Jannik Sinner‘s third Grand Slam title further asserted the Italian’s place at the top of the men’s game. However, he has shared two of the last five Grand Slams with one other player – Carlos Alcaraz.
Patrick Mouratoglou believes that, although Sinner is world No 1, the Italian is not significantly above Alcaraz in terms of level.
The Frenchman says: “Jannik (Sinner) is not above everyone, I don’t think he is above Carlos (Alcaraz). When Carlos is at his best, there is a real match, and I’m sure sure who is going to win, and nobody can say who will win.”
He went on to analyse their games, and stated: “Carlos makes more unforced errors than him, he is playing with much more risk. The quality of Sinner is that he plays at a crazy high pace without missing. The asset of Carlos is that he has this incredible power in the racket, but also his ability to change rhythm.”

00:00Yannick has a mental advantage towards all the other players.
00:03They're scared of him.
00:04They know if they play him, they're going to look bad.
00:06But I don't think he wins because of that.
00:11Definitely, Siner showed the quality of his overall game
00:14and how much above the immense majority of the players he is.
00:17And also his mental quality.
00:19You know, it's one thing to win when you are an outsider.
00:22It's another one to win when you're a favorite with a lot of expectations.
00:25In his case, he's able to put everything on the side and play his best.
00:29Just to say more about his game, he really has the modern game.
00:32There is not one thing you can think,
00:34if I do that extremely well, he will be in trouble.
00:36No, because you play fast, you play slow.
00:38He has no problem.
00:39You play high, you play low.
00:40He has no problem.
00:41You play on the forehand, on the backhand, any type of ball.
00:43He has the answer.
00:44He's way above most of the players in terms of level.
00:46The only option is to beat him by playing better tennis than him.
00:49I don't think that Sasha loses this Grand Slam final
00:52because he doesn't believe enough.
00:53I think he does believe.
00:54But when it comes to the big moments, he lacks being bold,
00:57being aggressive, taking the risk, taking the match, really taking it.
01:01He pushes himself to do it, but it's not natural yet.
01:03I think he needs more time.
01:05In that match against Yannick, all the big moments, most of them,
01:08he decided to play and not miss.
01:10Yannick is not going to miss either, but Yannick is going to play faster.
01:13Every occasion you're going to play shorter, he's going to destroy you.
01:15So this is not how he can win against those guys.
01:18If the match would have lasted, I think he would have had more chances.
01:21And I think he had this in his mind.
01:23But you have to bring him there.
01:24And in order to bring him there, you have to push him.
01:26You have to punch him. You have to make him suffer.
01:29There is no other way.
01:29If you play at a rhythm that is comfortable with, nothing's going to happen.
01:32The only hole in the racket of Yannick Sinner is the fact that I don't feel
01:37that he has always been able to play five sets at a very high level,
01:41especially in that Australian Open.
01:43Yannick is not above everyone.
01:44I don't think he is above Carlos.
01:46I think when Carlos is at his best, there is a real match.
01:49And I'm not sure who's going to win.
01:50Nobody can say who's going to win.
01:51And all their matches have been extremely close, extremely uncertain.
01:55And Carlos won some big ones.
01:56They have a different type of game.
01:57Carlos is making many more unforced errors than him.
02:00He's playing with much more risk.
02:02The quality of Sinner is that he plays at a crazy high pace without missing.
02:06The asset of Carlos is that he has this incredible power in the racket,
02:11but also ability to change rhythm.
02:13He goes like at a certain pace and suddenly accelerates the pace like crazy.
02:17So the fact that Carlos is making more errors
02:19maybe makes him look less dominant in the matches against the other players.
02:23But he has so much margin. That's crazy.
02:25Look at the achievements.
02:26Both won two Grand Slams last year.
02:27And Carlos, for the moment, has one more Grand Slam than Yannick.
02:30And he's actually younger.
02:31I don't think that we can say that Yannick is way above Carlos.
02:34That's not true.
02:34For the moment, in what we've seen,
02:36there are two guys who are above anyone else.
