Transcript
00:00Let's take our daily look around London, and today we're heading to one of the city's
00:04most iconic landmarks, Buckingham Palace.
00:07This majestic building has served as the official residence of the British monarch since 1837.
00:12It was built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham, and King George III purchased it in 1761 as
00:18a retreat for Queen Charlotte.
00:20Before its transformation into the palace we know today, the now famous balcony was
00:24used for something far less glamorous, drying laundry.
00:27It wasn't until 1851, during Queen Victoria's reign, that the royal family began appearing
00:32on the balcony for public celebrations.
00:34The palace boasts 775 rooms, including 52 royal and guest bedrooms and over 150 staff
00:41bedrooms.
00:42It has a private post office and its ballroom is longer than the height of Westminster Abbey's
00:46nave.
00:47That's it for now, but we'll have more on Buckingham Palace later in the programme.
