that pressure helped me
05:00because I think
05:02I was able to push myself
05:04and my book
05:06that it's not just about
05:09what other people expect,
05:11but it's also about what is really
05:14in Parati At Palagi.
05:15The expectations of the people
05:17and the unexpected
05:19are already out there.
05:20Yes.
05:21I saw the cover.
05:22The design of your cover is beautiful.
05:26Congratulations for that.
05:28And also, your process of writing
05:30your recent book, Parati At Palagi,
05:32lasted for 8 months.
05:35What was the hardest part
05:37while you were doing this?
05:41Actually,
05:42the hardest part was the financial part
05:47because when I wrote that,
05:49I was still a student.
05:51I was in the 12th grade.
05:53I didn't have any other source of income
05:56but I was broke.
05:59I had to save up.
06:01Think about it,
06:02for 8 months,
06:03I was like,
06:04I asked myself,
06:05okay, I'm not going to spend that much
06:07because I needed to have
06:10a timetable.
06:13Like, I needed this.
06:15I was able to save up
06:17because I was going to pay for the printer.
06:19I was self-published.
06:21There was nothing I could do.
06:23So, that was the hard part.
06:26Then, the designs.
06:28There was nothing I could do
06:30with just a book.
06:32Even when I searched online,
06:35I was like,
06:36how do I do this?
06:37How do I do that?
06:38I just risked it.
06:40Okay, let's do this.
06:42Thankfully,
06:43my friends helped me.
06:46The people who made the book cover,
06:50spine, and back cover of my book
06:53was my best friend,
06:55Tia.
06:56She made the bookmarks.
06:59I'm very thankful to her
07:01because we were both students.
07:04So, we just tried and experimented
07:08with my friends.
07:10At that time,
07:12I don't have a laptop.
07:15I have a friend, Hiro.
07:18I just use his laptop
07:20when I do the manuscript.
07:23We even do a video call.
07:25He'll share his screen with me.
07:27Then, I'll tell him to adjust it.
07:30Because it doesn't work anymore.
07:33It doesn't work anymore.
07:36The app I use doesn't work anymore
07:40for the manuscript.
07:43So, I need to...
07:45It's a hassle.
07:47So, when I see the book,
07:52it's okay.
07:53That's how hard it is.
07:55That's how drastic it is.
07:57But it's worth it.
07:59Thankfully,
08:00my batches are still ongoing.
08:04Wow.
08:05For that, congratulations.
08:06Your story is really inspiring.
08:09You didn't give up.
08:11And of course,
08:12your friends helped you
08:13and also your support system.
08:15Of course,
08:16for those who want to buy a book,
08:18how can they get it?
08:20How can they connect with you?
08:23Yes.
08:24For those who want to pre-order,
08:27it's still available.
08:29You can check it on my Instagram.
08:33It's posted there.
08:35It's a pre-order form.
08:37You just need to fill out the form.
08:40And then,
08:41you just need to wait for the printing process.
08:43And then,
08:44I'll reach out to you
08:46on how to send it to you.
08:49Wow.
08:50She already published a book in grade 12.
08:52That's great.
08:53That's funny.
08:54Congratulations again.
08:55And may you serve as an inspiration
08:57to those who want to be an author
08:59and publish their books.
09:01Thank you so much
09:02for sharing your inspiring story
09:03here on She Shines.
09:04I'm your writer,
09:05Mari Ang Sinukuan.
09:06Thank you very much.
