00:00We're hooking up with our main man, Terry Bowden, the legendary coach is from the Bowden Blitz,
00:05of course, and he's also on Coast to Coast regularly with us with a great career in
00:11college football, second to none. And we love talking football with him. And we're going to
00:16go back and look at this Notre Dame and Ohio State, what's pending the national championship
00:22and how it came to fruition with Texas losing to Ohio State. You and I were just talking about
00:29how they butchered that ball at the one, first and goal from the one, first and one,
00:34and they run sideways and they fumble and butcher the whole thing. And meanwhile,
00:40across the front, they got six, five, 350 average on that front line. Like,
00:46how soft are you? You can't push them one yard. Yeah, there's no doubt. Texas has to,
00:53they're Texas, that's a Texas long. I don't care if it is Ohio State, you ought to be able to pound
00:57it four times and get a yard. Don't take a loss. Don't allow penetration. Don't allow the edge
01:03until you're running back to get your head in a crack and push a crack. And you're going to,
01:07and you're going to get one yard and four downs, but don't go sideways. You lose seven. Now you
01:12got to throw it on third and seven, throw it on fourth and seven. It basically was a call that I
01:18don't understand. I don't have their game plan. I don't have what they thought they saw, but they've
01:23got so much speed and you're going sideways. It probably, it cost them a chance to tie the game,
01:28probably a chance to go in overtime with a chance to win. I mean, it was a, they were,
01:33they were going to tie the game and instead, instead they fumble. He goes 83 yards hizzy
01:42and now you lose by 14 and then all the betters are screwed, but they wouldn't have covered anyway.
01:48They wouldn't have covered anyway. They were down seven. They might have, but when they fumbled,
01:53the cover was over. Yeah. And you got me. It's only two plays. They have a 75 yard screen,
02:00which I think Texas did a poor job, 13 seconds left in the half. And they played, they rushed
02:05people hard and they played their secondary way back. And it's a pure screen situation.
02:11That's where people screen with 75 yards, one play touchdown. And then the scoop and score was
02:16another touchdown. That's 14 points. The difference in the game on two big plays,
02:22and really two of the three could have been prevented.
02:25So let me ask you a couple of questions about Texas. If you were coaching Texas, honestly,
02:33would you have played Arch Manning more than this guy Ewers? The way he was loyal to that Ewers guy,
02:41it baffled me because I think I frankly, without a doubt, I think Arch Manning is better
02:46and he's going to have a gigantic career in the NFL. And I do not believe Quinn Ewers will.
02:52Yeah. You know, I will say in my mind, that's, there's still a good argument either way,
02:57depending on what they see every day in practice, but they needed a spark. Remember when Arch
03:01Manning went in one play, made a, made a critical first down on a run, would have easily been the
03:07spark. So I can't put myself in their shoes in regards to how good he's been practicing all
03:13week and the difference in those two. But to me, he would have been, they could bring him in at the
03:17end. Not only do they have a chance to win the game, because I think he plays as well or better
03:21than your Quinn Ewers most of the time. And so that would have, to me, that gave them a chance
03:26not only to get the win, but also to lift it for the future. But I will say this, I don't watch
03:34practice every day and how close that is in getting the game plan. But Arch is, he knows,
03:39he knows football pretty good. I mean, honestly, every time he played, he lit it up and I, he's just,
03:46he's better. So there's a, I have to ask you this. Yeah. So I thought the best game of the entire
03:54college football playoff was the Arizona state, Texas game. And I gotta be honest with you.
03:59They blew that fourth and 13. Otherwise they win the game and they're playing in that game against
04:05Ohio state. Did you agree that that was the best game? And what did you think of how they pulled
04:12that out with that double overtime touchdown and two point conversion after they had scored
04:17on the fourth and 13? Yeah. I mean, to me, that was probably the most exciting game in regard to,
04:24nobody gave Arizona state a chance and they did an incredible job. And so, so that was a great,
04:30great game by them. Uh, and I couldn't believe the way they came back to, to win an overtime.
04:37Do you think Scott will be a good pro Kali? You know what? I think so. Every time you watch him,
04:44he produces, he runs, he runs, he's tough. He can run against anybody and he catches a ton of passes.
04:51Those are touchdown pass, but he's a great versatile back. And I think he's got a, I think
04:55he's got a great future because he's very tough, very physical, and he can run, catch, uh,
05:01and throw a halfback pass. So no, I think he has a bright future just because he's a, uh, a guy that
05:06can go through the trenches and go through the toughness, uh, not look that pretty all the time,
05:10but he's always productive. When you were at Auburn, did you ever obsess over Alabama the way
05:21day obsesses over Michigan? Meanwhile, he's going to play for a national championship,
05:27but he's still worried about losing to Michigan. Well, I will, I will say this,
05:31his fans help him a little bit. They, you know, I've, I've, I've coached against Michigan and
05:35Texas. I mean, up there, you know, you either got to win a beat Michigan or play for a national
05:40championship and he's all in four against Michigan. So whether he can block that out,
05:45the fans are not going to let him. Now, right now he's got that blocked out because he's playing for
05:49the national championship. But I, but I will say this, he needs to not worry about it as much. And
05:54he may be, but the fans are not going to let that still that that's I coached in Ohio long enough.
06:00When I was at Akron, I watched Ohio state and their fans every day. Uh, but he's got to block
06:06that out. You know, he's going to block that out, uh, because he's had, he's had better football
06:10team, but you can't obsess over it. You got too many other games. And that's why if he could win
06:15this championship there, there it's going to, it's going to quiet them down, but come Michigan
06:20game next week, it's going to be, it's going to be, you better not lose five in a row. You know,
06:24that's just, that's just that game. And the importance that's the way it was in Alabama.
06:29I was told when I got to Auburn and say, you could be the Auburn head coach, but you're not an Auburn
06:33man. Do you beat Alabama? Yeah. Do you think that, um, Ohio state that giant spread that they're
06:42going to, I mean, that spread indicates that people think they're going to beat Notre Dame
06:46easily. Yeah. I mean, I, it may come down, but I just a little too much spread for me. I just,
06:52in my mind, Notre Dame is kind of a, a crowd favorite right now. They, they have chemistry.
06:57They don't have as much talent as Ohio state, but they've got great chemistry as a team.
07:03Uh, their coach has great rapport with the team. They respond to him. He's young and probably,
07:08I don't want to say naive, but he kind of handles everything. Uh, uh, not nonchalantly,
07:14but just in life, I just think that it's been a great story. Uh, they find a way to win. Uh,
07:20I think they've got it. That's how good they are. But again, Ohio state talent wise,
07:25almost every position, uh, they're going to have to lose that ball game. I don't think Notre Dame
07:29can go out and win. I think they're, I think Ohio state will have to lose that game. Do you believe
07:35that, um, Brian Kelly, it drives him nuts that he left Notre Dame never won the big game and that
07:44he's losing in Baton Rouge and he's never done anything there. And this guy's been there three
07:49years and he's playing for a national championship. I bet it drives him nuts. It's got to get it. It
07:54does. And it plays on his head too. Cause I don't care what you say. And I've talked to plenty of
07:58coaches down here, handle the situation differently this year in LSU. You could see the pressure.
08:04He's arguing with players on the sideline during a game. His post game press conferences are really,
08:11uh, off the board. They're really loud and try to get on people. He's just handling it differently.
08:17Uh, and then you throw on the fact that Notre Dame hasn't the year have there, uh, but money
08:23might've been there. Sometimes you have to move on to keep your career going. Don't stay too long
08:28at any one place. And all those factors may have factored into it. I don't believe he would have
08:33been fired at Notre Dame. He was, he was in the BCS title games. He was in the, you know,
08:38he was always in the final four. He, he, you know, he did his thing. I don't think they were
08:43going to fire him. I think he thought he could go win the sec and a national championship.
08:48It was a better place to win the national championship. He convinced himself. You couldn't,
08:51you couldn't quite win it there for whatever reason. I don't think he was going to be fired
08:54either. And I, I think they gave him a lifestyle, the salary, you know, too. So there was some
08:59enticement, but I do believe he felt the way it's being played the last five years,
09:04you have to be in the sec to play for a chance. And buddy sec didn't have a good show at this
09:10year. It's about the Northern football because they're taking all the good players.
