00:00What has you excited for this game?
00:02Let us know there because one of the things that might have you excited for this game
00:06is something that I'm not super familiar with, but I'm excited to get that handle on.
00:09I'm breaking it back out. I'm breaking it out.
00:11It is the OG's dramatic reading?
00:14We haven't done it since last season. This is the game. This is the time.
00:22This road is not just a road well traveled.
00:26Oh.
00:27It is tattered and battered with frustration.
00:30Strewn with heavy memories and sinkholes.
00:34Five times the Texans have been here.
00:37Five times they've dragged themselves home.
00:41Pulling the shackles of that dastardly word.
00:43Shackles.
00:44Potential.
00:46And fall short has left them with deep scars and bitter burdens.
00:51Year after year, it was back to their drawing boards and their houses of cards.
00:58The legendary hometown son Gary Kubiak tried and failed twice.
01:04The volatile and polarizing Bill O'Brien tried and failed twice.
01:10D'Amico has tried and failed.
01:13They stood face to face with validated royalty.
01:17Patriots, Ravens, Chiefs in this divisional playoff round.
01:21Five times they began every chapter with their chins high and eyes focused.
01:26But we know how those stories ended.
01:29Every time they tried to convince themselves more than us that they belonged.
01:34But they did not.
01:36They saw T.J. Yates overwhelmed.
01:38They saw Tom Brady dangle hope in front of them like a cat toy,
01:43only to pull it away and leave the Texans swatting at more false hope.
01:49They saw Brock Osweiler tell three interception stories
01:54on the way to another melancholy ending.
01:56We laugh to keep from crying.
01:57They saw 24 to 0 crumble.
02:00Lamar Jackson rumbled.
02:02And time and again, H-Town humbled.
02:05H-Town humbled.
02:08So they are here.
02:09Kansas City, here they come.
02:12Is this the time?
02:14The place?
02:15The tipping of the crown?
02:18Yes.
02:19Yes, it is.
02:20And why?
02:21And why?
02:23This is not T.J. Yates.
02:26This is not him.
02:27This is not Brian Hoyer, Brock.
02:30Inconceivable fake punts.
02:32Overmatched defenses.
02:34False profits.
02:35Fraudulent quarterbacks.
02:36And misconceived plans.
02:38This is real.
02:40The favored son D'Amico is bringing the swarm.
02:43C.J. Stroud is bringing his magic.
02:45Nico and Mixon are bringing more than empty promises and blank stares,
02:49but steely-eyed confidence like this city has never seen before.
02:54This is a team that already has lived through frustrations
02:56and stumbled through sinkholes.
02:58Yet they rose, brushed away the dirt and grime,
03:01and stepped forward, galvanized and irrepressible.
03:06Yes, this is the time.
03:08Yes, this is the place.
03:10This is the day.
03:13Okay.
03:14This is the time.
03:16This is the place.
03:17This is the day.
03:18Yeah.
03:19All right, Texans.
03:20Let's go.
03:21I was afraid that you were like,
03:22there was a few times where I was like,
03:23are you setting this up for the okie doke?
03:26Where you're going to, you're going to like knock folks down.
03:28But no, man, like I'm excited for this.
03:31Excited for this game to happen.
03:32Excited for the opportunities.
03:33And let me know.
03:34Again, let us know on the text line.
03:35713-572-4610.
03:37What are you and Deets excited for in this game?
03:40Because I think first and foremost,
03:41I didn't realize how excited and how giddy I was about this.
03:45But yesterday during lunchtime confessions,
03:48Sean sat in with us and he, you know,
03:51he just reiterated what he told us then,
03:53which is that he actually is in a place with the two football teams
03:58that he loves the most playing this weekend
04:00or in the next three days.
04:01He would much rather the Texans get this victory
04:04than Notre Dame win the championship.
04:07And as we're thinking through like,
04:09okay, what are the implications of this?
04:11It's like the opportunity to be the one
04:15that stands in the way of like the landslide
04:18that appears to be the Chiefs dynasty question mark.
04:23You know what I mean?
04:24Oh, it's a dynasty.
04:24Okay.
04:26Like to be the, to be the thing
04:28that ultimately stops that forward progress.
04:32And the conversation all off season
04:35for a decent amount of the year is,
04:37can that team have a three-peat?
04:39And for the Houston Texans, a team who had not,
04:42who has not to this point been able to get a win in this round
04:46to get that win in this particular circumstance
04:49with these odds, that like,
04:51just the notion of that excites me.
04:53Here's where I am in my excitement level
04:55because you've heard me say a million times,
04:58I like playing the best
05:00and testing yourself or beating them.
05:02And you just alluded to it.
05:04This is the best.
05:05This is the standard.
05:06This is the NFL's best team.
05:08And it's not close when you look at the body of work.
05:10You can talk about who's hot, who you're picking,
05:13you know, who, you know, Baltimore might do this.
05:15And you know, whomever might do that.
05:18You can do Buffalo, whatever.
05:19You can talk about all that.
05:20Kansas City's the standard.
05:22So you can, and the Texans know that more than anything.
05:24There's not going to be a problem with focus.
05:25There's not going to be a problem with anything
05:27in terms of getting ready.
05:29I think, I think that's what,
05:30I think it's kind of in a weird way, an advantage.
05:34I think it's kind of an advantage to know
05:36this is where they have to go through
05:38and there is no doubt about it.
05:39And that's what kind of inspired that speech,
05:41which by the way,
05:43never in a million years would I use AI to thing.
05:46I've been writing since I was in fifth grade.
05:49Somebody said, oh, that sounds like AI.
05:51That was yours truly.
05:52And I do it.
05:52I did it last year without AI.
05:54I did it today without AI.
05:55But no, I think someone said that I undersold what you read.
05:58They said they're ready to run through a wall.
06:00There's a few people that are like real excited on the YouTube.
06:02I got an old captain, my captain.
06:05I'll hold that.
06:06I did not.
06:07Although to be fair in listening,
06:08I was doing a lot of ruminating on like the previous falls.
06:12I was kind of surprised that the word Sisyphean did not come up in that
06:16because yeah, just the continuous rolling of the boulder up the hill.
06:20Only to reach the divisional round of altitude.
06:23I should have used it.
06:24Maybe AI would have used it.
06:27But yes, it got me to a place where I kept thinking about
06:30all of the times where you weren't able to get to this place.
06:33And again, clearly one of the most exciting parts is like the what if of
06:38if you do win, what would that mean?
06:39What would the jubilation be on the other side of it?
06:43But like within the game itself,
06:45what are the points or what are the things that have
06:48give you some level of excitement?
06:49Within the game itself.
06:51I mean, you heard it right there when I was talking about,
06:53you know, D'Amico is not Bill O'Brien.
06:55No, you know, Deshaun.
06:57I mean, CJ Stroud is not Deshaun Watson,
06:59which Deshaun Watson was an electrifying player.
07:01I'm not trying to take that away from him at the time when he was here.
07:04Obviously, a mere shell of himself now,
07:07but it just seems more sincere and it seems a little bit more together.
07:11I've never had the combination.
07:12This is what really I think Texans fans with hope in this game
07:15should hang their hat on this team.
07:18Never, ever, ever in its entire existence
07:21has had the combination of head coach, quarterback, and defense.
07:25Ever.
07:26Right.
07:28Say what you will about Matt Chauvin.
07:29I respected him and liked him,
07:30but that wasn't CJ Stroud.
07:32No, not by any means.
07:33I mean, there's very much.
07:35Right.
07:35Let's run this football and get things to work off of that.
07:38Right.
07:39Bill O'Brien years.
07:41You had Deshaun Watson.
07:42He could do some amazing things at the time.
07:44Bill O'Brien wasn't D'Amico Ryan's.
07:46He didn't have that confidence.
07:47Players doubted him in that locker room or butted heads or whatever,
07:51or didn't fall in line.
07:52You go back to the 2011 defense.
07:55Incredible defense.
07:56Very good defense.
07:57It wasn't this defense.
07:59And even if you say it was,
08:00you didn't have the combination of defense, quarterback, and head coach.
08:03And I think that's where you have to have some confidence with this squad.
08:07You know, and spoiler alert,
08:08we'll be doing it in the last segment of the one o'clock hour.
08:12You know, I reached the point watching this defense last week
08:16and watching the light bulb go off with CJ Stroud.
08:21I'm not going to pick against them.
08:23It's probably, maybe it's foolhardy,
08:25but I'm not going to pick against this team in this kind of a role
08:28with some of the things that they've been able to do
08:30with the combination of head coach, quarterback, and defense.
08:32Yeah.
08:33And the pillars, the pillars are clearly there.
08:36The question for me that it keeps popping up.
08:38And I, again, I'm trying to,
08:39we need to be in a place of excitement here
08:41at the very least at the start of this show.
08:43So I'm already violating.
08:44I recognize this.
08:46I'll take whatever criticism that comes in this.
08:48It's like, are the pillars enough?
08:49Are the pillars enough to hold up what feels like,
08:52hey man, there's things that are chipping away at this Texas team.
08:57But like, how strongly do those pillars stand?
08:59How much support do they give?
09:01Because, I mean, D'Amico Ryan's has been incredible.
09:03And we've seen the ways, in fact, we've discussed
09:06ways that he in these moments.
09:08And of course, like last year might not be the greatest indication of that
09:11because it's the very first foray into these spaces.
09:15And so what does another year and another 17 games of football
09:21and experience and opportunity lend and add to that?
09:25What multiplier does that add?
09:26CJ Stroud is finding a way to be closer to the version of himself
09:32that we expect to compare in the year.
09:34How much of that shows up?
09:36Does that continue to trend upward?
09:38And then of course the defense just on the field
09:40is the part that I think is the most exciting for me.
09:44I doubted them last week, right?
09:46I could say it pretty plainly.
09:48I did too.
09:48Not saying that I did not believe that there was a certain base level,
09:51but what was the high watermark?
09:53I doubted that they would be able to get to that.
09:55And there they were taking a team that had not turned the football over
09:59hardly at all.
10:01And a quarterback in the same way that had not turned the football over.
10:04And they got four of them, right?
10:06Not just one, not two, not three.
10:08Shout out to the Heatles or whatever.
10:10Four of them things, right?
10:12In a big fashion.
10:13And so the challenge is very fast in front of them.
10:17We know what that is and we'll detail it even further during our show.
10:21But knowing that, hey, I've already been in a place
10:24where they have exceeded my expectations at times.
10:28I'm looking forward to having that happen again
10:32because it feels like in this instance,
10:34it's not just, it wouldn't just be nice.
10:36It almost feels necessary.
10:37And ask yourself this, because those were some great squads.
10:40I'm not trying to take away from especially the 2011-12,
10:43you know, Texans and all that.
10:44But those were squads.
10:46You could easily argue there was a little bit,
10:48a shred of doubt or maybe a lacking of a bit of confidence
10:54going into these places.
10:56That was Tom Brady over there, man.
10:57In his prime, you know, when they faced him.
11:00That was Bill O'Brien showing us that he was a little bit,
11:04you know, not ready for the moment saying,
11:06I didn't have a play on fourth and one.
11:08That's doubt.
11:09That's skepticism.
11:10Do you think this squad has any doubt or skepticism?
11:13They might be beaten.
11:14I mean, but do you think this squad,
11:16do you think D'Amico Ryan's thinks,
11:17oh boy, you know, I don't know about this or that.
11:20Within the confines of that room, that team.
11:22That building.
11:23No, I think they operate with a supreme level of confidence,
11:26sometimes almost bordering at times on,
11:30what was the word though?
11:31I don't know if naivety is the right word to use.
11:33I feel like that would be a little too condescending.
11:35But, you know, like just in a place where it's like,
11:37it had, they even earned or like the,
11:40there was a level of confidence that they should have in some instances.
11:44And it's, it's served them fairly well this year.
11:46Right.
11:47And I feel like just in sports in general,
11:50there's a concept of like a rational confidence
11:53that I feel like is necessary in order to do these things.
11:56Especially like the position in sports,
11:58particularly that I always think about a rational confidence.
12:00It is confidence is it's cornerback.
12:02Like cornerback is a position.
12:03Do you think Derek Stingley is going,
12:04oh wow, that's Patrick Mahomes over there?
12:06Absolutely.
12:06Hell no.
12:06Absolutely not.
12:07Hell no.
12:08No, no, no.
12:08I mean, there's, there is a quiet, still confidence in that man.
12:11And I mean, honestly, in a lot of guys on this team,
12:13sometimes a little less quiet with various people,
12:15just depending on their particular,
12:18you know, like outgoing natures or whatever.
12:21But no, man, like I think about the cornerback position where you,
12:24you know, it is, it is a situation where you are sales.
12:27Yes.
12:27The league has geared all these rules towards offense.
12:30You are going backwards.
12:31Why the other players going forwards,
12:33they have an understanding of what the play is and what the future holds at least in,
12:36in the plan.
12:37Like I am running the post.
12:38I know what's happening as a defender.
12:39You're like, I am following this dude and trying to cover them.
12:43And yet you have to have just an irrational confidence going into that saying,
12:46no, I'm the better person in the situation.
12:48I'm telling you stop.
12:48And it feels like the Texans operate in that same way.
12:50They do.
12:50And you can go down the line and go back,
12:52go back, you know, at these divisional games in the past.
12:55You think Brock Osweiler was like, yeah, man, you know, I'm a killer.
12:59Hell no.
12:59You think Brian Hoyer?
13:00No.
13:01You think, you know, CJ Stroud?
13:03Yes.
13:03You know, so the confidence level, this is not the same Texans.
13:08They may get beat.
13:09That is the chiefs.
13:10That's a great team.
13:11They're going for three Superbowls in a row, but it's not going to be for want of, for lack of,
13:15of, of, of the confidence that they can get it done.
13:17And I think that's the biggest difference.
13:19And I go back to D'Amico starts there.
13:21CJ starts there.
13:22And this defense, it starts there.
13:24I mean, I, I think this is a different field.
13:28This is a different look for this Texan squad.
13:30Yeah.
13:31And now it's just, what remains to be seen is, can you get it done?
13:34Right.
13:34Because there's been teams that have, that have come up against great teams and particularly this
13:39great team or at least the, you know, this era of this great team and that they've had, you know,
13:45good chances.
13:45Like that's part of what has built the myth and the mythos of this team is beating the likes of
13:50Josh Allen's, Josh Allen's bills and Joe Burrow's bangles and such like to be able to stand up.
13:57Like you've got to put your best foot forward.
13:59I do.
14:00I do have a little bit of confidence as well, or at least excitement to see if this team is
14:05just going to do the thing where they, when the time comes, right.
14:09Like we are going to put our best foot forward.
14:11Do you know what I mean?
14:11Yeah.
14:12Like that, that is something that this year has, has, you know, I've had questions about it.
14:17It's like, are, are they going to put their best foot forward?
14:20It's one of the reasons why, especially early on the season, I was not quick to jump in because
14:24I was like, Hey, it still feels like they're not putting their best football on, on the,
14:27on the paper or on the field.
14:29Like, this is a team that it feels like when the time comes and when the moment arises,
14:34can you put the best, uh, the, your best foot forward.
14:36And, and, and, and at this time, there's no reason to believe because we can question what
14:41one drive meant in the Tennessee game.
14:44And I did, and I did question it.
14:45You sure did.
14:46Yes.
14:47This is different.
14:48This was a game that the chargers were favored.
14:50They made the play, uh, CJ Stroud to get everything started.
14:53The defense came up, as you mentioned with four, four picks.
14:56This is different.
14:57This is a squad that is rolling into Kansas city with, uh, just a different feeling of
15:02different confidence and most importantly, different character actors, different characters,
15:07you know, in the roles.
15:08So yeah, excited for this one.
