The Texans played a decent game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. But they had to overcome both the defending Super Bowl champions and the officiating. Sean Pendergast and Clint Stoerner discuss it in the postgame show.

00:00We have, we've been here before. This is the sixth time we've been here. The Texans have
00:04been to the divisional rounds six times in the history of the franchise, including the
00:07last two seasons. And each of those six times we are left wondering what needs to happen
00:13in order to get to an AFC title game. And you look at tonight's game or today's game,
00:19which bled into tonight. And if you had told me before this game that the Texans would
00:23out gain the chiefs by 124 yards, that they would gain 150 yards on the ground in this
00:29game, that Joe Mixon would go for nearly a hundred yards, went for 88 yards on 18 carries,
00:35that the Texans would out possess the chiefs by nearly seven minutes of clock time, 10
00:40of 17 on third down. These are all key indicators. Why would they want it won this game, but
00:46unfortunately a combination of the chiefs coming up big in situations where if you just
00:50give them a little bit of an inch, they take a mile.
00:53And I will say this too, a combination of that and yes, all of you fretting and chewing
00:58your nails about the referees throughout the week where I had said, Hey man, live your
01:02life a little bit better. Get excited for the game. Don't worry about the referees until
01:05you have to. Today was a victory for you. Two huge, huge penalties called on roughing
01:12Patrick Mahomes that wound up, especially the one early in the game wound up being big.
01:16I know that's going to be a topic for a lot of you tonight. And I know what needs to happen
01:20in the post season or in the off season here for the Texans to finally get over the hump.
01:25All going to be big topics. A lot of turning points in this game as well. Can already write
01:29the list down of people I think are going to catch heat from you guys. I think there
01:32were some Texans that had really good games tonight too, but ultimately the final score
01:3523 to 14, the chiefs beat the Houston Texans and the off season has begun Clint Sterner.
01:42So this will be our last post game show of the year. So we've got to make this baby count
01:467, 1, 3, 5, 7, 2, 4, 6, 10. Your initial thoughts on the game today.
01:51Uh, look, I feel a lot better right now than I felt, uh, after the Baltimore game last
01:55year. So, so, uh, we're moving in the right direction. I can tell you that I immediately
01:59thought after this ball game, I was like, okay, how does this compare to last year?
02:03And obviously it takes me to the way you go out. And I feel, I feel better about the way
02:09this team lost in the playoffs this year than the way they lost last year. Last year left you
02:14wondering was the whole season of fluke. Are they really as good as, as you think is CJ
02:19as good as you think is Nico as good as you think is this offense really as good as, as you think
02:25now you look at it. And, and I think they went out there and put a product on the field that I
02:30think most Texans fans could be proud of given what they were up against with the Kansas city
02:34chiefs. Now you get to the game and what we watched, I am not typically a, um, lead with
02:42the referee lead with bad calls. Um, I am a okay with people venting, whether it be on social
02:48media or callers calling in here on that text line, you're over there looking at, I have no
02:52problem today with discussing, uh, piss poor calls you're talking about. I mean, unbelievably
02:58egregious roughing calls, uh, that involve Pat, my homes that just cannot happen. Both of them
03:04happen on scoring drives. There was a field goal that followed the one that the roughing, the Will
03:09Anderson's roughing the pastor in the, in the first drive, there was a, it was a touchdown drive in
03:14the second quarter. I believe it was, um, when, when the other roughing call happened. And so
03:21that don't, don't tell me that either keeping a drive alive the first time, cause it was an
03:25incomplete pass on third down or flipping the field by 20 yards. You go from your 35 to now
03:31you're in, in Houston territory on the 35 flipping the field, 20 yards there. Um, you can't tell me
03:37that's not just a huge, especially again, when you're playing Pat my homes and Andy Reed on the
03:42road and that weather that is just difficult to overcome. And, and, and those were two piss poor
03:48egregious calls to where, again, it's not going to be top of the conversations just with the
03:54callers here in Houston. That's going to be top of the conversation on TV shows, like tonight,
04:01tomorrow, and moving forward because something has to be done about it. Uh, you know, you just
04:07can't have a playoff game affected the way that this one was with those two penalties.
04:12I think that's a general issue around the league right now, how that's called, but it, it was,
04:16it was so accentuated today. One, cause it was my homes too, because of the timing of those calls.
04:21Like you said, the first one, man, if the Texans get off the field early in that game, you know,
04:27with a game still tied at three early in that game, and you get off the field on that third
04:31Nate, the I'm a firm believer that like, there are a lot of forks in the road and games where games
04:36can change drastically. And those forks can be eight minutes into the game, you know? And, and
04:40so, so I think the timing of those calls, but just the, they weren't even borderline like they like
04:46will Anderson's helmet. Didn't hit Patrick Mahomes helmet, Henry Toa Toa. He went helmet to helmet
04:53with his teammates on player. Like it was, it was, it was crazy. So, and I hate that as I'm
04:58watching these, I'm like my, my least favorite kind of radio is referee blaming rate, right?
05:03Because I led with that, but I can't help. No, no, no. I know you and I are on the same
05:07page with this thing, man. Like it, those were two massive calls in this game and I could live
05:12with it a little bit more if the Texans were deficient in several other areas of this game.
05:16But I thought the Texans actually played. I thought they like overall, I thought they played
05:22about a B or a B plus game today in Kansas city. I thought the defense played an a game considering
05:27the situations they were put into and those calls that we're talking about here. Yeah,
05:31absolutely. The fact that they didn't turn Kansas city or I shouldn't say a game and a
05:34game would have involved winning the turnover margin. Well, at least the B plus. I mean,
05:38look, you're, you're up against it. I mean, there's at the end of the day,
05:42I just think there's several conversations here because I've got, I've got a conversation that
05:47we got to have of, of how in the hell are we still dot, dot, dot, dot, dot. And I got a few
05:53things that we got to discuss. How are we still seeing these things in critical moments of a ball
05:58game at 19 to 20 weeks into the damn season. Like I got a problem with that, but we've got to lead
06:03with these penalties because the issue with the penalties, right. Is, is you, we can talk about
06:08the penalties and the effect they had on, on, on those specific drives. And then if you take it
06:14away from just looking at the box score, the team stats and look at how they happen, you also had
06:18Pat Mahomes running the sideline and flop trying to pull another one. Clearly he knew that they
06:22were looking out for him and he was trying to draw into the penalty, right. I mean, he LeBron
06:26flopped on the damn sideline. Right. And then you look at the second roughing call where he was
06:30running the football one, he's running the football, but okay. It's a quarterback. You got
06:34to protect him instead of Detroit and made the, I thought he made a great point. He could have just
06:38went and got the extra yards and got out of bounds, but instead he cuts back in he's bobbing
06:42and weaving. He's playing this little delay game and baiting guys and then dropping bottom, dropping
06:47out of him the last second expected not to get hit all in all. I think they were bull jive calls.
06:53I think it's, I think it's exactly like Pat, what Pat Mahomes did today is exactly what you're
06:58trying to get out of the game. Not the slide late, not the slide, the egregious hit what you're
07:03trying to get out of the game is exactly what Pat Mahomes did today. And he's clearly aware of what
07:07he's doing because he's flopping like LeBron on the sideline. I just, and here's the other thing.
07:11I don't know the rule. I, this is the first time I've ever heard Troy Hickman. And I guess it was
07:16Joe Buck talking about, you know, they could, the officials could overturn the call on the
07:21roughing call on the field. I don't know how you don't overturn both of those calls.
07:25One. Yeah, both. They, they were both when Troy Hickman is done with this
07:29whole scenario, these core Troy Hickman is so done with these quarterbacks,
07:34tippy-toeing around trying to draw and that's a quarterback that his career ended with a concussion.
07:38That's like, yeah, yeah. Troy Hickman has been concussed more times than the starting quarterbacks
07:42in the league combined probably right now. Yeah. Look, I, I just, I just don't, I mean,
07:47for me, man, it's, it's a, I have a hard time playing this card, but, but not today, man,
07:52that was, it's too difficult. It's too difficult to go on the road and play that football team
07:57and win in that environment. It's too difficult to do that. And look, you can't give up opening
08:02kickoffs at 60 yards. You can't, you can't give up sacks when the game, when it's a one score game,
08:07the way that the way that you gave up sacks, you can't do those things. Correct. But that's
08:13a Texan problem. Yeah. The ref things should not be a problem, right? The bad calls should not be
08:18a part of the game. So miss me with the, Oh, you attempted a 50 plus yard field goal and missed it
08:23and gave Pat Mahomes the ball. And, and you know, your field goal missed it. Your, your field kicker
08:27missed an extra point and you did this and you did that. Those are all Texans things, all good
08:31and fair. We can talk about that at any given time. That's part of the game is the players are
08:35responsible for it. This crap with these officials and given the fact that it could have been
08:39reviewed, it should, it shouldn't, it just shouldn't happen. Yep.
