Council tax across the country has been going up over the last few years, and one Welsh council wants to hear from residents about proposals to increase council tax. Newport City council have said that services come at a cost and increases could be necessary.

00:00Council tax is one of the biggest outgoings for many households every month, and it seems

00:09Councils are facing massive funding gaps due to higher costs, so around Wales they're increasing
00:13tax to try and plug those holes where possible.
00:19Newport City Council have said that they may be forced to increase taxes for the following
00:22tax year, saying that they want to make residents feel safe and maintaining services comes at
00:27a cost.
00:28One way the council is trying to engage better with their residents over the increase in
00:32taxes is asking for their thoughts on a potential 6.7% increase for people around the city.
00:40They're encouraging anyone in Newport to give their thoughts as some residents could face
00:43an £89 a year increase to their current council tax band.
00:48Opposition councillors have called out plans to increase taxes while also cutting costs,
00:52with opposition leader councillor Matthew Evans saying that he's fed up of seeing payments
00:56going up.
