00:00An endangered Borneo pygmy elephant was discovered brutally killed along the Kalabakan Road in
00:07Sabah's east coast Tawau district.
00:10A video of the elephant, with its head decapitated, was shared on social media on Sunday after
00:16a motorist spotted the carcass along the Kalabakan-Sapulut Road, approximately 25 kilometres from the
00:22Maliau Basin.
00:24The Sabah Wildlife Department has been alerted but no official statement has been issued.
00:30Efforts to contact the department's newly appointed director, Sofyan Abu Bakar, were
00:36unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
00:38According to department sources, an investigation is underway and a post-mortem is being conducted.
00:45The department has also lodged a police report and urged members of the public to provide
00:51any information by contacting its Tawau office.
00:55Conservationists, speaking anonymously, speculated that poachers may have shot the elephant before
01:01decapitating it.
01:03The Borneo pygmy elephant is critically endangered, with an estimated population of only 1,500
01:09to 2,000 remaining in Sabah's wild.
