Govt eyes maximum suggested retail price of imported rice at P58/kilo
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. says the maximum suggested retail price of P58 per kilogram of imported rice will be implemented in Metro Manila on Jan. 20 to prevent profiteering, in an interview on the sidelines of his market inspections with Trade Secretary Cristina Roque at the Murphy Market in Quezon City on Jan. 10, 2025. He is also confident that retailers and importers will cooperate with the government in its efforts to tame spiking rice retail prices. A price ceiling, however, may be recommended to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. if retail prices of imported rice remain high despite the set MSRP.

00:00Q. Is the PKI Peso true?
00:03A. Yes. We will be talking to the supermarkets and convenience stores that sell rice until next week with the Secretary of the DPI.
00:13We will tell them that we need their full cooperation to make it available for imported rice only.
00:21I think everybody wants to help the consumers without affecting the farmers. I'm confident that it will happen.
00:36You know the supermarkets like the one we visited with Secretary Ron Quintero. I was watching her monitor all the prices here.
00:47Based on what the manufacturers are saying, they are following it. If they won't follow it, if there's a situation where the DPI and DA will be forced to really control the sanctions, we will have to set price ceilings.
01:09We cannot set it. We will recommend to the President price ceilings. The President will declare the price ceilings.
01:18The basic necessity, if the price ceilings are not followed, it is a violation of the law.
