00:00Returning to PTV Sports, let's meet Lieven Katungay, a student-athlete from FEU who has won the UAAP several times.

00:11Good morning, Lieven.

00:15Lieven, first of all, we want to know, tell us about your journey as a football player because we believe you started when you were a kid.

00:24So, I started from private school, grade 2.

00:29My first shoes were rubber shoes.

00:34And then, after I finished grade 3, I moved to a public school to compete for the national team.

00:42Then, after that, my dream for the national team didn't come true because we lost the regional meet.

00:51And then, after elementary, I moved to a private school, which is now a high school.

00:59And then, during my high school, second year high school, I lost my scholarship because I grabbed an opportunity here in Manila, in Makati Football Club.

01:09And then, after that, there was a pandemic.

01:15I stayed private in that school because Makati Football Club paid for my school.

01:20And then, in 2022, the PFF Youth Tournament started.

01:27Then, I played for NCR.

01:31And we were the first runner-up.

01:34And then, after that, my teammate, Brian Villanueva, helped me to get into Far Eastern University.

01:43And that's where my FPU journey started.

01:47Riven, I noticed that, based on your story, most of your decisions are based on playing football,

01:55moving schools, and eventually, when you came to Manila, it was really focused on football.

02:02So, why did you pursue football as your career?

02:08Because, as of now, football is the only thing that helps me and my family.

02:14And if I don't pursue this, for sure, I'll go back to the province.

02:21And then, I'll have a hard time again.

02:23No, but what I mean is, what's there in the sport of football?

02:27Why did you fall in love with this sport when you were a kid?

02:32Maybe because of the physical contact.

02:35Because I really wanted physical contact.

02:37And then, I became an idol when I was a kid, Chife Caligdon.

02:43And then, that's why I really pursued football.

02:48Yes, yes.

02:49I heard about that before.

02:50Yes.

02:51You were the football player at the time.

02:53He mentioned earlier, I just want to highlight, that when Leo Ven started playing football,

02:59you were just wearing rubber shoes.

03:02So, how hard is it that you didn't use the proper shoes for football?

03:08First of all, it hurts my feet and it's slippery.

03:12And it's hard to kick when I'm wearing rubber shoes.

03:16It's good that you didn't ask your mom why you didn't buy proper shoes for football.

03:24Because at first, I just tried football to see if I would really like it.

03:30And then, after a month, they bought me spiked shoes.

03:36You know, your dad posted something on social media, definitely pertaining to people who doubted you.

03:45Tell us the story.

03:47It started in 2016, when I was selected for FC Barcelona camp in Malaysia.

03:54And then, a coach doubted me.

03:58He said, how did you get selected?

04:01You don't know how to control the ball.

04:03And then, when I came back from Malaysia, I trained with the team again.

04:09I proved to them that I can control the ball, even with a small ball.

04:13Did it help you to motivate people who doubted you?

04:19Because athletes have different approaches when it comes to receiving unjust criticism.

04:27It's not a structured criticism.

04:30That's okay.

04:31But if you're just a hater, it's different.

04:35So, that's my question.

04:37Did it motivate you?

04:39Or how do you handle negative comments about you?

04:44Actually, it motivated me.

04:47Because I know what they're saying is not true.

04:51Which is, I can prove it to them when I play in the field.

04:56For those who are watching, Liyuvin wants more haters.

05:01I'm just kidding.

05:03I know for others, they will be down.

05:05And for Liyuvin, it really served as a motivation for him to keep going.

05:10And to prove those haters wrong.

05:12That's right, partner.

05:13But there's also an article where you said that one of the reasons why you're pursuing football

05:22is to help your mom.

05:24So, what's the story behind that?

05:26Can you just elaborate?

05:29When I was young, my mom went to Singapore as an OFW.

05:35And then, I really wanted to take her home so that I can be with her.

05:40And then, I was able to take her home.

05:43And because of football, I was able to help them.

05:46They didn't have to pay for my tuitions and allowances.

05:49You know, that's what's good about student-athletes.

05:52Especially if you have the talent.

05:54They become scholars.

05:55Yes.

05:56And I like Liyuvin because he really thinks about how to help his family,

06:02especially his parents.

06:04That's why he pursued football.

06:07So, how did you get scouted by EFU?

06:12It was during the pandemic.

06:14A coach chatted with my mom.

06:16But I didn't commit yet because I was still in Makati Football Club.

06:20And then, in 2022, during the PFF U-19 National Championship,

06:25after we won the first runner-up,

06:27one of my teammates was able to join the F.E.U.,

06:30which is Brian DeLanueva.

06:32And then, he recommended me to the coach

06:34because the team lacked a midfielder.

06:39And then, that's when I moved here to Manila.

06:45When they said the team lacked a midfielder,

06:47were you really a midfielder?

06:49Or did you just learn the position to be able to join the team?

06:52I was a midfielder before.

06:54And then, during the PFF, I became a left-back.

06:58So, your position hasn't changed.

07:01Yes.

07:03But you already have three championships with F.E.U. Fast Forward.

07:08Do you have a formula for success?

07:11Because it's not easy to get three championships with your AP partner, right?

07:15Yes.

07:17Maybe it's just the timing with my teammates.

07:20Because our teamwork, our chemistry,

07:23we're all in the same boat.

07:27Of course, it's easier to communicate with them.

07:31And then, my teammates are really talented.

07:34And then, with their hard work,

07:36we really wanted to win the championship last season, in 1987.

07:42Because last season, in 1986, I lost to our men's team in the U.P.

07:46If I'm not mistaken, you were the champion in 1985.

07:50In high school.

07:51And then, in 1986, you defended.

07:55Actually, you got your crown back in 1987.

07:59Yes.

08:00But how is it playing in a champion team?

08:03Pressure.

08:05Especially after 1986.

08:09And then, in 1987, there was pressure because I wanted to get my crown back in Marietta.

08:16Oh no, it looks like you'll get your crown back in a different way.

08:20Anyway.

08:21And then, there was pressure, but at the same time, I was still enjoying it.

08:25During cleanings and games.

08:28I'm pretty sure that Liouvin has high expectations when it comes to playing football.

08:34And, of course, you don't have to ask.

08:38Your goal is to play in the highest level, like the national team, the pro leagues.

08:44But I have a question for Liouvin.

08:46What can you say about the performance of our national football team?

08:51I can't believe that they won against Thailand in the home game, in Rizal.

08:58Their performance was really good.

09:01They really have a heart.

09:03I'm sure you also aspire to be part of the national team, wearing our national tricolour.

09:09So, it's more hard work.

09:13Do you have a roadmap of how you can achieve that?

09:17Of course, right now, it's still a grind.

09:22But do you see a step-by-step of how you can achieve that goal?

09:28Right now, I'm still focusing on school.

09:32And then, by summer, I'll go to Thailand for semi-pro and pro trials in July 2025.

09:40And my goal this year is to be part of the SEA Games lineup.

09:47Is Roman Oliver still the coach for this upcoming season?

09:53I heard that he's in the PFF.

09:57And then, we're not sure if he'll continue in the FA.

10:01But what is one thing or advice or lesson that coach Roman gave you?

10:10He told me that my only talent is to do hard work.

10:18During 1987, I wasn't able to train much because of my class.

10:24I was based in Maraita.

10:27Because of that, my playing time was limited.

10:30And then, he told me that if I ever train or play,

10:34I should just show my best because he has confidence in me.

10:39Now, we want to know, when you win a championship,

10:43the next goal is to defend the title that you won, right?

10:47Yes.

10:48So, what is the mindset of your team so that, heading into the next season,

10:52the success will continue?

10:55It's still the same.

10:57We still plan to defend the title.

10:59We won't just give it to them.

11:02And then, we have trainings outside of the country.

11:08We have tournaments.

11:09We're preparing for the upcoming season, which is the season 88 of UEA.

11:15Part of it is, Liu Wen said that he's going to a tournament or camp in Thailand.

11:23As a team, we have three places to choose from.

11:29Australia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

11:31In Australia, it's a tournament.

11:33In Thailand, it's just a training camp.

11:35And in Vietnam, it's a tournament.

11:45For you, what's the best place to train?

11:49Maybe Australia.

11:56Your plan is to try out for the national team, right?
