WA Labor has promised to slash the cost of public transport fares if re-elected, though users will have to wait a year for the changes to take effect. Meanwhile, the Liberals have proposed a tougher rehabilitation regime for drug users who find themselves in trouble with the law.

00:00The flat fare for public transport would mean those using SmartRider Autoload would only
00:09have to pay $2.80 a trip, wherever you go in Perth.
00:14If re-elected, a WA Labor government will abolish the old nine zone system and permanently
00:19put in place a single suburban flat fare.
00:23The reduction would take effect next year, and it's not just Perth, it's being extended
00:27to trans-regional services which operate on a two zone system.
00:31It will again encourage more people on our public transport, but importantly it's a cost
00:35of living initiative. It gives people choices.
00:38The Liberals were focused on new ways to tackle drug addiction. Court ordered rehabilitation
00:43for some of those who resort to criminal activity. Murray Kinane's son died when he was 22,
00:49after years of addiction.
00:50And I think these sort of steps will go a long way in helping the sufferers, helping
00:57the family, and supporting the community, because there are so many issues that come
01:02out of addiction, dual diagnosis, mental health.
01:07The current proposal is for five high needs beds and 13 residential beds, under judicial
01:12supervision, but it's still a work in progress.
01:15We will be working with the Mental Health Commission and key stakeholders on how the
01:20model will work. It will involve detox as well as the compulsory rehabilitation.
01:28Ms Metham says the Liberal policy would build on legislation initiated under the Barnett
01:33Government.
