Taylor Fritz enjoyed a brilliant year in 2024, breaking the Top 5 for the first time and reaching his maiden Grand Slam final at the US Open.
And in the latest episode of Eye of the Coach, Patrick Mouratoglou puts the progress in his game down to the American’s observation of the two best players in the world – Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
“He’s dropshotting, which is something he was never doing before; he’s coming more to the net,” says Mouratoglou.
“He sees that the best players in the world, which are Alcaraz and Sinner, are so complete – I think Alcaraz is by far the most complete, then Sinner, and Sinner is also working to add new things to his game – he sees that’s where it is.
“Where you find your best level is by having so many options that you have an answer to all the questions asked by the opponent, all the problems caused by the opponent. Also you can cause all types of problems for your opponent because you have many options.”

00:00Why Teller-Fritz is top 5?
00:02The difference between the Teller-Fritz of before
00:04and the new Teller-Fritz is the fact that he has more options
00:07and a much better backhand than before.
00:13The big, big difference is his backhand.
00:14His backhand before was too predictable.
00:17He would play 90% cross-court,
00:19looking to turn around his backhand and hit forehands.
00:21He was not great at playing down the line.
00:23I think he gained a lot of confidence in his backhand.
00:25Now he's moving the ball around with his backhand extremely well too.
00:28Of course, his weapon remains his forehand.
00:30I think he does much more with his backhand,
00:31which opens a world of possibilities for him.
00:34He had only one game planned before because of that,
00:36and I can see that he's trying to progress in every field in his game.
00:40He's drop-shotting, which is something he was never doing before.
00:43He's coming more to the net.
00:44You know, he sees that the best players in the world,
00:47which are Alcaraz and Sinner, are so complete.
00:50I think Alcaraz is by far the most complete.
00:52Sinner is also working to add new things to his game.
00:54Your best level is by having so many options
00:57that you have an answer to all the questions asked by your opponent,
01:01all the problems caused by your opponent,
01:03but also you can cause all types of problems to your opponent
01:05because you have many options.
