00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're taking a look at 10 things we really, really want
00:14in the next mainline Mario Kart game.
00:16I know we've only seen like 5 seconds of footage, but I'm amped.
00:21Let's do this!
00:26But before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to
00:30Mojo Plays and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:35Improved Kart Customization
00:44Starting with Mario Kart 7, players were able to fully customize their karts with different
00:49bodies, wheels, and gliders.
00:51It was a welcoming addition to the franchise for both casual and hardcore players, and
00:56Mario Kart 8 bolstered this feature with even more parts than ever before.
01:09The only problem we have with it is that your stats entirely depend on only which kart body
01:15you go with.
01:16The wheels and gliders and even the character's weight class don't change much else that'll
01:22affect your playstyle.
01:24If the next Mario Kart is to continue kart customization, we would like this feature
01:28to be expanded upon or just fleshed out a bit more to where other kart parts can greatly
01:34alter your stats, not just wheels and gliders.
01:37Maybe take a page from Mario Party 5's Super Duel mode and have us pick from different
01:42engines and special weapons as well?
01:52A Better Replay System
02:01All kinds of crazy things can happen in a single race.
02:05Problem with Mario Kart 8 is that it doesn't always recognize these moments and will instead
02:10show highlights of a more mundane moment.
02:22For the next Mario Kart, we would love to see Nintendo put the camera in the players
02:26hands.
02:28Instead of a pre-made highlight reel, why not record the entire race or Grand Prix instead?
02:34Give players the ability to scrub through the race and make our own awesome reels.
02:39With this kind of a feature, you can guarantee that there will be countless clips to find
02:43that are both hilarious and wild from other people's races.
02:54Different Perspectives
03:03This is a small thing, but it's something we would still like to see, and it's different
03:07camera angles.
03:08Ever since Mario Kart 64 in 1997, the series has only given us a couple of camera angles,
03:14but only the necessary rear view and zoom out features.
03:18What about, say, a first person mode?
03:28We know that Mario Kart has never been about immersion like other racing games try to achieve.
03:33However, we did get close to that viewpoint with the augmented reality game Mario Kart
03:38Live Home Circuit, and it was kinda neat.
03:40Even if we can't get the camera set at the very front of the kart to feel that sense
03:44of speed, could we maybe just get one that sits on the hood of the kart?
03:58More Meaningful Roster Picks
04:09Don't get us wrong, we love Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but there is one glaring issue regarding
04:14the roster.
04:16Well, seven glaring issues, in fact.
04:19Why do we have Mario, Metal Mario, Tanooki Mario, Peach, Pink Gold Peach, Cat Peach,
04:28and Peachette?
04:29What is the point in all this?
04:37We know the other variants of Mario and Peach have their own stats, but why not give those
04:42stats to completely new characters then?
04:46Different characters, characters that may not have been in a Mario Kart game before.
04:50All of these variants could have just been costumes, y'know?
04:54We know a similar case could be made against Bowser in Dry Bowser, although the case with
04:59Mario and Peach was just way, way too egregious.
05:04Please Nintendo, don't pull this again with the new game, please.
05:14Less Tours and More Tracks
05:28Another gripe we had with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was the booster course DLC.
05:33Now, we were super happy overall with the tracks that were included, specifically the
05:37remakes of older tracks and even the few original courses we got like Merry Mountain and Yoshi's
05:44However, every single cup had at least one course from Mario Kart Tour, the mobile spin-off
05:50game that fans weren't super crazy about with its monetization and course selection.
05:54One cup in particular had TWO Tour courses on it.
06:06We know why these courses were included too.
06:09It was most likely a cheaper way to give us more content without having to go and redesign
06:14older courses.
06:16Recycle over remake.
06:18If that truly was the case, then fine, but let's not get carried away with the Tour
06:23representation in the next game when there are still plenty of courses from Mario Kart
06:28Wii, Mario Kart 7, Double Dash.
06:32Just prioritize, man.
06:35No one wants Tour back.
06:45Revamped Progression
06:53If you wanted to unlock every single kart part featured in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, you
06:58would have to collect a grand total of 3,100 coins from your races.
07:05Sounds easy, until you realize that the game only counts the total you have at the end
07:10of each race, which caps out at 10 coins per race.
07:23To some, this grind isn't a big deal, especially since the game is just really fun.
07:28For us though, when we were trying to unlock everything, it was grueling.
07:33For the next Mario Kart, we are just praying that Nintendo comes up with a far better way
07:38for us to earn kart parts and characters.
07:41Tie them to beating Grand Prix's like you used to.
07:44Tie them to Grand Prix ranks.
07:46Tie them to flipping time trials if you want, just like you guys did with Mario Kart Wii.
07:51But if you are really adamant about the coin counter, the least you can do is raise the
07:57cap, specifically for the cumulative total.
08:01Let the coins count even if we hit the cap, that's all we're asking.
08:05You're making a gameplay mechanic serve double time as a currency, it just doesn't make
08:10sense, please.
08:18Give us a career.
08:26One concept we're surprised Nintendo hasn't tried with Mario Kart is a proper campaign
08:31or adventure mode.
08:32This is an idea that was explored by other kart racers like Diddy Kong Racing in 1997
08:37and Crash Team Racing in 1999.
08:48The closest we ever got to something like this was a mission mode in Mario Kart DS.
08:53To this day, that mission mode is a big reason why some folks still go back and play Mario
08:58Kart DS.
08:59The thing is that Mario Kart 9, or whatever the next game is going to be called, shouldn't
09:04just do another mission mode.
09:06It needs the same treatment as the Mario sports games get, where there is a full-fledged story,
09:12places to go to between races, characters to talk to, things to collect, challenges
09:17to overcome aside from the normal gameplay.
09:20Make it an adventure.
09:22Give us the Grand Prix tradition, of course, but let's do something truly magical with
09:27a full-blown campaign.
09:37Expanded Battles
09:46One of the most disappointing aspects of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was just how neglected battle
09:51mode was.
09:52While Balloon Battle, Renegade Roundup, and Bob-omb Blast were delightful breaks from
09:57normal racing, this side of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe never saw any ounce of post-launch
10:02support.
10:03No new maps, no new modes, nothing.
10:13Maybe some data on Nintendo's end showed them that not as many players really cared
10:18about battle mode?
10:19Who knows, but we would love to see at least a couple of updates if the next game keeps
10:24battle mode around, which it should regardless of what the data insinuates.
10:37New Race Modes
10:46Speaking of missions and battles, there is something to be said about the core of Mario
10:50Kart.
10:51So many unlockables are tied to Grand Prix and Grand Prix only that a player really has
10:56no reason to do all the extra stuff like time trials, battle mode, or anything.
11:01If the next Mario Kart is going to keep Grand Prix as the most important mode in the entire
11:05game, we'd need not just different speeds, but different kinds of races to keep things
11:11fresh.
11:18Why not let us race on courses backwards?
11:21That's an idea that was explored on some of the booster courses.
11:24Or how about a mode of no item boxes?
11:27Or a mode where you must drive through gates?
11:29Or a mode where if you get hit by course obstacles, you lose a life, and if you get hit too many
11:34times, you're done?
11:36Let's get nutty with the races like we did with Deluxe's custom race options.
11:40I mean, why not make Blue Shell only a main mode of the game?
11:51And lastly, the never-ending guest list.
11:59In 2014, Mario Kart 8 director Kosuke Yabuki was asked by Nintendo Life about the possibility
12:06of a Smash Bros.-esque roster for a new Mario Kart, to which Yabuki replied with, quote,
12:12ellipses, I'm not ruling out the possibility of such an approach, end quote.
12:17Sure enough, Mario Kart 8 and its Switch port would bring in Link from The Legend of Zelda,
12:22the Inklings from Splatoon, and Isabelle and the Villager from Animal Crossing.
12:33Mario Kart 8 Deluxe even received amiibo support, where Miis could don racing outfits based
12:39on other Nintendo characters.
12:41We would absolutely love for this concept to be revisited for the next game, so long
12:45as we don't stray too far away from the Mario in Mario Kart.
12:57But enough about our list, what would you like to see improved upon or added into the
13:02next Mario Kart game?
