00:00What did you make of the online reaction to Alice's relationship with Nick?
00:04And would you ever want to revisit going back to a younger Nick?
00:08I love the Alice and Nick storyline.
00:11It's such an anchor point for me playing Alice.
00:17Just like, it was one of the first times we really saw her open up.
00:20She's such an angry, like...
00:23Nose ring?
00:24Yeah, I had a nose ring. It was crazy.
00:25No, she was really going through a hard time at the beginning
00:29and the first time we see her sing on his request at the beach
00:34in front of all these strangers,
00:36you really see her for the first time as a young girl
00:41and just vulnerable and it's so beautiful.
00:44And I feel like...
00:47I didn't know people were going to be so attached,
00:49but it was almost like, as time went on,
00:51people got more attached to their relationship.
00:54And the more they became star-crossed lovers,
00:56like, we saw them at the house party at Lingermoor
01:00and they were in the masquerade
01:03and they were seeing each other through the glass.
01:05It's like, the more they got pulled apart,
01:09the more people wanted them to come together.
01:12And so, for Nick to finally find out that Alice had time-travelled,
01:18obviously that was the most disruptive thing of all time
01:20to them being able to act normal in the present day.
01:23But I think that they're...
01:27I, of course, love that story and would go back there any time,
01:31but I think that Alice needs to be in a place of focusing on her future.
01:39And we see that in episode five with Noah.
01:42It's like, everyone else in her life knows about the pond.
01:45And so when she's having a hard time with some of her family,
01:51it's all informed by time travel,
01:52which is the most unusual set of circumstances.
01:56And so the scene with Noah where she can actually just tell him
02:00how she's really feeling and he gives her normal advice
02:03is the most refreshing thing for her as a teenager
02:07because all her other relationships have this other character of the pond.
02:12And that's the one where she can just...
02:16Untether.
02:16Yeah, just be a teenager.
02:18And I think it's something that she really needs.
02:20And so even if her kind of lying and sneaking around with the pond
02:25is ultimately putting a strain on their relationship,
02:28I think it's something that she needs to try out.
02:33And so I think we'll see how the Alice and Nick in present day awkwardness
02:40can work itself out.
02:42Carrie James, who plays Nick, is so much fun to work with.
02:49Yeah, it's definitely...
02:52It's funny to see them just sort of pretend that they don't know each other,
02:56but also be forced in a small town to constantly bump into each other.
03:00And I think it was handled beautifully.
03:02Because you can address it without making it even weirder.
03:07I think that's the fun part for me.
03:10I think one of the things that feels most holistic about the show,
03:14like kind of healing,
03:15is that thematically we're always investigating this question
03:18of is it better to try to change the past
03:23or change our relationship to the past,
03:25which allows us to exist in the present and the future.
03:27And I think we see all of the audience and all of the characters
03:31in their own ways grappling with that question.
03:33And obviously our audiences are grappling with that question as well.
03:36And we see, like, obviously there are things that the heart wants,
03:39the things that they're like, oh, this is good, I want that.
03:42But we're also watching the characters navigate that.
03:45And I think one of the most realistic things about the show
03:47is we see the characters not necessarily always get what they think they want.
03:53And the whole thing, there's such a greater,
03:57I don't know, Rubik's Cube type complexity to the story.
04:01Wait, what was your knot?
04:02Oh, like a Gordian knot.
04:05He kept saying that in some of the interviews.
04:07And I was like, dude, I have no idea what that means.
04:09But it sounds good.
04:10Yeah, hey, that's what I'm going for.
04:12And like the accordion knot, remember that?
04:15Yeah.
04:18So anyway, we love it.
