00:00This is Meiji for those who have travel goals this year.
00:05It's perfect because we're going to meet an inspiring Filipina today.
00:10Can you believe it?
00:12She's the first Filipina to travel to every country in the world using a Philippine passport.
00:20Wow!
00:21She's amazing!
00:22And she's with us today, Katch Medina Umandap.
00:25Katch, good morning!
00:26Good morning!
00:27Good morning and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:30Of course, Katch, we're very amazed.
00:33And congrats on your journey.
00:36You checked everything on the bucket list.
00:40Well, tell us about your journey.
00:41How did you start this?
00:43And when did you start traveling?
00:45Actually, the first time I went to the Philippines on an international flight was when I was 20 years old,
00:51when I graduated from college.
00:53And then, I realized after four years, I worked in the Middle East.
00:56I worked as an OFW in Kuwait and Iraq.
00:59And after that, I was like, okay, I have savings now.
01:02And then, I decided when I was 24 years old, 2013, to go backpacking.
01:08My six-month plan lasted until last week.
01:11So, 12 years until I accomplished the mission.
01:14Wow!
01:15In a span of 12 years, you were able to travel around the world.
01:18You're now 36 years old.
01:20I'm 36 now.
01:21You're the youngest, right?
01:22I'm the youngest.
01:23You were able to travel around the world.
01:24Yes, I say that I'm the youngest because there are two Filipino-Americans who have accomplished it.
01:29Odette Ricasa was the first one.
01:31She's a Phil-Am based in Los Angeles.
01:33And then, the second one is Tita Luisa Yu.
01:35She's a Phil-Am based in Miami.
01:37And then, I am the first one who's using a Philippine passport without other citizenship.
01:42You were with them?
01:43I was with them.
01:44We're still friends.
01:45So, did you meet them during your travel journey?
01:49Or did you talk to them first?
01:51Or did you have a group?
01:53How was that?
01:54We had a group.
01:55It's like a Guinness World Record for adventurers.
01:59So, in the whole world, only a few 500 people were able to complete it.
02:03So, Tita Luisa, Tita Odette, and me were part of this organization.
02:07Like, Nomadmania, TC's Traveler's Sensory Club, Most Traveled People.
02:11It's like an exclusive if you're aiming to do that.
02:14So, I traveled with Tita Odette.
02:16When she was finishing the countries of 2022, I helped her with the visas.
02:20And then, I traveled with Tita Luisa.
02:22She finished it at 79 years old.
02:25She accomplished it.
02:26We were together in Sri Lanka.
02:28Like, it's the same circle.
02:29So, everybody knows everyone.
02:31If that's your mission.
02:34And you know, having that organization, you know that you're safe and secured.
02:37That you have accountability people or partners while you're traveling.
02:42Because backpacking is hard, right?
02:44It's not organization, I go with them.
02:46But if you claim to have a world record, they verify you.
02:51But you do your own thing.
02:53You do your own thing.
02:54But you communicate with these people.
02:56Like, okay, who will go to Sudan?
02:59Who will go there?
03:00So, there's a community.
03:02Yes, it's a community.
03:03But not like I go with them.
03:05But they verify, like, did you go in?
03:07Did you just stay at the airport?
03:08Like, they are the ones.
03:10It's like a Guinness.
03:11What are most of your travels?
03:12Are you solo?
03:13Mostly solo.
03:14I move faster.
03:15And then, it's faster.
03:16You know, like, especially in countries that are, like, dangerous.
03:19It's better if you're quiet.
03:21You're like a chameleon.
03:23But if you go with a group, it's like too much attention, you know?
03:27You know, what Katch is doing is good.
03:29Because you know, I hear this from the elders.
03:32When you're old and you travel, it's hard.
03:35So, better start while you can, right?
03:38Yes, it's hard to carry luggage.
03:40I highly, really, I really, now that I'm back in the Philippines,
03:43I really want to motivate, like, you know, like, or educate the younger ones.
03:47Start travel muna sa Philippines hanggang minor ka.
03:49After 18, go.
03:51Okay.
03:52But you need to learn muna how you can sustain and pay for it, diba?
03:56So, now I'm curious, Katch.
03:58Sa dami-dami ng countries na napuntahan mo, ano yung mga life lessons na nabaon mo?
04:02And now you're back here in the Philippines.
04:04Life lessons, you know.
04:06Actually, she asked me earlier, what do you do?
04:09I'm a digital nomad.
04:10So, the life lesson that I'm gonna tell you is, like,
04:14if you wanna travel, like, full-time, you wanna do, like,
04:17kasi you need three things in life to travel.
04:19You need time, money, and good health.
04:21And to have it at the same time, it depends on the chapter of your life, diba?
04:26Kapag bata ka, may time ka nga, may good health, but you don't have the money.
04:29But when you're older, you have the money, you don't have the time, and this.
04:32But I am a digital nomad.
04:34So, kapag digital nomad ka, you work online.
04:37So, like, you can work anywhere you want.
04:39Like, for example, I'm earning money to write a content.
04:42Habang nasa Cebu ako, I can make the same money while writing a content.
04:46Habang nasa Kenya ako.
04:48Basta may Wi-Fi ka.
04:49May Wi-Fi, may internet.
04:51You know, like, even after COVID, diba, everyone's working from home.
04:54So, now, what I was, like, lesson is, like, learn digital skills.
04:57It's the future.
04:58So, like, if you can learn that, you can work anywhere you want.
05:01Ito, work from vacation, to.
05:04Ano ang may pinata?
05:05Ano ang may dose, eh?
05:06Heating two stones, diba?
05:08If you're traveling, tapos you're mixing also yung work, ano?
05:12Ang saya naman nganggag.
05:13Kasi kailangan natin ng show money.
05:15For the visa applications, diba?
05:17Actually, that's also what I want to ask.
05:19Hindi ka ba nahirapan sa pag-apply rin ng mga visa?
05:21Kasi yung problema rin ng mga Philippine passport holders.
05:24May limitation lang rin.
05:25So, with our Philippine passport, we can only travel to 65 countries visa-free.
05:29Like, but yung iba, mga visa on arrival, or what.
05:32Mahirap.
05:33Kasi, like, you have to have money to pay for the trip.
05:36Pero at the same time, you need to have the money to be on your bank,
05:39to show them that you can afford to do it.
05:41Hassle talaga.
05:42But I told everyone, like, sa blog, na, you know, like, if you want to do this,
05:47start first in visa-free countries.
05:49If you have enough travel history, enough confidence,
05:52then go hit na yung mga visa countries like Japan, South Korea.
05:57May strategy, so you'll not get rejected.
05:59So first, South Korea, get South Korea visa.
06:01Then, get Japan visa.
06:02Then, you get, like, Middle East visa.
06:04Then, Australia.
06:05Then, Schengen.
06:06Saka, muna target yung USA.
06:08Magparami ka muna na maestas.
06:09Ayo, pagandahin mo muna ang profile mo.
06:12Which one is your favorite?
06:13Favorite?
06:14Like, there's so many, ah.
06:16But, like, I'll consider na, if I am not a Filipino living in the Philippines,
06:20I'd live in Montenegro.
06:21And that was my second home.
06:23Okay, bakit?
06:24What's so special about it?
06:25It's similar culture sa atin.
06:27But, like, totoo lang, I had a very big car accident sa Pakistan
06:31that, like, led me to surgery.
06:33And that's not, I was not able to walk for three months in 2019.
06:38And Montenegro has a very good, like, physical therapy.
06:41Tapos, binigyan nila ako ng visa to recover.
06:44And I felt like, wow, parang pamilya.
06:46And they have the similar culture.
06:48Puti lang sila, diba?
06:51Nakakatawa naman.
06:52So now na, ayan, dami mo lang history, dami mo lang na-explore.
06:56Ano naman yung mga plano mo for the future?
06:58Now, I am back in the Philippines for a week.
07:00So, sabi nila, anong next goal mo?
07:02Diba, karang, ang hirap lang yung next goal mo?
07:04Well, if I did, ah, if I was able to visit every country in the world, like, in 12 years.
07:10Now, I want to visit every provinces in the Philippines for the next 12 years
07:15or maybe 6 years, kasi kalahata, diba?
07:17And at the same time, educate.
07:19Like, you know, like, young, like, speak in schools and college.
07:22And at the same time, travel.
07:24Kasi I really love it.
07:25Like, I don't travel for the sake of traveling.
07:27I just love it.
07:28Like, ah, the people that you meet.
07:30And now, now that I've met so many people on my travels,
07:33I've worked with a lot of tourism boards abroad.
07:35Like, I've met so many influencers, writers.
07:38Now that I am back, I want to invite them, promote my country naman.
07:41But I will host you, I will feed you fish.
07:44You know, I will show them.
07:45Like, because a lot of people hosted me in their countries.
07:47Now, I want them to come sa Philippines naman.
07:50Oh, interesting.
07:51I think, you know, it's really an opportunity.
07:53You mentioned about educating, no?
07:55Parang you can partner with probably public, private sectors.
07:59Para mas mapating.
08:00Out of school.
08:01Kasi maraming pwedeng matutunan talaga yung mga kabataan.
08:05And alam mo, gusto nating mag-travel, pero wala tayong idea.
08:08You know, the confidence and everything.
08:10I think, saka ba nila makikita Katch to follow you?
08:13Parang may mga updates, mga content mo.
08:15You'll find me online.
08:19Katch, umandap, K-A-C-H, umandap.
08:21And I have a travel blog, Two Monkeys Travel.
08:23Pero I have a company.
08:25Kaya mahirap sakin dati, kasi wala akong mapagtanungan where to get the visa.
08:29I started filipinopassport.com.
08:31So if you need help for any visa, anywhere in the world, pero tourist lang ah, we can help you.
08:36Like, we'll make it easier for the Filipinos.
08:39For the next one, so if I tag myself as the youngest, and I'm 36,
08:43imagine, mga 24 years old, 25, could do this in the next few years.
08:48Oo, 12 years lah, lahat ng country pwede.
08:50Parang tara na, Diane pwede.
08:51Kung 36 ako, by 48 pwede na.
08:53Pwede! Next goal!
08:55Oo, diba?
08:56But curious naman, kasi in the span of 12 years, like in a month, ilang ng countries yon?
09:01Depende. So like, it depends on the visa.
09:03Like usually, kapag nakapahinga ako dahil kailangan ng mga visa, kailangan natin mag-apply eh.
09:08Like, it takes one month, two months.
09:10So usually, I apply for visa two months.
09:12Kung ano lahat ng makuha ko na visa, within that two months, doon ako aalas.
09:16So for example, like last year, I traveled to 35 countries, pero in four months.
09:21Wow!
09:22Oo, kasi goal yung time na makuha.
09:25So you stayed in a country like two days?
09:27I stayed like three months sa India, before six months sa Peru.
09:32Tapos I traveled like ng Bahamas ng one month.
09:35It depends.
09:36Pero last year, lahat ng bansa, medyo complicated.
09:39Ang kailangan ko lang talaga is to get verified na I entered, I got the stamp, I got out.
09:44Ang recognition lang with Nomadmania is like, if you go 24 hours.
09:48So, that's how it is.
09:50Dapaka-inspiring naman talaga.
09:52Thank you once again sa pag-share sa amin ng inyong inspiring journey.
09:56Once again, catch Medina Umanda.
09:58Safe travels ah, and enjoy sa mga paglibot mo naman dito sa Pilipinas.
