TikTok fans anxiously await its return to US app stores
TikTok still could not be downloaded from the Apple and Google app stores in the United States on Wednesday, January 22, trapped in legal purgatory by the two tech giants. US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday, January 20, delaying the enforcement of a ban on the Chinese-owned popular short-video app by 75 days, the legality of which is unclear.
Four days after ByteDance's TikTok went dark and then was quickly revived in the United States, users who deleted the app were anxiously checking iPhone and Android devices to find it still unavailable to be downloaded again.
The back-and-forth has brought out mixed feelings from users, including some who planned to abandon TikTok after seeing Trump so heavily involved in the negotiations that could result in TikTok eventually being sold to one of his allies in the tech industry.

00:00Sorry, TikTok isn't available right now.
00:09She's tried a few times today already, so.
00:14It looks like-
00:15Oh.
00:16Is it frozen?
00:17I don't know.
00:18Welcome back.
00:19Thank you for your patience and support.
00:22As a result of President Trump's efforts, TikTok is back in the US.
00:25You can continue to create, share, and discover all things you love on TikTok.
00:30For real?
00:31Does it look different?
00:32She's back!
00:33So this is the first thing I see.
00:35I'm thrilled.
00:36Like, I was- I cried last night actually while we were out when I realized it wasn't working.
00:44So this is, this is like thrilling.
00:46I'm so happy.
00:48I mean, I was scared.
00:50I really was scared it was going to go.
00:51I kind of didn't believe people when they were saying it was going to be gone.
00:54So last night not being able to open the app was triggering.
00:58And upsetting.
00:59And really scary.
01:00And I don't want to feel that way again.
01:03So, I'm really happy that it's back.
01:06It says, thank you for your patience and support.
01:09As a result of President Trump's efforts, TikTok is back in the US.
01:13We continue to create, share, and discover all the things you love on TikTok.
01:19Feels like you're kissing the ring.
01:21If you wanted to block TikTok, why did you change your mind?
01:25Because I got to use it.
01:27And remember, TikTok is largely about kids.
01:31Young kids.
01:32If China is going to get information about young kids, I don't know.
01:37To be honest, I think we have bigger problems than that.
01:40But you know, when you take a look at telephones that are made in China and all the other things
01:44that are made in China, military equipment made in China, TikTok, I think TikTok is not
01:52their biggest problem.
01:54But there's big value in TikTok if it gets approved.
01:57If it doesn't get approved, there's no value.
01:58So if we create that value, why aren't we entitled to like half?
02:03People know him.
02:04They know him in the Senate.
02:05They know he's good.
02:06He's doing a good job.
02:07I don't know.
02:08I can't tell you.
02:09I don't know what's going to happen with that.
02:10He's got some very strong ideas.
02:12Marco.
02:13Which one of you signed the program?
02:14Did you sign the TikTok program?
02:15Yeah.
02:16Yes, that was just signed.
02:17Marco Rubio said yes.
02:18Just signed.
02:20If we wanted to make a deal with TikTok and it was a good deal and China wouldn't approve
02:25it, then I think ultimately they'd approve it because we'd put tariffs on China.
02:31Maybe.
02:32I'm not saying I would, but you certainly could do that.
02:36And if we said, well, if you're not going to approve it, then that's a certain hostility
02:41and we'll put tariffs of 25, 30, 40, 50 percent, even 100 percent.
02:47And we did that.
02:48I think they'd approve it.
02:50Are you open to Elon buying TikTok?
02:51I would be if he wanted to buy it, yeah.
02:54And on your inauguration?
02:55I'd like Larry to buy it, too.
02:56I have the right to make a deal.
02:59So the deal I'm thinking about, Larry, let's negotiate in front of the media.
03:03The deal I think is this, and I've met with owners of TikTok, the big owners.
03:10It's worthless if it doesn't get a permit.
03:13It's not like, oh, you can take the U.S.
03:15The whole thing is worthless.
03:17Give me the permit.
03:18It's worth like a trillion dollars.
03:21So what I'm thinking about saying to somebody is buy it and give half to the United States
03:27of America.
03:28Half.
03:29And we'll give you the permit.
03:30And they'll have a great partner, the United States.
03:32And they'll have something that's actually more valuable because they have the ultimate
03:36partner.
03:37And the United States will make it very worthwhile for them in terms of the permits and everything
03:41else.
03:42So think of it.
03:43You have an asset that has no value or has a trillion dollar value.
03:48It all depends on whether or not the United States gives the permit.
03:51So what I'm saying is let the United States give the permit and the United States should
03:55get half.
03:56I think I'll get it right now.
03:57By the way, again, we won the young vote.
04:00I think I won it through TikTok.
04:02So I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok, OK?
04:07Thank you very much.
04:08Thank you, Mr. President.
