TFL has announced it is trailing new AI software on its network to improve safety. The announcement comes just after it was revealed a man was run over by different four Jubilee-Line trains before his body was detected after stumbling onto the tracks at Stratford station.

00:00It was only after three trains that the operator of a fourth train to run over 72-year-old
00:08Brian Mitchell recognised his body laid on the track at Stratford station.
00:14Mr Mitchell fell and stumbled onto the track on the 26th of December 2023 and was struck
00:21by a terminating train five minutes later.
00:24TfL has now announced it is working on some form of experimental technology aimed at improving
00:31safety at stations.
00:32The technology is already being trialled on the DLR at Custom House station.
00:39Transport for London is already working on finding other potential locations for similar
00:44trials.
00:46The Mayor has said this technology will improve customer safety between the gap from the train
00:52and the platform edge.
00:54Sir Sadiq Khan said safety is always TfL's top priority and each injury is one too many.
01:03This isn't actually the first time AI has been tested on the Tube network.
01:06At Wilston Green station, an AI trial was used in both 2022 and 2023 in an attempt to
01:15detect fare dodging.
01:16It was also used to detect weapons being brought into the station and to find out if people
01:22were standing too close to the edge of the platform.
01:27Of course, TfL's plans come alongside, but separately, to the Prime Minister's so-called
01:34AI Opportunities Action Plan, which hopes to boost growth and deliver services more
01:41efficiently across the UK.
