00:00Taking us up north, families in the barangay in Calinga continue to practice bladesmithing,
00:05which is not just a source of their livelihood, but also a treasured family tradition.
00:10Philippine Information Agency Cordillera Rod Asurin has the details.
00:16Bladesmithing is challenging, from heating up the hard metal, hammering it into shape,
00:21tempering the blade, and more processes until a beautiful, durable blade is created.
00:26The process may be lengthy, but bladesmithing has been a source of livelihood of two families
00:31from Barangay Uma in Luguagan, Calinga.
00:34But more than a livelihood, this is a treasured family tradition that families Basingat and
00:38Balangay continue to practice.
00:41Both families have settled in Tapuk City for better market access for their products.
00:58They are now making various designs, integrating the intricate Calinga designs into their sheets,
01:23handles and stands.
01:35Aside from their practical use in the kitchen or in the field, locals and tourists buy these
01:39handcrafted products as souvenirs or for display.
01:43More than their aesthetic value, these tools symbolize their ancestral legacy in bladesmithing
01:48and the rich cultural heritage of Calinga.
01:51From the PIA Cordillera, Rod Azurin, Balitang Pambansa.
