00:00Okay, so this is the big breaking news that's coming in even in the court when in fact this entire hearing was taking place and the sentencing was being read out.
00:10The parents of Abhaya to the judge made it very, very clear that they don't want any compensation, they simply want justice.
00:17Suryagni Roy is joining us with more details on this.
00:20Suryagni, just throw more light for us on exactly what the court said while going ahead and sentencing Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment.
00:28Well, I'll tell you what the court has said right now.
00:33Firstly, it's important to say that the parents have openly stated that they do not want any kind of compensation in this particular case.
00:41Now, the judge says that he thinks that money can never compensate any debt but it is the liability of the state to protect the daughter as she was on duty.
00:55This is a statutory provision and if they want to take it, they can use it.
01:02The court has also mentioned that if they want, they can also go to a higher court if they are not satisfied with this order that has been passed right now.
01:15Once again, it's very important to announce that...
01:18But does it look like that's going to happen? Let me bring in Indrajeet also on this broadcast.
01:22Indrajeet, does it look like Abhaya's family could now move to a higher court also?
01:28Are they happy with the verdict that's come in or do they believe it should have been death penalty?
01:32Well, we'll have to wait for some more time, Akshita, for the family to come out and be attacked
01:38because we've been hearing them ever since the verdict was announced two days back, 48 hours
01:43and they were satisfied because they spoke to the judge last time when the verdict was announced 48 hours back
01:50and they have thanked the judge.
01:52However, the parents have been saying that this should be considered as the rarest of the rare case
01:57and highest punishment should be given.
01:59Now that the judge has decided in favor of life imprisonment till death,
02:03we'll have to hear from the family as to what they feel right now
02:08and do they think that there is a cause for them to move to a higher court which might happen
02:12because the family also have been saying that this is just the first step towards delivery of justice
02:18that Sanjay Roy may have been convicted but the family still does not believe
02:22that it was one person who has done this entire crime, there are others involved
02:27is what the family believes and therefore they might move to the higher court.
02:31But we'll have to wait, we'll have to wait for the family to come out
02:34and then express themselves after this quantum of sentence have been given.
02:38You know, you're seeing the sentencing of Abhaya's rapist there who's now in fact been sentenced to life
02:46but you pointed out Indra that the family believes that there are more people who are involved in this crime
02:51and that was something that was also being looked into by the CBI.
02:54Has that investigation ended? Is that still ongoing? Is that independent to this hearing?
03:01Well, look, you know, as far as the investigation in the rape and murder case is concerned
03:06that has been concluded by the central agency and the central agency has filed a chart sheet
03:11naming Sanjay Roy as the prime accused who has now been convicted.
03:15So there was scientific evidence, both forensic as well as other evidence
03:19that were laid before the court and the trial process began in November
03:23and it was fast-tracked and now within less than 60 days now
03:29the verdict has been given and the sentence has been pronounced.
03:32Now as far as the corruption case is concerned, that is still pending.
03:37The CBI is still, you know, probing the corruption angle
03:41in which the former principal of Arjikar Hospital has been named
03:46and he is under probe right now even though he has got bailed in one case, in the rape and murder case.
03:53So as far as the rape and murder investigation is concerned, the CBI has concluded the investigation
03:59and in their investigation, in their finding, they've only found that Sanjay Roy
04:03Sanjay Roy, this is one person who is to be blamed.
04:07He is the person, he is the sole perpetrator of this entire heinous crime
04:11that shook the conscience of the entire country
04:13and of course West Bengal and Kolkata
04:15and he today stands guilty, pronounced guilty by the court
04:19and he has been given life sentence till death.
04:22The judge of course coming to the conclusion after giving patient hearing to all the sides today.
04:28You know, last time 48 hours back when the verdict was announced
04:32the judge did not hear Sanjay Roy that day. Sanjay wanted to speak.
04:37Today he was given the opportunity to speak.
04:41He once again said that he is not guilty but that come in as a surprise.
04:45However, you know, the parents also spoke.
04:48So today the judge after hearing all sides, the CBI demanded, you know, death sentence.
04:54That's on record.
04:55They are the central agency who took over the probe from the Kolkata police.
04:59Remember, the family had alleged that they do not have any faith
05:03in the investigation being carried out by the Kolkata police.
05:06The Kolkata police was the force which actually arrested Sanjay Roy
05:10and even the Kolkata police's investigation initially had indicated
05:14that it could be the handiwork of only Sanjay Roy
05:17because there was nobody else, you know, to corroborate evidence.
05:22There wasn't any evidence to corroborate that there were other people
05:25who could be present as well in the particular crime.
05:28Now the CBI has corroborated the same.
05:31It went to trial and the judge has now pronounced his decision.
05:35So in a sense, this is a closure of one chapter.
06:29Total 70 lakhs will have to be given to his family as per the investigation.
06:35The victim's family.
06:40We had demanded capital punishment from the CBI and from the family.
06:45However, the court said that this is not a rearrest and rearrest matter.
06:50So we are not hearing the death sentence.
06:53We are going to give him a death sentence on 66 and 64 and 103.
06:58And we are going to give him a death sentence on 161.
07:02The court gave his statement.
07:05Advocate Anish Surahman.
07:07I am an advocate.
07:11I am an advocate.
07:13Okay, we are
